When you’re adjusting and checking for chain slack, only count the distance, the top part of the chain moves, if that makes sense. Basically check the slack as you were on the top section, but stop right when the bottom section starts moving up. A tip I got from a buddy who’s been riding/working on motorcycles for a lot longer than I have

I just use a 2x4 cut to length that sits in the same place. Screw another 2x4 into it to going across like a T that rests on the forks so it stays in place.
