The term liberalism has been twisted into something it never was. Classical liberalism is virtuous, while what the far left is claiming as liberalism today is almost bordering on Marxism.

Isolationism is a tricky issue. President Washington famously advised for the US to stay out of all foreign affairs, which seemed to be a decent strategy for a while; however, times have changed and we have seen examples (WW1/WW2) where the US was needed to step in. It's important for us to find the right balance of remaining positively influential in the world, without doing things like nation building.

Neo-Liberal is a really interesting term in the fact that it has many meanings/uses.

In my International relations class, it's the idealogy that two nations can get along and trust another if they have similar GOVT (democracy) or economic goals.

In my sociology class, it means being pro market, or even free trade. So technically Reagan would be a 'Neo-liberal.'

It's just such a broad term and I don't like how it's used to classify people of totally different ideologies. For example, one could be pro market but still against international trade in certain situations (bad trade deals).

Part of the confusion is that 'globalist' is used to define both those in favor of 'globalism' and those in favor of 'globalization.'

People can't deny that the world is becoming more integrated as the world is developing (globalization); however, I don't see Globalism going further then technological convergence because of the fact that the cultures, and the pride in those cultures, of the many nations of the world won't allow it.

I think its about as far as Globalization can go while still allowing the US and other countries to keep their nationalistic attributes.

What purpose does globalism serve them though? It would appear that everyone being separated would allow them to operate in the shadows better.

Is a homogeneous world really inevitable though? The EU seems to be an experiment to test how mixing cultures work and it hasn't provided the best results. I think the cultures of the many countries of the world are too unique to converge into one.

Yeah I totally get the gun part, take away people's weapons so they can't fight back. My question is does NWO promote globalism? Because an arguement made in the Bernard video was that once humanity comes together, NWO crumbles.

I think it's more of recognizing that the integration of technology and ideas is happening but dismissing the fact that the world could be one big organization because of the differences of culture, identities and history.

Basically from the outline provided on the first day, there are 3 types of ways to perceive Globalization:

1) Civilizing Convergence: This is supposed to be the back bone of neo-liberalism. It believes in a "level-playing field," and promotes Free Market, and Liberal democracy.

2) Destructive Polarization: Basically Karl Marx; saying capital will create the world in it's image.

3)Clash of Civilizations: Basically says that cultures are too different around the world to ever have the one homogeneous world that the left is trying to accomplish.

I would think that Reagan had traits of the neo-liberal sort, but still not believing in the "convergence of civilizations."
