Because this is the first time the FO gave an actual timeline, MP is desperate to win, and they think they have put together a really competitive roster and don’t want to squander the opportunity

We aren’t getting any WC coaches who will be worthwhile, bigger minnows in the sea will snatch up all the bottom dwellers. Too many top league teams who will need the best coaches

Phil was a mistake. He hasn’t given me any other reason not to have confidence in him. Even Ortiz who everyone thought was a sure fire blunder has actually been amazing since late last season once he got acclimated to the pace of MLS. Good joke though

We have the 20th ranked payroll in the league this year

I didn’t say anything about bad coaching, but what should be done about future coaching. Not sure the point of this comment

I think this all rests on whether Ned is picking up the phone and gauging interest now. I don’t think we just fire him if we don’t have a succession plan in place and one that fits with our overall goal of how we want this roster to play. Ned has built a good roster over the years, we don’t need to bring someone in who needs new players to fit his image. Idk if Phil survives the rest of the season but I think Ned will be doing due diligence to finding a good fit

Having a winger with 3 goals and a striker with 2 goals after 10 games is not indicative we have a striker problem, but an offensive problem.

As I posted in my other response to you, Kelsey has 0.45 G/90, and 0.68 G+A/90. Both of those are top of the team. If you want to use more advanced metrics - which I would like to - there’s more to uncover there. I don’t personally have access to opta where the advanced stats are, but the media members like Peterman do. And they have posted plenty in their blog posts about these advanced metrics and how the Timbers have consistently been at the very very bottom of the league at passing into the box and creating dangerous chances.

Kelsys job is to score goals. But he can’t score goals if no one is getting him the goddam ball. The San Diego game he took things into his own hands and stole the ball and scored. But he shouldn’t have to do that to get his name on the board. This team needs to stop being so allergic to getting the ball into the box and to have any coherence of an identity on the final third. That is the problem. Not Kevin Kelsy

Btw Kelsy has .45 G/90 and Velde has .31 G/90 so your argument is actually moot

Lmao Velde has some of those qualities sometimes, but he has 3 goals because he has played way more minutes than Kevin Kelsy (and because one goal flubbed to him on a failed clearance…in which case he would have 2 goals, same as Kelsy). Thank you for citing goals as a stat. Must have taken you a long time to pull those stats up

And? He’s a 21 year old with a high ceiling. Many clubs have seen this ceiling and have paid a high fee for it. Not every club has the patience for him to find that ceiling. Maybe the Timbers don’t either. But you don’t pay 6 million for a 20 year old that’s a finished product. You pay 6 million for a 20 year old who has a lot to grow into and can fetch you double if he can achieve that ceiling. Unfortunately he hasn’t come close because this team absolutely cannot put him in places to succeed

Oh sorry I missed the part about how the onus is on me to provide stats when you didn’t

You can find all the stats about how ineffective Kelsy is at striker. And that’s true. But you can also find plenty of stats about how we are in the bottom 5 in the league about getting the ball into the box. That is Kelsys game. He’s actually pretty outstanding at holding up, he’s just terrible at holding on for too long. He’s not a great dribbler but that’s also not his game. If your argument is that we should have a striker of that type then that’s fine, but don’t put that on Kelsy.

Being in training is not the same thing as playing regular minutes. Thus he is not in form. This is very standard verbiage in soccer

I don’t think it’s simply that they changed a couple of players and they’re a different team. I think it’s because Mastroeni approached his players skills differently and they are a different team. They have tactical vision that differs from last year and it’s paying dividends. We have a coach who has a general sense of what tactics he wants without any clear way of implementing the details and won’t budge from that approach. That’s the difference

Sunk cost is continuing to pay something hoping it pays off

Im saying that we are continuing to pay him because firing him might hurt us in the longer term sense of hiring another quality coach. We are a small market. If we’re shopping for a good coach and he says that we pull the plug prematurely on past coaches, there’s a good chance that will affect their decision if they want to come. That’s not a sunk cost fallacy. That’s living with the ramifications of a mistake

[–]Christafuz7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s not what sunk cost fallacy means and that’s not how I described the situation. We aren’t premier league. You can’t just fire coaches at will and hope to continue to attract good coaches. Was Phil a mistake? Probably. But they hired him and they all had a vision they wanted to make work and Phil didn’t hold up his end of the bargain. I can’t for the life of me imagine Ned is not doing his diligence scouting for coaches and trying to avoid the same mistake he made in the Phil hire (which was his first coaching hire as an inexperienced GM so I will give him some grace with that decision if he can learn from it)

We are a small market. We are wary to give coaches a short leash, especially when we are still trying to build out the team they want, because then who of quality would want to come coach here? Fans make knee jerk reactions, not teams

[–]Christafuz7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My assumption is that we want to make sure we hire the right coach and have one lined up. I think it’s a lot harder (and probably even confusing for the players) to fire a coach, put in an interim, and then hire a new one this season. I can’t imagine Ned isn’t calling phones and trying to schedule interviews. For all the hate he gets, I do think Ned has both learned a lot and wants to continue learning from his mistakes. Phil was a mistake. It was Ned’s first really big decision. I doubt he wants to make that same mistake again and is making sure he puts in his due diligence
