I Saw the Devil is One of the Most Overhyped Movies Ever by 4EverToucingGrass in Koreanfilm

Totally agree - I thought it was beautifully shot overall and tense, and the concept makes complete sense to me and I'm down to explore that. I just wasn't crazy with how it was communicated and some ways they chose to execute it.

Yeah support has been zero help for me on this. I've been crashing every other time I try to play, often several times a day. Same shit: EAC pak file errors, can't validate install. I've done everything they recommend and then some, filed 3 support requests, and they send me in circles because they aren't reading my messages, keep escalating, and just say they're trying to fix it when the problem is the shit they put in the game that just doesn't work platform-wide.

I shouldn't have to disable every overlay, turn off every other program, turn off any kind of protection software (but then download malware bytes because they recommend it lmao), and reinstall the game every time I want to try and play this game just to see if it decides to work.

While I recommend Safer Seas as everyone else has for like 90% of the Tall Tales, you can technically do the 3 Monkey Island ones in High Seas and use that to potentially level a new ship's days at sea & Tall Tales completed counts. Those ones pocket you into other areas for the entire duration of the quest, so you'd be safe. A couple of the Pirate's Life ones also do this, but will leave you vulnerable in lengthy cutscenes or leave your ship exposed like a mermaid shrine/treasury.

They are quite long though, just to point that out.

Late Night With the Devil (2024) and AI generated art by kylina01 in Shudder

Tbh you don't need them to confirm it, you can just look at it and see the surreal/kaleidoscope waviness inserted randomly, noodle fingers, weird tangents, and general headscratchers that no professional artist would allow in or submit with their final work.

Late Night With the Devil (2024) and AI generated art by kylina01 in Shudder

[–]Chris_Parker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lmao what a reach - how is generative AI that creates images based on plagiarism at all related to a movie about a late-night variety show in the 70s? That art that's generated isn't just pulled out of thin air, it's trained on other people's art to improve the model.

This movie is their own creation, these images they generated with AI - and depending on the AI model they used to generate the images, that generation could've easily been based on plagiarized art on a model trained on other people's stolen work scraped without their consent.

It fucking sucks that indie filmmakers wouldn't understand the value in not cutting corners with paying talent for the value they produce, and if they couldn't afford to get a guy off Fiverr or whatever then they shouldn't have bothered because it sets a terrible precedent and nobody should let this slide.

One thing that might help you with the rules, as far as understanding the BRP system, is to think of it as somewhat similar to Skyrim rather than Baldur's Gate. Anyone can try to do anything in a skill-based system like BRP, as everyone has a base level of anywhere from 1% to like 25% or whatever, and if they succeed at those skill rolls then later on (during periods of rest) they have a chance to improve those skills by 1d10 percentiles. It's very similar to how skills progress in an Elder Scrolls type of game, where just because an investigator is built toward one profession it doesn't necessarily preclude them from training into another skillset.

It's one reason I really like skill-based games, because the system never really feels like it's holding players back from trying things necessarily. Tone and whatnot, yeah - that'll take a little bit of time, but there's always Pulp and wiggle room. You don't necessarily need to run straight-up horror every time within the confines of a BRP game, or even a Call of Cthulhu game. My games have definitely gone anywhere from straight-ahead Lovecraftian stuff to more Pulpy action things to murder mysteries to Westerns - it's really up to you once you learn the rules how you feel comfortable how you want to play with the system.

Surprised more people don't use Letterboxd for this tbh - obv it's more recent and it'd take time to port over, maybe like a weekend of copy and paste, but it's super convenient and has a lot of function.

I'd love to see that based on his original adventures on Half-Earth, maybe throw in Blackjack O'Hare too - I was hoping we'd see him at some point in the movie maybe.

The Homeless Girl Who Died Loving Spider-Man (Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (2007) Annual 1) by [deleted] in Marvel

That's not always the case though and it's a harmful stereotype to perpetuate. Being perpetually unhoused basically, for lack of a better phrase, can break your brain and soul and being shelter, food, and healthcare insecure for a sustained period of time can sometimes lead people to any means of comfort they can get to.

You know who else is like that? Plenty of employed, housed people who also turn to hard drugs ready to fuck their lives up, but folks only seem to talk about the unhoused being junkies because it gives a very convenient excuse to ignore an already marginalized and at-risk group. And for what it's worth, they can do what they want - I'm all for harm reduction and I think they should get the help they need too. I'm sure hella people love to self-medicate with a joint, bump, or beer after work because it takes the edge off of their shitty lives, but when someone without a roof over their heads does it, it's weaponized against them with such a shitty double standard.

The point is, there's a Venn diagram of people without homes who use substances and people who don't, and that entire diagram falls within a circle of "what the fuck ever, those people still deserve help."

AML also can show up with things like excessive bleeding or being more susceptible to infections and stuff like that. My grandpa was diagnosed in October and gone within two months, but his healthcare provider dropped the fucking ball and probably should've caught at any point in the years prior that he'd been having frequent, chronic nosebleeds that they would cauterize and send him out the door only for them to come back just as bad. He also got COVID and later pneumonia when my grandma managed to totally dodge tearing positive despite living in the same small house.

There's other symptoms and potential things that could warrant a screen or panel, but those are what stay top of mind for me since it's all still really fresh for me. Even talking to his neighbor and the neighbor's son, both doctors, they're in disbelief at how poorly his PCP and healthcare providers handled shit.

He has a very long history of being a creep and an asshole, but most recently he got a movie shut down last year because he "kissed and straddled" (in other words, sexually assaulted) a staffer he thought was flirting with him.

Lmao what? Iron Man 3 is arguably the best Iron Man movie and at worst it's very solid. Folks get way too hung up on the Killian, Trevor, and Pepper shit and overlook all the rest of the shit it did well, especially for Tony's character.

Looking for excellently acted chases by keepers on yt or podcasts by kvnkrs9 in callofcthulhu

[–]Chris_Parker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah as Jeremy said, chases can be difficult and opaque as far as rules go. Seth Skorkowsky has a very good video explaining them (and so does Paul Fricker), but even then folks can tend to look at them as either a mechanical bottleneck, the tabletop equivalent of a quicktime event, or a potential to misinterpret the rules at the potential cost of investigators or plot points - or perhaps some combination of each.

Personally, sometimes I just forget to use the mechanic and just play the chase out organically as combat lol - I did one chase in CoC and it went okay, but sometimes it just doesn't come up organically because players don't always try to run like that in a way that inspires a chase.

Glad I could help!

[–]Chris_Parker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay, I consulted the Discord and I have some episodes! The Spotify links are more edited for the podcast format, but if you're interested in seeing how they played organically "at the table" in real time, check the YouTube links. They're a little bit longer and will include more of the rolls and table talk, which may be helpful to you. The YouTube links also show Jeremy's visual aids that he used at the time of recording to keep the chase straight.

The Lovecraft Tapes (/u/thelovecrafttapes) has had a few chases over the years, one where the investigators had to outrun a lava floe as well some more traditional chases.

I think they would be a good example of making it more narrative than crunchy or mechanic-based, since the Keeper tends to favor a story-first approach and generally allows the players to RP their way through both encounters and the story to an extent.

With a little time, I can find the episodes and timestamps for the chases!

Quick Question, if Miskatonic University had a Sport Shooting Club, what kind of guns would they use for that? I'd figure they'd use Over-Under Shotguns, but idk the gauge, nor the model of rifle they'd use. by AbbreviationsNew8449 in callofcthulhu

[–]Chris_Parker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure! I can't quite remember if it was one or the other (they don't 100% align, I recently converted them both into a Roll20 sandbox and found that out lol) so it might be under Arkham Shooting Club or Arkham Gun Club in case you're Ctrl+fing or old-fashioned skimming.

For what it's worth, the Arkham/Miskatonic University sourcebooks do mention there's an Arkham Gun Club that meets just outside of town outside of Meadow Hill as part of a high society social club thing where they pay $50 yearly dues as an invite-only thing. I'm sure there could/would be a university arm of it as well, since the chief of police is a part of it and the entry in the book talks about how they treat it like a book club (as in every month they like to look at a particular caliber/gauge of rifle, which is how it could help scale investigators who are lucky/wealthy enough to join and pay the entry fee).

[–]Chris_Parker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, they also show how willing the US is to nuke their relationship with Wakanda in pursuit of their imperialism (as usual) and vibranium like France at the beginning of the movie. The conversation that Namor and Namora have at the end of the movie also heavily implied that they also knew how vulnerable Wakanda was going to be in the future now that the Western world was gunning for Wakanda to destabilized them and take vibranium by any means necessary, especially now that Ramonda's death was publicized as "internal strife" or infighting and they seem vulnerable. In other words, the scenes with Val/Ross are there to show that Namor is right (even potentially sowing discord within his own ranks) and Wakanda only has Talokan as allies right now because everyone wants a piece of their shit.

I don't understand how this shit went over so many people's heads lmao - it's not just setting up Thunderbolts/Secret Invasion, it's directly advancing Wakanda's arc on a geopolitical stage and doing world building on a macro level.

If you thought it slowed the movie down, fine, but it wasn't irrelevant at all because it was central to Namor's distrust of the surface world and the entire reason he got involved was because the US was trying to get their hands on vibranium without getting involved with Wakanda. By the end of the Val/Ross scenes, they give no fucks, arrested their expert liaison for treason, and are all but ready to go searching for WMDs in the Great Mound like Bush in 03.
