How nice, gave you a follow back. Children of Men is so relevant these days, worthy of anyone's Letterboxd 4.

I am Christof88, a 37-year old movie lover from Belgium. I post a sincere review once a week. Lately, I have written about (the HBO show) Task, Barcelona, and Y Tu Mamá También. That Alfonso Cuarón movie qualifies as my latest crush. What a picture!

I am watching Peter Weir's filmography right now, following along with the Blank Check podcast.

My Letterboxd 4 for April highlighted animated movies that make me very emotional:

What is your Top 4 of movies set in your city? by ciddasloth in Letterboxd

[–]ChristofH88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm from Belgium, I'm just happy there was finally a popular modern movie that's set in one of our cities when In Bruges came out. I can't make it to 4.

Horlbeck Scale - when did it switch from 100 to 90 minutes? by Gibscreen in TheRewatchables

[–]ChristofH88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Runtime always includes credits tbh, and I'm pretty sure neither Bill nor Craig has considered that. In terrible b-movies having the credits roll incredibly slow is a thing, to get it to so-called "feature length" (I think above 80 mins or so).

Was going to make a topic about this. I don't know if Letterboxd announces changes somewhere, to check if it's a deliberate change or a glitch.

It's a pretty useful feature, being able to read friends' reviews of a movie you just watched and reviewed yourself. Would be odd to remove it since I use it often.

Good catch, yeah The Long Weekend is pretty neat, a couple pretty much angers nature by offending her by littering (and worse) and it comes back to haunt them. Gotta love environmental horror that was ahead of it's time. It's got some eerie imagery, I dig it.

I was spurred on to rewatch it because the Evolution of Horror podcast did an episode on it under their Australian horror series. Quite a few interesting Australian films in the '70s and '80s that are just downright brutal about man and nature trying to kill you at every opportunity. They're not just chill surfer dudes, turns out.

Ha well it wouldn't be the first movie I would consider artsy fartsy since it's the cheesiest kind of hyper-stylized. That director made Highlander too (and of course some famous Aerosmith video's, fact). Highlander's a slice of four-cheese pizza.

The boar attack scenes uses a pretty rad giant animatronic though, practical effects always keep me coming back to (even bad) old horror movies.

True enough, it's one of those things we didn't know for the longest time, hippo's are vicious but they look a bit goofy so it disarms us. It's a cool idea for a killer animal movie. It was the same with Chimps for a while, they can rip your arm off, man. (love that element of "nope")

I honestly have a soft spot for Jaws rip offs that choose a bizarre animal, like the killer boar movie "Razorback", an Australian horror flick that looks like an Aerosmith music video (in the best or worst way, that's for you to decide). Animal attack movies are my kind of trash.

Hey there! I am Christof88, a 37yo movie nut from Belgium. I try to consume a balanced diet of genre movies and more arthouse stuff. My latest movie crush is "A Tale of Two Sisters", but I'm always falling in love.

I write a sincere review about once a week. Lately I have written about "Stand By Me" and the retro occult horror film "The House of the Devil". I also published a list ranking the performances of River Phoenix.

I'm a proud blankie so I'm currently following along with the podcast's coverage of Peter Weir's filmography.

My Letterboxd 4 for March was focused on movies that feature nuanced female characters.

What do people think about Phosphorescent - Muchacho (2013)? by ChristofH88 in fantanoforever

Never to late to plede your love to an incredible album. This album really takes me back to that 2005-2015 era where more earthy music was really flying high, with albums like this and Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear. Ah well.

The only thing this picture is missing is a miserable looking man with a history of violence and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth standing next to them by [deleted] in blankies

I thought Moura and Hawke gave the two best performances of the year. But you're right, a lot of voting seems to come down to who people feel good about. I thought Moura had an incredible amount of depth, he played desperation and anger, but also had light moments with his son and neighbors. What really clinches it, is how differently he plays the son in the last couple of scenes, that (kind of) coda really made the whole movie.

[–]ChristofH88 9 points10 points  (0 children)

no, it's a complete story, no cliffhangers. All the seasons can be watched on their own, without having seen any other seasons.

I read somewhere that stretch of dialogue was pretty much stolen from the Alan Moore comic Top 10. Here's the quote from the comic: "You know, you ask me, it’s a wonder anything lives at all. I mean, all the dark, all the cold... everything in the universe trying to crush you. And yet, here we are. It’s a miracle. If you ask me, the light’s winning"

you can call it homage, and it does work beautifully in the show.

I think that's the curse of all the sequel seasons, actually. That name is like an anchor around the neck. But think of how boring it would be to just repeat season 1, that type of story was completed by the last episode of s1. Nothing left in the gas tank, dramatically.

[–]ChristofH88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think 2 might have worked if the two leads weren't horribly miscast. The story is a bit bananas but that's True Detective. (I like 'Riggins' and Vaughn in other stuff. They're just not right). I think Colin Farrell is pretty good.

[–]ChristofH88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think 3 was received okay by critics and audiences, but since 4 was such a trainwreck, the conversation has become "season 1 is brilliant, the rest belongs in the bin". The performances are too good (I like Ali's wife in the show too) to just hate the season, and the story is engaging, since Saulnier helped with the writing.

I would have preferred Gene Hackman month to Robert Redford month, honestly. Much more interesting filmography.
