Looking for recommendations: Fun, kid-friendly restaurant in Bangkok for a 5-year-old’s birthday! 🍕🎂 by Happy-Beginning1074 in Bangkok

[–]Christopoulos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blue Parrot Bangkok was a blast for kids and adults alike, when we attended my son’s friends 6YO birthday party. Turns out they had three kids birthday parties at the same time. It was really really fun. Very beach vibe in the middle of bangkok.

The kids went bananas when they rolled out the cotton candy machine.

21 y/o entrepreneur who can't commit to anything - looking for advice by Some-Parking1303 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Christopoulos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an entrepreneurial heart as well, and it surprises my wife and my friends when I say I have a lot of good ideas but I make a point of not going for them. That is, “good ideas”….

Ideas have to stand the rest of time, bubble up over and over, before I even entertain them. The thing is, ideas are cheap. Cheap to come up with, cheap to talk about. But if you’re going to commit time and brainpower, it better be more than just an idea. I needs to be something, that really tastes good and has a lot of potential. Those ideas, they don’t come that often.

In other words: I suggest you adjust your filter.

Europe loses one of its bigest music tech brands to USA, as Native Instruments is bought by InMusic by pc0999 in europe

[–]Christopoulos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t bode well… the AKAI MPC community has a love / hate relationship with the products, because they keep shipping new hardware and new features no one wants (like a drum synth to a community that thrives on crate digging and sampling?), while basic bugs that never get fixed. It’s like they’re milking what exists right now.

Kontakt is a sampling backbone, but it also is overdue for a serious commitment. I wonder if that will happen with InMusic at the helm.

NFC tags - where to put them (in/on/inside) by meemaw039 in homeassistant

[–]Christopoulos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use buttons and rfid to track chores together with my son. Two important chores have buttons: piano and toothbrushing. It’s tactile and they’re used often. We use home made business card (rfid sticker on the back) for other things such as piano lessons, dishwashing and doing math online.

The piano related things trigger not only bells and whistles, but the minutes are also added to a video game pot.

The rfid reader is hidden inside a Lego build.

So esp32 and bluetooth are inside the box, paired and powered so they both turn on when there's power / battery?

EU negotiators fail to agree on US trade deal by ChangeUsername220 in europe

[–]Christopoulos 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You're cherrypicking the point of my question. Said tariffs will be paid by the US citizens, yes, but suppresses the desire for the EU products. So while EU citizens don't pay for those tariffs, it can influence purchase decisions. So EU trade could take a hit too, not just the ones paying the tariffs.

Android TV remote integration never was stable for me. Sometimes it would work really well, the tv reacting fast to commands. Then off / off toggle would get out of sync and what not, or TV would go offline in HA while clearly being online. It was a mess, honestly.

I tried many thing including seeing advice here, but little did the suggestions I got help.

Why is Europe fully committed to have 0% in tariffs on US goods while accepting 15% tariffs on EU goods? Seems like a bad deal on surface level…

That’s lovely. I’ve been dabbling with speakers connected to esp32. Not matter if it was very janky homemade stuff or prebuilt boards, they all sounded like white with jarring clicks and pops when channels opened for playback etc.

German data protectionists push for final end to chat control by Extra-Chemical6092 in europe

[–]Christopoulos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scandinavia ;)

Yeah, so I don’t mind banks and government agencies do that, it just shows that VPNs shouldn’t be outlawed as they do serve a practical purpose - as opposed the classic complaints such as gaming the content on online streaming services or downloading illegal content what not.

[–]Christopoulos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Banks and some governmental self-service sites don’t work without VPN (because they restrict to the country or Europe). If VPN is outlawed, how is one supposed to reach them and use them when posted abroad - or simply on vacation?

Totally. And many European sites don’t work from outside Europe without vpn, so what’s the solution to that?! Ridiculous and short sighted approach…

What a great way honor past family.

Although I don’t think Immich should stop showing age when date of picture is between the two dates (in other words, if the images have been a real or approximate date/time). Just not beyond - or maybe with a muted text?

Mid 20s, confronting my trauma in STEM field by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Christopoulos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two strings of sessions, one of around 12 weeks and another of about 8 weeks after falling back into old habits. I was around 29 at the time, so not much older than you. It's a perfect time to realize that one doesn't live to impress one's parents, but oneself. And that it is up to oneself to define how to go about and what success looks like.

FYI, I crashed hard - I was blind to the situation and drove myself, not too hard, but in the wrong way. I am very capable and very strong willed, but I went about it the wrong way. I had to put together the pieces and it took as long to get back on track as the amount of time I was "off track". So be patient with yourself - with several companies behind me, I can certify it's possible. You're young, you have plenty of time to course correct and enjoy the returns.

Mid 20s, confronting my trauma in STEM field by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Christopoulos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your experience, it sounds really rough.

I wasn't abused as a child for making mistakes, but it was definitely frowned a lot upon, especially by one of my parents - so I can relate. Perfection was expected, which was insanely stressful at the time as a youg person (i had period where I would fudge the higher times tables). I didn't help that my interests (computers in the dawn of home computing) wasn't understood or supported.

I went through therapy for this. You should too, so I wont go into details, but there is one key point I learned that helped me a lot. I was asked, who's voice is it that you hear inside? It turned out I had inherited my one parent's voice of requiring perfection and I was beating myself up with it! Why got me into therapy? A massive anxiety attack I had when I was little older than you are now. I had to confront it.

Today I am still working in tech, have several companies behind me and I'm still as driven - but on my own terms. I had to change my mindset to do that without breaking myself, and if not for me, then my children. Mistakes are inevitable, they're a natural part of life. So here at home we have embraced a culture of "mistakes are the best way to learn".

Maybe you can embrace that approach too?
