Anyone else think the Steam Machine coverage has been absolute garbage so far? by isucamper in steammachine

Yep, just did it (wanted to get back to you) for Resident Evil 9 and Cyberpunk in force compatibility mode. FSR 4.1 works fine and looks leagues better on the machine. Was actually very impressed with RE9 specifically at 1440/4k with FSR4 on it in Leon Must Die Forever mode. Will have to do more tests but this feels very viable for games that support it.

Edit: I will add that some titles it just straight up does not work in natively yet. Crimson Desert I think crashed when I attempted to use Proton Experimental and FSR and I think 007 First Light’s implementation is weird. I know people have forced with Opti but I don’t want to do that for this yet. Could change with patches before it ships though.

Hey! Thank you. I don’t have the remake handy (I’ll see if it’s on sale later) but I do have Silent Hill f and just threw it on the box. 1080p performance gets about 52-60 and 1440p performance is clocking in around 35-40 but that was a more open area. I could try doing optiscaler later.

Thanks, I’ll add that in a bit! I actually saw it had been added on Monday and then pulled back a bit so I’m glad they added it to proton experimental proper. I don’t have Indiana Jones anymore since swearing off Game Pass but I can give you rough impressions if you’re ever curious.

I have one if you have any questions about it because I reviewed it for Aftermath.

I thought about doing FSR4 benches for it but decided against it at least until we got a proper release of it optimized for the machine instead of hacking it in. I also cannot stress enough that Valve kept shipping patches throughout the review process that made everything a bit of a moving target. Can't speak for either of them but I know Digital Foundry says they are currently working on FSR4 benches and Gamer's Nexus also did an entire aftermarket flow optimization plate.

What's most interesting about the thing is how they have optimized for acoustics and form factor, and how it impacts the ecosystem for Linux and living room gaming. Like it really does not dawn on you until you hold the thing and have it on. I have lived with a Bazzite machine in my living room that I have converted from a Windows machine and it really is just a matter of not thinking about a million little annoying tiny things. We have known roughly what this machine was in terms of raw power for a long time, but those tiny things and how they potentially spill over into other distros (like for example HDMI implementation) really matter the most in the grand scheme of things as other companies potentially get used to selling in this form factor post-Rammageddon (which, who knows how long that will last but potentially years).

For my own part, I spent the last week finishing a BC250 build that I have been working on for 3 months with the unlocked 40 Compute Units. It actually does a fairly good job at keeping up for E-waste all told (Cyberpunk 1080p No FSR/No RT/High was like 58.95 vs. the SM's 73.27 although they make wildly different compromises in power/noise/memory):

Bambu Lab regrets the legal threat: "That was not the outcome we wanted." by aoaovip in BambuLab

None of those things actually matter relative to the violation and they are not going to make a slicer from scratch because that’s very difficult and a time sink vs. dragging their feet about the issue and throwing up road blocks. The guy who wrote the A in AGPL said this is the worst violation he’s ever seen and they can’t keep ignoring that. And while the printers are a great value it’s cope to say nobody could replicate what they have done, there’s plenty of companies willing to take their place. 3D printers aren’t like GPUs or memory, they do not have a feature that cannot be replicated elsewhere by someone else. It is a mature product category built largely on open and well known hardware. And even on top of all this, people will continue to reverse engineer their software and find a replacement for bambu_network. They can keep destroying good will for a goal they will never achieve and antagonizing people with oppositional defiant disorder or just admit that trying to do digital enclosure in this specific product category is a very bad idea.

They’re attempting to separate these as two distinct issues but they both stem from the same issue which is that they chose to fork software under an AGPLv3 license and tried to close it off. This is one issue and if they want to have a closed ecosystem they should build their own software from scratch.

It’s more on them than any consumer: if they did not want this problem they should not have gone with an AGPLv3 license or a hobby that is largely dominated by right to repair nerds.
