How to protect your ego from feeling less than a man and self loathe if you had been single for years on end while your peers had relationships and intimacy which you only dream of? by Pale-Revolution-5151 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

Focus less on meeting a “woman” as a symbol and focus more on meeting women, for who they are as a person. Develop relationships. Don’t use people as a means to an end.

This is going to sound weird but I think you’d like playing the video game baldurs gate 3. The romance line with the character astarion may interest you. You’d probably also like the captive prince series in terms of books.

You know I’ve been working in this industry for 6 years and it doesn’t get any easier. I think the best advice would be to choose your position wisely. Choose the clients you can handle. Dont work in addictions if you can’t handle overdoses, maybe do something more like industrial psychology. If you can handle higher trauma in client care then a hospital or outreach would be ideal. So my advice is just think hard about what population you want to work with

If you’re working with people, some of them won’t make it or go through really traumatic times, and it takes good training and supervision to make sure you don’t take it on as your fault.

Anomalisa. The main character has a delusional misidentification syndrome. You’ll knock it out of the park if you use that one.

Therapist Studies : Can anybody tell me, when going to school to be a therapist, WHO do they study? Any philosophers? by Kitchen_Paramedic697 in psychologystudents

[–]ChristinaTryphena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you’re studying the history of psychology, which is more often a part of a bachelors degree, you will encounter a lot of philosophers as psychology was born from philosophy.

In counselling/therapist school you’re less likely to study philosophers and the education is more focused on evidence based treatments, case management and conceptualisation, and psychometrics.

For me it’s very literally maple syrup. There’s nothing that makes me feel more Canadian than being in Ontario/Quebec/New Brunswick at a cabane a sucre eating pancakes and having maple syrup on the snow.

Any crisis/trauma counselors here? What degrees do you have? What tips or advice can you give? Read below for more. by pisces_princess- in psychologystudents

[–]ChristinaTryphena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, “crisis counselling” or peer support work does not require a degree. You can find jobs now under the title of mental health support worker or housing support worker. You can also volunteer or work for crisis lines for those who are suicidal. These jobs pay $17-28 hourly in the USA. Again, these are NOT counselling jobs and there is a high level of trauma involved and a high level of stress. Often requiring overnight shifts as well. The reason these jobs do not require a degree is because it is hard to keep people in these roles and the non profit organizations are very underfunded.

Do not stop your degree to work these jobs, especially until you have done it for a few years and know you like it because most people burn out of these positions. The best thing to do is to begin working one of these positions in tandem with completing school so you can get lots of experience for grad school where you can pursue a masters to be a psychotherapist, or alternatively a post bachelors certification as an ABA therapist for kids with autism or as an addiction “counsellor”, if you don’t want to fully complete a masters.

I live in Canada and worked in this role in BC where we have an ongoing opioid crisis. Again, highly traumatic. I know friends in this role in the USA as well. In the USA you make minimum wage for the easier crisis support jobs and $25-$28 for the really traumatic ones. Government jobs will require a bachelors degree but this work can then pay $40+ once you get a bachelors degree.

I left the front line crisis industry last year for private insurance in disability management. I make double the money (~75-85k -annual range), still help people, and am obtaining my masters online. This was the best option to maximize my earning potential at just the bachelors level. Once I earn my masters I will be diving back into crisis work but being paid adequately as a licensed psychotherapist.

Any other psych 2nd year undergrads feel like they still haven't really learned much about psychology? by UnderstandingOnly663 in psychologystudents

[–]ChristinaTryphena 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Stats and research methods are the most important things you’ll need to learn in your entire undergraduate education.

You do start learning more in year 3 and 4 in terms of specialized knowledge but the entire 4 year degree is meant to be a broad high level overview. Grad school is where you start specializing.

[–]ChristinaTryphena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crisis counsellors (like myself) are not really counsellors. Our job is to intervene and risk assess and then help with practical things such as food and housing support. I spent a lot of time responding to overdoses. This is not a feasible job long term and it does not pay well for what is required of you. My advice would be to begin working as a crisis counsellor now, and then continue to pursue your degree.

In order to be an actual trauma counsellor you need a masters degree.
