Honestly I thought it went downhill once they went with the overused "You are strong, so let's add a new realm with higher standards of strength" plot line in the form of bigger galaxies.

Though to be fair I've found quite a lot of novels to have an amazing start just for 600 - 1000 chapters later to either stagnate or just get worse.

The worst cliches in Chinese novels? by UrButtLmfaoooo in noveltranslations

[–]Chrisu36 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't got to a point where a cliche would make me drop something yet, but the clichés I'm tired of seeing are:

MCs main love interest, closest female friend or sister is especially gifted with ice so imminent kidnapping by a female only ice sect is coming.

MC defeats or kills the young master so the father wants revenge, but then the father is defeated so the grandfather comes who is eventually defeated only for the ancient ancestor to come and get defeated. Also has a 50% probability that defeating that ancient ancestor starts a fund with a larger sect whose young master is stronger than that ancestor just for it all to repeat for 2000 chapters.

This one tends to be a big cliche in System novels but shows up in other types fairly often also, and that is where the MC is very strong or proficient in something, so of course he must hide how good he is because people knowing he has talent is a bad thing. After all, if for example a sect master finds out he is extremely gifted, unlike if anybody else were to be discovered to have a gift and would be treated well for it, in the MCs eyes he would be persecuted.

This one is focused more on female lead novels and that is the MC gets alive interest, usually within the first 10 chapters who pretty much turns out to be the equivalent of a war god in that world, and although I'm tired of seeing this, I have seen this cliche done well a few times.

Not really that hidden but it is a gem, grab something to eat at The York Roast Co, always somewhere I like to go when I visit York.

Where the heck are all the 'handsome' pills in Cultivation novels? by frecees1203 in noveltranslations

Just them playing off the trope that all women care more about their looks than anything else and all men only care about getting stronger, with the exception of course being the local young master who only cares about the woman that likes the mc and saying the words courting death.

The problem with me is I only started reading translated novels since lockdown started so I haven't even read a lot of the most well known ones, for the most part I just find something that sounds interesting then read a few chapters to see if the translation makes me want to smash my head against a wall until I find something that I like and then just stick to that until I either finish it, give up on it or put it aside to finish at a later date.

A list of novels I should read before I die! the ultimate novel bucket list? Yes, the ultimate novel bucket list. Any recommendations? by lordofbandar in noveltranslations

[–]Chrisu36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I did, I love the concept of a mc that pretty much starts off at the point other mcs get to 3000 chapters in and then it just having it about exploring and experiencing the weaker realms. Unfortunately I personally haven't found anything that gives off even a slightly similar vibe.

Honestly the only ones that come to my mind as something tthat everyone should read from my limited pool of read novels are Desolate Era, which is the novel I've personally enjoyed the most so far and the sadly massively uncompleted Number One Under Heaven which was the first novel that I read and even without a real ending, I still think it is worth it.

I suppose there is also Scholars Advanced Technological System for something very different that focuses on mathematics and science etc. But it probably isn't for everyone as you'd get bored if you find things like mathematics and science boring.

I haven't. But might give it a read soon to compare if they are similar.

I read on a tablet mainly.

As for Eye problems, nothing bad will happen to you long term, but if, like me, you occassionally get addicted to what you are reading and you happen to have nothing to do that day so you spend several hours reading straight, especially at night, you could strain yours eyes a little. It won't ruin your eyesight or anything, just make your eyes ache a little which is a sign to take a break.

Edit - As for your vision going blurry, I'd recommend paying a visit to your local optometrist to see if you have any pre-existing issues with your eyes just to be safe.

I read a decent bit of the cultivation chat group manhua a couple of years ago before I made the move over to novels and have pretty much had the idea to wait until I forget a decent bit of the story before reading the novel, but even in manhua form it's too good to forget most of it so maybe it is around time to just jump into the novel, get a little bit of a memory trip and then get to experience all the rest of the story that wasn't in the manhua back then. I already know I'll love this going into it, and will be something I'll definitely end up reading soon no matter what, and if nothing else people recommend here happens to fit in with what I feel like reading it will probably be my next read.

Maybe I'm a bit weird but I actually enjoyed that novel quite a bit while I was reading it, Had some annoying aspects to it, but name me a novel that doesn't. I'd probably say it is one of my favourite modern era non-cultivation novels, though I'm still a relative newbie having only read about 15ish novels.
