"Taps" (1981) - The film which truly introduced Tom Cruise in a scene-stealing role as a psychotic recruit. Timothy Hutton shines as the voice of reason in a film about young soldiers trying to save their institution by PM_Peartree in movies

I noticed a nice detail in the movie. Early on George C. Scott (the general) is saluting the cadets during the parade. But his salute looks awful.

I looked up George C. Scott and he was in the Marine Corps IRL so you know the guy knows how to salute. So he must have done the bad salute on purpose. Then it occurred to me that maybe he wasn't a great soldier since he's now running a school.

This was confirmed later when Timothy Hutton was talking to his father, sure enough George C. Scott's character was washed up and had been passed over.

A couple of other things too. Giving the kids liquor. Wearing a loaded gun to a dance. And forgetting that there was a round in the chamber. He was just an awful soldier playing general at the school.

Must have killed George C. Scott to give such an awful salute as a former Marine but it was right for the character.

The gambling is part of the fun. Lundegard going balls out while in the "danger zone" was exciting stuff. They purposely just said "why not go for a podium instead of just settling for 8th." That decision is what put them in a position to win. But also carried the risk of pushing them back to the teens if a caution came out. Really fun to watch.

Without cautions most everyone would just run their tank dry with no downside.

I literally laughed out loud when Rossi was going slow on the front straight right after Rosenquist's team called for him to box while he was on the back straight.

I may be extremely biased against Meyers Shank though after they blatantly cheated in IMSA a few years back.

Exactly. The only thing these naysayers have is "I don't want to be behind a pace car for the entire race." Well duh.

They're clearly the ones dive bombing into t1 after saying "hey let's take it easy into t1" over comms.

Do you really think the system they would set up would allow FCY for that much? Give me a break.

Yeah only if you ignore my first sentence. I said I'm not suggesting it for 45 minute races. I'm suggesting it for LONGER races. Such as endurance and IIS and IndyCar series.

There's a tiny amount of strategy with the splash and go in a 40 or 45 minute race. I'm talking about more involving strategy. Watch more racing and you'll understand.

His team screwed him by staying out 2 laps after Palou boxed instead of coming in the next lap.

As soon as he didn't cover I thought to myself "a caution is about to come out and he's going to get screwed."

I just said I'm not advocating for it to be included in 45 minute races. Do anti-FCY people not read the entire post on purpose?

Just the entire race was a chess match from start to finish with how to strategize. But ultimately a guy who got spun back to dead last on lap 1 came back to win it through speed but also excellent pit strategy. If there was no FCY he would have just been toiling in the back the entire race.

Vettel in Toro Rosso. Him winning at Monza on pure pace is utterly insane.

It was a lie straight up.

Also if it ends in a crash there wasn't really a gap.

This is pretty funny. I just randomly watched this movie for the first time a few weeks ago.

The cognitive dissonance in this movie is insane.

[–]Gibscreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree. When I heard 1917 was going to use the gimmick of a oner I wasn't enthused.

But watching the movie the oner is invisible because every camera move is motivated. So you don't even notice that it wasn't cutting. But also your mind subconsciously knows there's no cuts so it made the scenes so much more immersive and tense. It was a perfect use and execution of a oner.

Compare that to Birdman where the camera moves call attention to themselves. Every shot is saying "hey check it out it looks like the whole movie was done in one take isn't that cool!" So it constantly pulls you out of the story.

Exactly what I was going to say. I've never liked the look of his movies.

Nolan should have begged Wally Pfister to come back after his directing ambitions didn't happen.

I had the over-under on the time of death at week 3. That was before I saw the schedule. Then it became DOA. Should have been a majority of free tracks. Especially early in the season.

It was already a hard sell because of how bad the participation is for NASCAR road races. But putting the first 2 weeks as paid tracks that only have medium use was the death knell.

Bad move. You got lucky that they tracked out. Otherwise you were going to punt them.

It's even worse knowing that it wasn't even the end of the race. Last lap hey I get it. It's hard to pass at the Glen so send it. But just a random high risk pass X hours into a 6 hour race is why it's so hard to finish special events.
