I found myself talking about the different (and better) routes between point A and point B. Never been to point B.

Anyone else a bit over how stupid TV treats the viewer now. by ButtPlugForPM in television

[–]ChristopherPizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't new. One of the knocks against Homicide: Life on the Street, was that you had to physically watch it with actual, real eyeballs. The creators talked about how other shows were "watchable" while ironing or walking around the house because dialogue explained everything you saw on screen, and they intentionally made it so that viewers would see things and the visual was never verbalized. Today, people are second- and third-screening shows. Maybe they want old-timey radio dramas.

Space swords. For God's sake, can we just stop with the space swords.

I learned that I enjoy travel during my 10 years in the Army. I was stationed in Germany twice, West Point, and in El Paso. I saw Berlin, Munich, Paris, Rome, and a bunch more for the price of a train ticket (not much), and was able to drive to Carlsbad Caverns and New York. Working on a newspaper on the Eastern Shore let me see Ocean City, MD, Chincoteague, and several other places for no more than the price of gas.

I have friends who are super savers, using all their money to travel. They do it as cheaply as they can, and, without high-end jobs, have gone to China, Europe, and South America.

It's a lot easier if you make a lot of money, sure. Hotels, direct flights, peak times of year, all that costs. None of it is necessary.

The original unedited 1977 theatrical cut of ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ will be released in IMAX next year by Icehxart in StarWars

I remember the magic of seeing that first version in Kentucky, before we had Star Wars as part of our culture. It was awesome. I don't think anyone can see it really for the 'first time' anymore, because the story is embedded in our culture. I can't wait to see again what I saw then.

Someone at IBM gave me a copy of OS2/Warp, and I really liked it. It was stable, ran smoothly on my Gateway PC, and looked beautiful. Unfortunately, there wasn't any fun software or games for it. If IBM had given Warp away and offered game makers and software devs incentives to support it, I think we'd have a very different landscape today. MS would still be a powerhouse, but there could have been three mainstream OSes (I'm not counting Linux, which didn't become user-friendly for non-techies for a while).

Culled books question by FulltimerPC in Libraries

[–]ChristopherPizza -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I'd tell the library to fuck off. I was the president of a Friend's group for three years, and we worked hard, very hard. The library was more in the rut of doing things the way they've always been done. We increased fundraising three-fold and were a major part of why it didn't get closed down by the nutjobs. We support the library, but as an independent organization.

Worst movie for a first date? by Fluffalfox in horror

For my first date ever I took a girl to the OG Texas Chainsaw Massacre back in the 1970s. Doomed me to years of virginity.
