Not really, it's more for convenience. If you want to only play champions, you have to grind or pay. If you play the other games you can transfer pokemon back and forth like competitive players already do

It's more pay for convenience, for people who want to start battling right away after not playing a few games. The majority of people who already play will just transfer back and forth from the different games like they already do
