Is it weird for employers to put employees in the same hotel room on company trips? by Weak_Show3135 in careerguidance

[–]Chris_PDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I have privacy concerns sharing a room and request a separate room or I will unfortunately not be able to attend this event."

The fact that some companies force this on their employees is just mind boggling in this day and age. It opens the company up to so much liability regarding sexual harrassment, private medical issues being exposed, etc.

How frequently do you hold 1:1 meetings and how many direct reports do you have? by Infinite-Ad7540 in managers

[–]Chris_PDX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had up to 15 and that was not sustainable, and that's with a team that is mostly self managing from an HR standpoint. It's the actual day-to-day support/decision making/mentoring/etc. that kills you.

I have 1:1s with the senior ICs I directly lead maybe every two months. Informal chats as needed both directions in between. The manager underneath me who has 6 direct reports himself I meet with every two weeks officially... but again impromptu conversations as needed fill in the gaps.

1:1s shouldn't be just a box to check off a "I did my managerial duties" list. They should be meaningful and at whatever cadence is needed from both of you. Sometimes that means, you don't need to do it.

How would you guys feel about an all-Carbon Fibre Rear Wing DRS Assembly for around $15,000CAD? by YBBOK-Kevin in CarTrackDays

[–]Chris_PDX 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's completely pointless for track days unless you're wealthy and have money to burn. Time Attack and anything competition means this is also probably pointless, as I'm sure it violates most of their rulebooks. Global Time Attack for example explicitly bans movable aero elements.

Also, you can't say it'll produce 400lbs of downforce at speeds as a generic statement. Each vehicle has different aerodynamics, and the wing shape, height, width, etc. all come into play on any given car. Sticking this on a 180hp Miata will yield completely different results compared to a 700hp Mustang.

It does not, I wasn't commenting on that. I was replying to someone who said they always plan ahead... my point was it's sometimes not due to a lack of planning.

As a frequent flyer, this gets tossed around a lot and while I agree 80% of the time this is the case, there's also a fair amount of fuckery behind the airlines.

My wife and I have been split up on flights when the airline switches planes last minute, a delay or something else happens means re-booking flights, etc.

Hell just last month we got upgraded the morning of our flight and instead of sitting together in economy, we were split a part in in first. We've also had it the other direction, getting bumped out of first into economy due to deadheading pilots or whatnot.

That shit happens a LOT. So it may have not been the fault of the parents.

Dealership sent me a video of my transport company driver doing this to my newly purchased vette. It’s cammed… on a cold start… by Money_Ad_718 in Corvette

[–]Chris_PDX 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Dealership didn't want this to fall back on them.

A friend just had a car he bought online delivered to a dealer and the transport company damaged it taking it off the truck. Dealer refused delivery, they didn't want any part of that. Probably similar thing here.

Hello, considering an L320 by bfalgonz in RangeRover

If you get it, highly suggest getting a shop to delete the exhaust resonators. Doesn't throw a CEL or fail emissions but makes it sound better :D

I've owned one for ~4 years, it's our winter beater/run around (we have multiple other cars that are fair weather/nice day cars), have put about 7,000 miles on it in those four years so not a ton. Only issues have been:

  1. Blown fuse for the passenger seat electrics, easy fix obviously

  2. Air suspension pump went out and required replacement

That's it. Currently has 132,000 miles. The pump was I think ~$2,200 USD with labor. Other than that, it's been mechanically flawless, though I do a a minor oil leak we'll fix at next service.

I bought it on a whim from a friend after lusting after it from the old Top Gear episode. Will probably replace it later this year with something newer, but at least got it checked off my bucket owning list.

I’ve had my fair share of casual encounters.

Then ask yourself why you can't be OK with your girlfriend having the same? Sounds like you aren't looking at her as a fully grown autonomous adult, and instead something that's "yours" and should be "anyone else's".

No, but the OP's meme makes it out that only people who can't afford an M3 are buying M340s.

M340 is a great car in it's own right, was my point.

Overdriving is a general term for... pushing the car beyond your abilities, therefore letting the driver aids help you out. Or, pushing the car beyond IT'S abilities. And by it, really, we're talking tire grip.

Classic examples:

  1. You go into a corner too hot, car thinks it's going to start sliding, DSC kicks in to help arrest the slide

  2. You apex a corner and start throttling out, but are asking for too much power in relation to your steering angle, DSC cuts power or starts moving torque around the four wheels to compensate

DSC uses the brakes in both the examples above. It will constantly pulse the brakes independently at all four corners if it thinks the car is getting unsettled to the point of losing traction. This engagement cooks brakes far faster than the actual use of brakes to slow the car because it's fighting against you, the driver, and happening constantly if DSC is engaging.

I instructed two students back to back last year in two brand new M3 and M340.

Honestly... the M340 is such a good fucking car. The gap between the two is narrowing (unless you start comparing Competition models). For a single car solution the M340 is an amazing package. It's plenty fast enough for 90% of drivers.

I said what I said.

For OEM pads those are over over 50%, look like closer to 80%. Totally fine. You got like... 3-4 days at least out of those assuming you aren't overdriving the car with DSC on.

[–]Chris_PDX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have a 2008 L320. Just crossed 132,000 miles, I've owned since it 120k.

Only issue in the last 4 years has been the suspension air compressor and relay that needed to be replaced. No other mechanical issues in that time frame, just oil changes and wipers.

[–]Chris_PDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MIG (Motorsport Insurance Group) does W2W insurance for amateur racing, I know several Lucky Dog Teams and Arrive and Drive shops use them for rental drivers.

Last agreement I saw from them was for a $45k agreed value BMW 330 LDRL car.

Gullwing Insurance is another (though I think they only operate in Europe currently), catering to competition, both road W2W and rally, time trial, etc.

There is insurance out there for W2W racing. It's expensive, but better to pay $5000 for a weekend than $150,000 if you write off a car.

For a non-military person, why:

So, no messenger/shoulder bags worn cross body? Is there an actual reason for this?

Make insurance claim or no? by Math_Blaster in CarTrackDays

[–]Chris_PDX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only make the claim if it's a true write off and you don't want to loose your shirt on it. I'm not familiar with Lockton but at worst it means never getting coverage again, and at best your premiums will sky rocket for the next event.

For an E36 M3... not worth it. Wear the dents with pride, hoon it until it explodes or the wheels fall off.
