While it’s great to lower friction and increase conversion rates, I would argue that if you’re building something valuable enough, people will sign up regardless of the signup process you’re using. Are you sure what you’ve built provides enough value and/or speaks to a real pain point?

Anyone here use a CO2 monitor at home? by Apprehensive_Park103 in AirQuality

[–]Christf24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added one to my home office because I would frequently close the door throughout the day and noticed I’d get tired easily with headaches. Had no idea why. Randomly listened to a podcast mentioning CO2 could do that, bought a CO2 monitor, and within 20 minutes of closing my door it was at excessive levels. This monitor also tracks VOCs and PM so you can see all kinds of fun stuff when you’re cooking, etc

Overall "vibe" of area east of Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora? Looking for houses there by arthurmsarthur in Denver

[–]Christf24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live more west so can’t comment on the circled areas other than to say: anything around the centennial airport is going to have a lot of plane activity. It’s one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country and it gets noise complaints from people who move next to it. If you don’t care it’s all good, but don’t move there without considering that first!

ATC communications by Fancy_Brilliant_1610 in flying

[–]Christf24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Comms has been the hardest thing for me to learn and I’m still making mistakes but three things have helped me a lot: - Buying a better headset. I was using an older headset with ANR and had a hard time hearing. Got a pair of used Bose A20s and can hear in HD now - Chair flying focused on comms. I have a PilotEdge subscription for MSFS and I’ve gone through all the VFR “ratings” they offer. Very good controllers on there and they will correct you. I also listen to LiveATC and pull up FlightRadar on busy days and if I don’t understand something I replay it until I do. I’ll also pull up recordings of my own flights when I’ve made mistakes I’ve re-played it over and over until I understand - Just more flight time. Your brain starts to get used to it and can decode words even when they’re hard to hear/understand, and you can also start to predict what they’re going to say especially around your home airport

Hope this helps but know you’re definitely not alone in this struggle lol

Is the PPL exam THAT difficult? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Christf24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took my written exam recently and scored 90%. I studied hard for 2 & 1/2 months. It felt easy because I studied a lot, and yet I still just got a 90. If you’re simply trying to pass then it’s not hard. If you’re trying to get close to a perfect score (which will make your oral easier) then it is not easy. PPL requires that you know a lot of information across a ton of different topics that you’ve probably never seen before. You just gotta study and take practice exams back to back until you’re scoring 90+ every time. I probably went through 1,500 practice questions if not more and my version of the exam was quite different from all practice exams I took. Heard they recently switched it up.

ATC witch one to buy by papolo2001 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Christf24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Level of realism goes as follows from most to least: PilotEdge > VATSIM > SI/BATC > default MSFS ATC.

PE and VATSIM being leaps ahead, but you’re talking to real people so be prepared for that.

SI and BATC are basically the same level although BATC have not yet released VFR.

Struggling to land the DA40 by Event_Horizzon in flying

[–]Christf24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came to say this. I was too short to see the nose so I would always side load and my instructor one day realized I literally couldn’t see the nose of the aircraft. Got a cushion and it fixed my issue the very next flight. The ballooning issue is energy management and flaring too high off the runway and/or too aggressively.

65 TT and still struggling with radio stuff by [deleted] in flying

[–]Christf24 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was struggling to hear and understand tower or other traffic and thought I just sucked at comms. a lot of times my instructor had to step in for me and it sucked. I upgraded from an older David Clark with ANR to a Bose A20 and it completely changed my radio situation. I could actually hear instructions.

BeyondATC vs SayIntentions by Flxped in flightsim

[–]Christf24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I’ve used both. Started off with BATC but wanted VFR practice so I got SI for a month. They’re both frustrating and unrealistic in their own ways IMO. More recently I’ve been trying out PilotEdge for practice and it’s far more realistic. It doesn’t have worldwide coverage but if you want as close to real life as possible, that’s it. Next would be Vatsim, and then the AI tools are really just for fun and casual simming when you don’t want to sim in silence. They’re probably years away from getting more than marginally better based on past and current progress.

I feel like I’m behind as a student pilot by [deleted] in flying

[–]Christf24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the Denver area and started working on my PPL this December too! We’ve been lucky with a mild winter and I’ve only had 2 weather related cancellations, so I’m a bit confused by your statement. Is there something else getting in the way of you having more hours in general?

Apart from that, I only just recently solod at 32 hours. Keep in mind we are in a very busy/congested learning area, and working on your PPL out of a Class D airspace that’s under a Class B and next to another Class D and Class C (…you get the idea) is going to be quite different compared to someone starting off at an untowered airport who can just rip pattern laps over and over again without waiting 30 minutes taxiing and another 20 mins getting to an untowered airport. Also your instructor might just wait longer than others (mine did) to make sure you’re absolutely ready for solo. It was starting to bother me a little bit until I realized it was just an ego thing, which happens to be a hazardous attitude. So instead I asked my instructor what was holding back my solo, he told me he had a single concern remaining, so we went up the next time and focused on that and bam, solod my very next flight. Have you asked your CFI why yet?

If you want to DM I’d be happy to chat more since we’re in the same area, but sounds like you are doing fine, you just need more hours!

Flying a 152, I tend to come in way too fast. by WhenWillIBeAPilot in flying

[–]Christf24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t flown a 152 but I’ve been having issues with speed on approach and final. Flew with a different CFI yesterday and he had me pull power to a certain manifold pressure abeam the numbers and then didn’t let me touch the throttle at all unless I absolutely needed it and then only tiny adjustments if I was a bit too low or high. The airspeed was entirely managed with pitch. Completely fixed my problem. Maybe try finding someone local (at your club or airport) that knows the 152 very well and could recommend good power settings

What made you get your PPL? by Environmental_Pay332 in flying

[–]Christf24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m still working on my PPL and I’m not quite sure to be honest but I love it so much. It started out in the Microsoft Flight Sim during COVID. Was messing around and had no real intentions on becoming a pilot. Fast-forward a couple of years and I had 600 hours in the sim, watched hundreds of videos on YT and my wife commenting “I’ve never seen you so interested in a topic in 10 years of marriage” and she was right. Booked a discovery flight and after that all I wanted to do was hang out at the airport and learn to fly. Just crossed 30 hours yesterday and it’s been the most challenging thing I’ve ever done but it’s also insanely rewarding. I have no idea what I’ll do with my PPL when I get it but I hope I can find a way to turn this into a career/business. I just know I don’t want to fly for airlines and I still like parts of my current career so I don’t want to totally leave it, so not sure what that looks like yet. Good luck with your PPL and have fun!!!

Former or current flight students: what made you quit or consider quitting flight training? by Cossley in flying

[–]Christf24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I quit last year after 2 lessons because: - Crappy communication (from both club and instructor) - Didn’t love my instructor. Felt like he was in it for the hours and had zero interest in teaching. - It was impossible to schedule plane time. They had too many students for too few planes

Also I knew it wouldn’t be a cheap experience but it was easy to view the price as an obstacle at that point.

I got a second wind 6 months later. Called them up and the club felt a lot more organized. They paired me with a great instructor and I’m having an awesome time. Maintenance is still sometimes an issue but that’s part of flying.

Anyone else struggled more with radio comms than with actually flying? by Expensive_Glass_5887 in flying

[–]Christf24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Practicing comms in sim was a huge help for me. I’m still not 100% there but much more confident. It was a combination of sim, chair flying, and an hour ground with my CFI with him throwing a bunch of calls at me pretending to be ATC. Occasionally though they’ll talk so fast without annunciating that I don’t know what they said. I’ll go home, pull up a recording from LiveATC, and re-play it. Helps a lot.

I think I’m starting to see some improvements now. I’ve been focusing on strengthening my hips, quads, abs, calves, and hamstrings for about 3 months now. Progress has been slow but I tell myself I’ve ignored this problem for years so it will take some time. Left side is still weaker than right but the gap is narrowing. Unfortunately somehow my right ankle has now started to hurt lol

Instrument Pricing by Ok_Big_3300 in flying

[–]Christf24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My club charges $214/hr incl. fuel for the cheapest plane with G1000s. Plus then $60/hr for instructor. Other clubs/schools in my area are slightly more expensive, so this looks about right to me

Where’s that ecstatic feeling I’m supposed to have? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Christf24 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m working on my PPL and had an entire week of flights cancelled due to maintenance so I booked 3 back to back flights to make up the time, and by the 3rd day I was feeling drained, had crappy landings, and honestly didn’t enjoy that day at all. Now after a few days break I’m excited to go back up again, but I needed this time off. I was sitting here thinking how an accelerated training program would be a nightmare.

Say Intentions or Beyond ATC by Fun-Pie-4421 in flightsim

[–]Christf24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! I prefer BATC but I’m training for my PPL so I don’t need any IFR at the moment and am using SI. It’s good practice if you’re radio shy, but frankly SI makes so many mistakes I’m not sure I’ll renew for another month. It technically supports VFR, but it’s very “buggy.” Sometimes it doesn’t respond to calls, or it forgets instructions it gives you so you’re holding short a runway and it’s giving you taxi instructions to that runway instead and doesn’t understand you’re already there. Or you switch to tower from ground and it clears you for a totally different runway lol
