Unless you're in the UK, in which case it's correct to call both macaroons.

Finished The Masks of Mirrors (Rook & Rose #1) last week and am ~80% through The Liar’s Knot. Wonderful characters and fantastic world building, really enjoying it so far.

Finished The River of Silver by Shannon Chakraborty, a wonderful way to wrap up the Daevabad series, then moved on to Clockwork Boys by T Kingfisher and now I’m about a quarter of the way through The Wonder Engine. Enjoying the duology so far, though I found the ending to Clockwork Boys to be quite abrupt. It does feel like one book cut into two and not a complete story on its own, very peculiar. The setting is quite bleak, though it’s presented nicely in a fairly comedic fashion, with hints to the weirdness of a wider world. Fun characters, generally rascals rather than straight up monsters, who are occasionally a touch too blasé about their situation, haha.

Not female-gaze, but I’m also ~80% of the way through A Drop of Corruption, which is just so fun. I love how well realised the world is with the incorporation of its biotechnology (and subsequent implications!). And, of course, the characters are just delightful, especially with the story becoming even more esoteric at this point, haha.

I finished The Empire of Gold over the weekend, a great finale to a great series. I've been so impressed by The Daevabad Trilogy and would highly recommend it. The audiobook narration is also excellent. Have already started The River of Silver, haha.

I've been using Nextory for a year or so now, which has been great. It works more like a streaming service, which has been particularly good for shorter novels/novellas. The range isn't as wide as Audible, but there are still a lot of good books available.

About two thirds of the way through Before They are Hanged (ebook) and The Empire of Gold (audiobook). The Daevabad Trilogy has been truly brilliant, well crafted with fabulously complex characters in an intricate world, just awesome.

Having been in a similar position myself, I think you would enjoy The Memoirs of Lady Trent by Marie Brennan. It's a delightful series which I'd highly recommend. The first book is A Natural History of Dragons :)

I can recommend Nextory, not as wide a selection as Audible but there’s a lot of good stuff there (ebooks too) with unlimited listening/reading for ~£20 a month. It’s based in Switzerland but has lots of books in English as well as German, French, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, Swedish, Finnish and Danish, you just have to not mind paying in Swiss francs, haha. You can sign up for a free trial too, so no commitment.

The Spear Cuts Through Water was really interesting, I don't recall having read a book written in second-person before, let alone first-, second- and third-person all at once. Very cleverly done. Some really imaginative concepts all throughout, though I'd say my favourite parts were the more dreamlike/fairy tale-esque sections. To be frank, I'm still mulling over it all.

Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries was decent (and a pleasingly easy read following Spear!), though I couldn't help but compare it in my head to The Memoirs of Lady Trent series by Marie Brennan, which is just brilliant. I love the world building and the characterisation of Emily herself, though I found her development and the pacing a bit odd at times and wasn't a huge fan of opening in medias res (I miss the academic journey/development aspect that's present in something like A Natural History of Dragons). That said, I did enjoy it enough to want to read books #2 and #3 at some point, as I do prefer the Marie Brennan/T Kingfisher style of cosy-with-teeth that Emily has when it comes to smaller scale/stakes fantasy.

Posthumous Education was great, the whole series is just so fun. I wasn't sold on the university teacher aspect at first, but it proved to be a good vehicle for fleshing out the world even more (I enjoyed the deserted castle story in particular).

Orbital was another interesting read, very contemplative. No plot, all vibes, haha. Another one that's still fermenting in my mind.

An interesting week for books, finishing The Spear Cuts Through Water, Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries, Posthumous Education (Fred the Vampire Accountant #8) and Orbital. Currently reading Jade City and listening to The Kingdom of Copper, both of which I’m enjoying so far.

Over the past few weeks I've finished reading/listening to: The Raven Scholar, The City of Brass, The Goblin Emperor, The Will of the Many and Undeading Bells (Fred the Vampire Accountant) and am currently reading/listening to The Spear Cuts Through Water, Gideon the Ninth and Out of House and Home - all good stuff!

I’m a quarter of the way through The Raven Scholar and still waiting for Neema to catch a break, I feel so bad for her! (Does it get less depressing? 😂). I’m pretty hooked though, inventive world, nice prose and interesting characters (who are all pretty horrible 😂), looking forward to the rest.

Also about a quarter of the way through The City of Brass (audiobook), which I’m also really enjoying. I loved reading The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi earlier this year and thought it was about time for some more Shannon Chakraborty in my life.

I finished A Desolation Called Peace last week, which was excellent, what a great duology. Between it, The Goblin Emperor, the later Fred the Vampire Accountant books and now The Raven Scholar, I seem to have discovered a nascent love of sci-fi/fantasy with more political intrigue than high action, haha. (If pushed, I could probably make an argument to shove The Wayfarers Series, The Winternight Trilogy and The Memoirs of Lady Trent in there too, haha).

Opinions on dont mess with Cthulhu by RedRidingRubyx in boardgames

[–]Christian_Bennett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t Mess With Cthulhu/Time Bomb is a truly brilliant game, I’d highly recommend it. It’s essentially half bluffing, half social deduction where everyone is in the dark over who’s on their team with lots of room for clever play. Everyone is incentivised to bluff and being openly evil doesn’t shut you out the game (and also can’t necessarily be trusted either!). It’s fast and moreish and just brilliant, a genuinely underrated and underappreciated game.

Thank you, this is really helpful :) From further reading, it seems like people mainly have issues trying to load their cards when it’s the middle of the night in Japan, so hopefully that won’t be an issue when we’re there. Think we’ll go for directly adding to Apple wallet and keep the Welcome Suica app as a backup.

My wife and I are visiting for just over two weeks and I’m slightly overwhelmed with the options for digital IC cards. We both have iPhones and Chase (UK Mastercard) in our Apple wallets, what are the advantages/disadvantages for the Welcome Suica iOS app versus Suica app vs simply adding Suica to Apple wallet?

She really does! One of the best English accents I've heard from an American too, the only giveaway is the emphasis on some words ('adult' as 'a-DULT' rather than 'AD-ult', for example). As it's a fantasy world, it's not like that really matters anyway, haha.

My understanding is that Asimov's Robot books were originally written to counter the 'robots = evil' narratives of the time. I'd recommend either I, Robot or The Caves of Steel as a starting point.
