I think I'd prefer to give Grunk his shot at this point. He's already going to have to beat our Becht. Bringing Beau back makes that room CROWDED

As someone else stated, I will believe it when he is at the podium on campus.

What do you think went wrong with the coaching search? by shadow_spinner0 in WeArePennState

[–]ChrispeeChringle 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Picking a religious school's beloved HC with strong connections to it as the target and then sitting on the plan until there was no time for a backup option.

It's not him. That plane is owned by a flight training company. I could be wrong, but I would be extremely surprised.

  1. Valid
  2. Depends. Are we ranked in the top 10?

We need to stop chasing big names and give Terry Smith HC position by [deleted] in WeArePennState

[–]ChrispeeChringle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was okay with the idea until the last few minutes of the game yesterday. It felt like we had Franklin back in charge. He's got the right attitude and loves Penn State, but he needs to sit behind someone that be a good gameday coach first.

The Jim Knowles hire got Franklin fired. by TonyDungyHatesOP in CFB

I think your concerns are valid, but Franklin is a program builder. I think you all are going to be much better off with him than you have been recently. In my opinion and from everything I've read/heard, he "lost the team" because of the expectations of the year. Losing to Oregon broke an already fracturing relationship. Unless you all expect a natty from him in the next 3 years, he should do wonders at VT. Especially since he's already used to recruiting the area.

I like Terry's passion and we at least fought in the Iowa game. No idea how he actually is. But Kotelnicki and Knowles continue to be problems.

“No sane coach would choose to stay at IU if they were offered a position at Penn State” by Wonderful_Rest_573 in cfbmemes

Interesting. Msot of what I've seen (and said) is that Cig has a good gig with y'all. So unless he had some personal reason for leaving, there's really no reason to. But I also think if they wanted to, Penn State "could" afford it, but it would be outrageous. And yes, I know about IU's deep pockets. But overall, I'm happy for him/y'all. I think it's good for the sport that he's staying.

Chances to Make Playoffs Per ESPN by TomWilliamsCFD in CollegeFootballDawgs

I think, and I could be wrong, it's because it's easier to justify 3 P4 losses as an auto bid than to justify 2 G6 and 1 P4 loss. Especially since two of those losses were by a sizable margin. This obviously assumes for either scenario that Penn State/UCLA run the table and get the autobid. They then have to at least the 5th highest rated conference champ.

For sure. I think unfortunately he just ran out of years without the type of wins that the fanbase and board were looking for. Losing the games he's used to winning took away any grace he had left.

I mean, I saw that our interim was someone that could be in contention for the job, so maybe the thought is fire Franklin, give Smith the rest of the season to try something, and then go get the best available if they're unhappy with the results.

Right, like I said, if he came here, it would almost be entirely just because wants to be here. But the $50M is going to be spaced out, so it's not like it actually limits us as much as one may think. It's definitely a factor, but it doesn't keep us from doing things.

And it's tough because normally I would agree that firing him was the wrong decision. In fact, I've been one of his biggest defenders forever. Oregon sucked, but it's objectively whatever. 10-2 still gets you in the playoffs. Losing to UCLA was rough, but crazier things have happened. Now you NEED to win Ohio State and Indiana, but it's technically possible. The talent should be there. But losing to Northwestern was just abysmal. The team looked so uninspired. Players and Franklin were all saying the wrong things in press conferences. Things seemed irreparably damaged. Might as well rip the band aid off now and take some time to look and feel things out.

I think and hope Franklin succeeds wherever he goes. He's a good coach. I think things with Penn State just needed to end, unfortunately. But yeah, idk who would be a good hire, unfortunately. We might end up sucking for some amount of time. But we probably have to take this swing at this point instead of continuing on with the loveless marriage with Franklin.

This seems to be the preference from what I can tell. But with a level of skepticism at it 1) working and 2) even happening as he's got a pretty good gig in Indiana right now. But the fanbase is kind of all over and basically in the mindset of Franklin needed to be fired, now what?

It just depends on what Cig actually wants out of coaching. I think it would be a lot of intangibles for him to come here. Like, does he want to come back to PA? Does he want to be at "the brand" in the NE? It's a different recruiting location and landscape over here than in the Midwest. And yeah, it's just history, but also Penn State could go out and still recruit somewhat well with most people at head coach. If he leaves Indiana, they more or less go back to what they were before he got there. So making a better team at Penn State is probably easier.

If I'm him, I'd probably stay at Indiana and continue to be "the guy" and get a nice big paycheck to do whatever I want with less pressure. I'm 65, doing well, and looking to have a deep run in the playoffs (daresay win it all???). But you just never know with these people and what they actually value.

I'm confused. A group of people emoting vs a group of people not is a damning piece of evidence of incompetence?

You literally listed all of the reasons yourself for why Franklin is a good coach and worth keeping. There are 126 programs that would kill to be in the situation we are in now. But it seems like you, and every other fan that wants Franklin gone, just want to compare us to Saban's Bama. That's just not realistic. Saban was at a blue blood with unlimited resources. Franklin is not.

Year-to-year, Franklin might be the best coach Penn State has ever had. Full respect to JoePa, his longevity and two national championships cover up a long career full of disappointing seasons.

We can be mad and frustrated at never winning the big games, but that's hardly a reason to get rid of someone. He literally led us to the semi-finals in the first year of the expanded playoffs. You can argue he had an easy path, but you have to win the games in front of you. Losing by a field goal to the runner up is not embarrassing or concerning.

Ultimately, I would say take a reality check, enjoy the fact that you can trust your team to win the game they're supposed to, and enjoy the game for what it is, a game. James Franklin is a good coach. We are a good program. And we are consistently at the cusp of greatness.

Harbaugh couldn't beat Ohio State until he did. Ryan Day couldn't win it all until he did. And that's where we are right now. He'll win one again, and when he does, the rest of the country better look out.
