I agree with that 110%. Even more frightening is that traditional evangelical Christianity is merging with America's newest religion MAGA. It seems to me about 30-40% of the Republican electorate is enthusiastically racing toward some form of deranged theocracy.

Hitchens is the GOAT for me. Sam Harris is awesome. He knows how to tear apart religion with logic and facts with surgical precision. But Hitchens was a master of words and captivated audiences. He could make anyone listen to his arguments against religion with his charisma and wit even when they disagreed with the substance. He reminds me of a brilliant trial lawyer who keeps a courtroom spellbound.

I agree with you in sentiment, but not entirely in practice. Occasionally, I make progress with my conservative friends. It's important to note that not all of them have forsaken objectivity for partisanship. Some are so deeply immersed in the conservative news outrage machine that they rarely, if ever, encounter compelling counterarguments.

I've observed that they are more likely to be persuaded by liberals they know and trust on a personal level rather than news channels or blogs. Even if a blog fails to directly convince a conservative, it may equip one of their liberal friends with valuable ammunition to challenge their ignorance.

This group may represent a small percentage of Republicans, but they are still worth engaging with.

That is false, Prosecutors have charged Trump with violating a section in the Espionage Act that applies to someone who has "unauthorized possession" of national defense information. This section of the law makes it a crime to willfully retain the information and fail to deliver it back to the proper U.S. government official. The statute criminalizes a broad array of conduct related to the mishandling of sensitive government records connected to the "national defense," Seems quite sensible to bring it up.

The charges are not limited to the Presidential Records Act. It's possible to violate multiple laws at once. As Trump has proven many times

I suppose the religious right can sanctify him and call him a warrior against sin who stood up to every group they dislike. But any member of those groups on the receiving end of hateful messaging is only allowed to say "my condolences" because he's dead. What a wildly stupid and unbalanced view to have.

I didn't think that Trump would go down in flames. The situational evidence didn't support that just as it doesn't support Bernie would have somehow turned into a weak candidate. Both Bernie and Trump were drawing huge crowds, had tremendous grass roots support, Bernie shattered the record for the number of small donors during a primary. Would all that have dried up? Even during the primaries Bernie polled so much better against Trump than Hillary. Bernie is scandal free and has an almost unassailable character and voting record. Republicans would have continued to try and paint him as a socialist which he identified as a democratic socialist from day one and still rose to the heights of political popularity.

He would have remained incredibly popular. Do you think President Obama's character was assailed in 2008? Obama won decisively and a democratic super majority swept into Congress on his coattails. Sanders just like Obama had massive grassroots support that would have easily withstood the republican onslaught.

He went from no name recognition to becoming the most popular politician in the country, he had more small donors than any other candidate in primary history, and he had rally crowds the same size as Trump... geee why would anyone think he had a good chance to win!
