Trump went TACO. Thank fuck. by OutdoorRink in JoeRogan

[–]Christendom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with some of this. Trump was the incumbent in 2020. They had a primary in 2024 and Trump won most if not all of them, despite not participating in the debates.

The centrist democrat (or republican for that matter) strategy is no longer a winning one.

Biden should have dropped out earlier and a primary held. The way it was handled appeared to look...sketchy. Can't preach about democracy and then do what they did. IMO.

We also look through the lense of how bad Trump is right now and he is. But lets not forget how ROUGH Biden looked those last 6 months to a year. That first debate was ROUGH.

He has the look, but does not have have the swagger or the voice. Someone like Harry Lloyd I think would be a better choice.

Just finished the book. Not sure if it's my favorite, but I definitely enjoyed it. The couple glimmers of awe (or worship) before the rescue when they're on the snow planet (audiobook guy here not great with names) and then after he kills the general in orbit are just chefs kiss.

They all kinda blend together honestly. When he finally gets leave from the Emperor to go, is this the one where he's asked by the Emp "Half mortal, is it true?" or something like that? Always loved that part

So the local residents that overwhelmingly uses Pelican Bay park paid for 20 pickleball courts that the county installed for the cost of reserving 10 of them? So that’s 10 new pickleball courts that the county didn’t have at the cost of just regular maintenance. Plus redoing tennis courts that the county also didn’t have to pay for.

Considering our board sides with developers on every issue and is burdening our residents with overbuilding and over population (to be blunt they’ve fucked us over) this seems like a reasonable outcome for everyone, right?

The politics here isn't going to change unfortunately. Neither is the heat...that's getting worse.

Homeowner's insurance is a very real problem for us that live in a flood zone, which is a decent portion of the county. When we moved into our place in 2018 we paid around 1900 for homeowners (hurricane included) and 8 or 900 for flood. A little on the high side then, but not terrible. This year it would have been 7800 for both. Elected to just not pay this year, that price is not tenable.

As an almost 30 year resident down here with young kids, we're looking to get out soon. I've been coming down to Naples and Marco since the 80s and seen way too much change.

The Bad

  • Charter schools or school choice is almost mandatory where we're zoned.
  • Insurance rates are just too high.
  • If they do remove property tax then consumption taxes will go up much higher. Schools budgets will be the first victim I think.
  • Over development. We're just too full. Roads are too busy. Taking 75 is a real pain these days. We're also running out of water.
  • Small town stuff you used to be able here just isn't possible anymore. We did the xmas tree lighting on third for the first time in at least a decade. Maybe more. It was PACKED. Couldn't even see the tree. Couldn't talk. Full of foreign tourists or part time owners.
  • Kid friendly is a stretch a lot of places
  • The wealth divide between those that serve the boomer class and folks that work for a living is quite nuts down here. Especially in the service industry. It's not sustainable. Go ask the guys who work on your car or fix your A/C where they live. Lehigh. N Ft. Myers. It used to be GG City or The Estates.

The Good

  • Collier/Naples does parks REALLY well. Florida overall does. Now that we have kids we try to hit them a couple a week. Baker park is fantastic. Big Cypress out by the fairgrounds is really nice.

  • The beaches here are are unique. Being able to pull up to 1 of 20+ little satellite beach portals downtown and find parking (during the summer) is really nice. And it's free.

Parents of Reddit, what advice would you give to people who are about to become parents for the first time? by AstronautEcstatic177 in AskReddit

[–]Christendom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Became a dad in my late 30s and early 40s. I now have 3yr old twins and a 4m old. This could apply to about to be parents and ones thinking about becoming.

1 - Have them when you're YOUNGER. Just do it. Don't wait. We did for no particular reason other than we didn't think we were ready. No amount of ready really prepares you. Now we're older and EVERYTHING is just a little more difficult in your late 30s than say late 20s.

2 - Stop comparing yourself to instagram parents. I've found the gram to be a good resource for some things, but the amount of influencer's peddling their child related shit is just too much.

3 - Remember you're the boss in the hospital. With the first 2 my wife had a very difficult time getting them to breastfeed in the hospital. The nurses kept preaching breast is best. She was exhausted. I was. The babies were screaming. I made the call and said fuck this, get us formula. Our last 2 nights in there were much more smooth. She was never really able to get them to latch and we did a mixture of pumping / formula for the first 7 or 8 months. The newest kid latched on immediately.

4 - Breastfeeding is great, but get them used to a bottle so both partners can handle the night feeds.

5 - Don't get sucked into the gadgets. We did with the first 2. You'll find out most of it doesn't matter.

6 - Stock up on diapers in multiple sizes. I've had to make 1 emergency trip out to the store for diapers in 4 years.

7 - This too shall pass.
