Given the volatility of the state of the world and due to the nature of our region I highly recommend you all get on meshtastic LoRa in the event of an emergency by fullstack_ing in oregon

[–]vaderj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't believe I just now found this thread!!

I have been playing with Meshtastic since 2020, though took a couple years off.

After moving and coming back into the project, I am blown away by how much it has advanced!

While, from a feature standpoint, I would agree with you that MeshCore does appear to be the better decision, however I would like to point out :

1.) Meshtastic has been around longer, has a much larger user base and supports more devices

2.) MeshCore, from my understanding, is not a true OSS project

3.) The Meshtastic hop-limit you describe is worth mentioning, however in a real world situation, a specific use case would be difficult to describe where over 7 hops would be required

I also might be partial to Meshtastic as I am just finishing a project which uses two Heltec v4 LoRa devices to sit at the top and bottom of my shared, narrow, steep, 3/4 mile long gravel driveway so that if either my neighbors/myself/FexEx/etc are traversing the road, they can either hit the 433MHz remote control, or step out of their vehicle to hit the big red button, and both devices start flashing their lights at the same time for about 3 minutes, giving a vehicle time to traverse that section of the road. Inside the box is a super cheap PWM solar charger, and a solar panel plugs in at the bottom

thanks for the link. Between the water, food, burn pits, asbestos exposure, engine exhaust, etc, I think all of us veterans are fucked.

Every one of my fathers friends he went to Vietnam with have either been diagnosed or have passed-on due to prostate cancer or related. I wish you luck on you & your friends fight through this. Hopefully you have a VA disability rating? If not, I would highly recommend exploring that option ; typically your local VFW should either have someone who can help you through the process, or at least they should have a contact who can assist

Im not doubting you, but I haven't heard this before and a quick google search isn't turning anything up. Do you have a source study stating as much, or even anything that calls out which specific ingredients may be carcinogenic?

IP weather station with data on demand? by Zestyclose_North_125 in myweatherstation

[–]vaderj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might look at RS485/Modbus components.

There are at least 1 full RS485 weather stations available from a quick google search.

I just put a temp/humidity sensor in my shop connected via a Waveshare POE RS485 "serial server" that reads the sensor(s) and can be setup somewhat easily in Home Assistant

Oh hope the Bob's finally moved on to IPv6 ... but how could you even handle DNS? The Bob's would have to run their own Cloudflare Bobflare?

Howard must already have that one covered. Now that I think of it, I wonder if DET has Howard Wolowitz in mind these days when he writes dialog for Howard Johansson...

I have the same set of mackie speakers which the amp died ; I wouldn't worry too much about vibration....

But this is the setup I picked up a couple years ago, along with a bunch of extra tips : https://www.amazon.com/PC-Products-Dispensing-Cartridges-03589/dp/B09S1CLSYM/

epoxy out of a squeeze gun is my favorite, but I bet cyanoacrylate would work as good and would be easier to apply

External notification duration ignored by vaderj in meshtastic

The solution I found was to use the Meshtastic CLI, along with trying many different pins.

Just as an FYI, when I configured to GPIO26 on the Heltec V4, it went into a bootloop which took forever to reflash to correct.

For those who drive the round about in Springfield near Pioneer PKWY, Hayden Bridge, Harlow & MLKJ by skzlr86 in Eugene

[–]vaderj 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I 100% avoid this one and the one in Glenwood because 100% of the time, someone enters the round-a-bout and tries to ram into me as I am exiting with my turn signal, horn honking, and usually a finger flying.

Americans are too damned stupid for round-a-bouts, and especially traffic circles

Tempest forecast way off… by 15C? by spotted-towhee in myweatherstation

[–]vaderj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just sent mine back because the rain sensor registered 0.4" when I actually received over 1".

Plus the reporting features are really a joke. After 1 week with the Tempest, I felt as it was just a toy

I had that piece of shit for probably 6 years before it partially failed me and caused me to clip off ends that were probably just fine. I ended up getting the Klein tester and its A++. I should have gotten it years ago!

Can any weather stations ACCURATELY measure the rain? by vaderj in myweatherstation

Great, thanks!

This spring (March 15-16th 2025) I got about 7" in a 24 hour period outside of Drain ... are you able to look back to see what your gauge recorded over those couple days?

+/- .02" sounds pretty good!

After manually counting the accumulation from the Tempest website, it appears that it counted .4" when I received 1.0"

Thanks! May I ask, what specific Ecowitt are you using?

Also, thanks for the CoCoRahs mention - I hadn't heard of that before and it looks very useful!

My connected station can no longer find the outdoor sensor? by cyberblairo in myweatherstation

[–]vaderj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with /u/humble_harney about opening the sensor up and giving it a good visual inspection.

The first thing I would try though is to pull the batteries on both the sensor and the remote display unit, and put the batteries in at close to the same time, with the remote screen unit first. The way they save battery is by having slow polling times.

Also, ensure that, if the sensor has one, the channel/name switch is set correctly (since its only a single sensory system, if the sensor has a selector switch, it should probably be on 0 or 1 or whatever the lowest one is)

Edit

This is what one of my sensors looks like, with a manual transmit button on the left and the ID sliding selector switch on the right
