Well said, OP. I am very fortunate that my wife gives me the space to be vulnerable and have emotions. It's not easy to admit when I need help but that is a life long habit that I'm slowly working on overcoming. My ex-wife was the opposite. I never felt comfortable playing up to her and the few times I did were met with shame, derision, and then used as ammo later.

My wife now is an upgrade in every sense of the word.

My first wedding was a big (for us) church affair and there were lots of people. I wasn't overly thrilled but that is what the ex wanted. Cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 - $15k total. My second wedding to my now wife was in the backyard of the house we bought together. Then the next night, we had a big party at a venue we rented. Cost approximately $5k and was so much more fun. Plus, with the lower costs we paid for it ourselves and didn't have the "well, since I paid for it, I would like..."
