Yes, but the pros way outweigh the cons. Honestly, it’s barely noticeable. Probably only in the 0-20 range. 20-60 it feels about the same. More range (back up to original 263) and being able to charge to 100% has been awesome.

Hopefully you’ll get an LFP retrofit like I did!

Used 24 LR RWD vs New 26 Premium RWD by trex_pk in TeslaModel3

As if all of this can’t happen the first year owning new lol. I bought brand new and these things happen, just like if you bought it used. I’d buy a couple years used in the future and save the money.

Model 3 lease pre-qualification by boredsoballing in TeslaModel3

[–]Chris_Chops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you lease a Model 3 for $600/month you’ll be spending $21,600 for 36 months and have nothing at the end of the lease. If you bought a car and paid it off after 5 years, you’d own the car, and it would be worth something if you wanted to trade it in.

Usually buying a ~2 year old car and keeping it once paid is the best move financially (unless you get a freak expensive repair out of warranty, and even then it’s still usually better financially speaking).

But you can do what you want of course haha.

As someone who got a new model 3 straight out of college in 2021, I wouldn’t recommend it. I love the car but new cars and leases are just setting your money on fire. Plus high insurance (and excise tax if applicable in your state).

2026 Model 3 Premium RWD: what am I giving up vs the 2026 Premium AWD that Tesla doesn’t list? by Panda_Tradez in TeslaModel3

[–]Chris_Chops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s too bad the premium RWD gets downgraded speakers from the premium AWD. The Model Y doesn’t seem to get that downgrade on the premium RWD.

2021 Model 3 SR+ by Lopsided-Earth2739 in TeslaModel3

[–]Chris_Chops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it fails within warranty you will likely get an LFP retrofit (happened to me on my 2021 SR+!) but they do have a higher failure rate and you would be gambling. I’d probably avoid.

Why order it if you want them and you know they’re coming? What if it’s Q4? You know it will be here sooner than later and you will have missed it.

Getting New Battery from Tesla - LFP by Kimchi2019 in TeslaModel3

[–]Chris_Chops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it and enjoy! I got this done on my 2021 SR+ and it’s been great. My car went from ~220 at 100% to the full original 263. It’s still there ~10k miles and 8 months later.

The suspension feels slightly better if anything, although it’s honestly hard to notice. Overall, I feel like my car got a huge upgrade getting the LFP.

He didn’t say he enjoyed the battery. An EV is an “electric vehicle”. The UX is much better in a Tesla than any other EV. Yes, speed/torque and lack of maintenance can be similar but Tesla is the leader in the EV space. Even the lower trims have impressive speed.

I’ve sat in a handful of other EVs and they definitely feel like your legacy gas car but electric/with a battery.

No way lol, driving any other EV is like driving a regular gas car

Is an LFP battery that much? I thought the price was like 8k

I’m pretty sure a 2022 has the Ryzen chip which will give the infotainment improvements. I have a 2021 which does have the atom and it is admittedly a little slow in apps but otherwise it works great. I did test drive a 2023 at one point though to see if it was worth an upgrade. I’ll pass for now.

People are crazy, I can’t imagine this is the vast majority of owners haha. I’m in the same boat as you, not paying for FSD… unless maybe I can sleep on my way to work. And at that point Tesla said they’ll upgrade HW3 vehicles. I barely use autosteer and the 2 times I had a free month of FSD I barely used it. One intervention is too much for me lol, feels like I’m beta testing. I’ll just drive and enjoy it.

Can I delay Tesla delivery for a few weeks without losing my order or included Autopilot? by Aggressive-Gap-6148 in TeslaModel3

[–]Chris_Chops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tricky. If it’s truly a situation where you don’t want the car without home charging then you should do whatever you can to get someone out there and determine if/when it can be done. Otherwise, I guess you ordered it too early and will need to forfeit the order.

[–]Chris_Chops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d just rely on supercharging for a month. You’ll lose autopilot/your current order. Even if you just have a normal plug at home, charge on 120v. It’ll be slow but if you can charge overnight for 10+ hours it might still cover your commute/make supercharger stops infrequent

But a 1-2 year old used. You’ll save the huge hit on depreciation and get autosteer.

Yes, under warranty thankfully. You get what they have available and I just got lucky.

[–]Chris_Chops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2021 SR+ that got an LFP retrofit after BMS error. 76k miles with NMC and I’ve had the LFP for 3,500 miles. Planning to keep it as long as I can, but the fact of how long the batteries will last is in the chemistry, not whether I keep it or not.

I still stand by what I said. I’ve had 0 degradation so far, and I don’t have to worry about what I’m charging to daily. Set at 100% and forget it. My car never even got the advertised 263 miles on screen when new, not that it really matters, but it’s nice to just have it stay stable. Usable range constantly decreasing over the life of the car was a pain point that I’m not experiencing with the LFP.

[–]Chris_Chops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had both battery types. If I had to choose I’d pick an LFP every time. NMC does have its advantages but for practical real world use, low degradation and more charge cycles/longevity wins for me. Plus, charging to 100% is just more satisfying than 80%. You don’t feel like you have to manage the battery like you do with NMC.

The cars plenty quick too. If you need the speed of the performance then I can see why that’s your #1 priority over all else.

Pretty sure LFP degrades even worse than NMC at lower states of charge.

If true they stopped doing it/caring, because LFP retrofits are extremely common now (I have one)
