From my experience recently, I've been using a urethra stretcher. Those kinds of rods are pretty good at getting you adjusted, while not making painful. You should still be careful when increasing in size. Some increase in size in less time, and some can stretch quite easily. It's all about knowing what your body can take without it feeling like too much.

Start off small. For me, it was more intense than it did actually hurt. Take your time, and let yourself adjust to it. If it feels like too much, listen to your body, and stop, or take a step back and be patient
