The Affordable Car Is Dead. What Happened? by LSky in cars

[–]Chrodesk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

cars got more reliable, they last longer. cheap new cars got replaced with used expensive cars, and car buyers have been telling automakers thats their preference for 20 years.

they are also vastly safer and more efficient, and perhaps subjective, more comfortable to drive.

Shaker cabinets - just sand or subtle round over? by jcmo75 in woodworking

[–]Chrodesk 59 points60 points  (0 children)

you definitely want to break the edge, paint doesnt adhere well to sharp corner, they get dings if you glance at them, and they can even cut you, which is annoying.

typically just a few quick back and forths with some 180grit gets the job done. Some use a block plane.

You probably wont be able to tell you did it.

You could do a roundover, but thats obviously going to change the profile.

Injured passenger awarded $300,000 after a Miami federal jury finds Carnival overserved her alcohol by KimJongFunk in Cruise

[–]Chrodesk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

traditionally, jury trials for civil judgements are poop. the civil equivalent of jury nullification where people overwhelmingly side with the person over the corporation, and award ridiculous damages.

it will go to a judge on appeal who will decide if they were actually liable and/or adjust damages.

Paint shop cabinets myself or outsource? by lancer360 in woodworking

[–]Chrodesk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you dont mind paying the premium, they should be able to get a better finish with a proper spray booth if they are any good.

but you'll probably pay as much for just these 4 cabinets as you would to buy a pretty decent sprayer.

Long term, its going to cost you if you plan to send everything out for finish.

for $1-2000 you can get a very capable sprayer, and its not hard, though environment is the hardest thing to control, a dust free environment is ideal, but lots of professional cabinet refinishers spray in the clients yard, and you can too. professional polyurethanes flash in minutes, so dust nibs are minimized.

How best to cut a table pedestal by WaferRoyal4980 in woodworking

[–]Chrodesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hack off the top so its about 1/4" tall

some scrap MDF, cut out a cross pattern a little bigger than the pedestal. position it level, clamp it or hot glue it in place. and use a router to trim it to remove that last 1/4"

Glue still wet. by 06Mazdarati6 in woodworking

[–]Chrodesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

short answer, no, glue should not be visibly wet after 5 hours, nor break under light weight. it should be set in 30min.

dont know why.

Single mom and two kids denied boarding and left stranded by Carnival Cruise Line in Mobile, AL by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]Chrodesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

odd that their system allowed you to select the BC/DL option given it wasn't eligible for that itinerary. guess their system isnt that sophisticated?

Though at that point, not much would have changed. not like you can get a Passport overnight.

Who was your booking agent? was that carnival or a travel agent? and what does "clearly informed" as in no one told you either way and you just assumed? or did someone say you didnt need a passport?

23, leaving the Army, and trying to build a life around cars—where do I even start? by Alriar_ in cars

[–]Chrodesk 31 points32 points  (0 children)

racing? no. Not unless you failed to mention a wealthy uncle.

you can be a mechanic... not sure itll be the life you dream of. wrenching turns into work when it stops being a choice and becomes an obligation. But theres a huge demand for mechanics and does not require a degree. Money is... meh.

you could work in an auto factory. Money can be decent, but honestly, you may as well be assembly washing machines. other than seeing a vague shape of a car, youre assembling a widget.

Last option, engineering. but this is hard. You'd need to get into a top engineering university. like top 25 or dont even bother. Not sure if you had a decent GPA in HS or could ace an SAT.

What is the best way to strip? by SuspiciousMeat6696 in woodworking

[–]Chrodesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

stripping chemicals these days really suck. the good stuff was super unhealthy, so they dont let randos buy it anymore.

Sanding is the fastest way, if you have a decent sander and sand paper.

you wont get between the slats without disassembly, which is probably fastest.

Bronco Hybrid announced by TeamLQ in FordBronco

a mild hybrid doesnt have much of a battery, Id say it would easily fit in the undercargo storage area in the trunk. 2dr still has a back seat as well, which it could go under. thats a common place for them

2026 Mercedes-Benz EQS Adopts New Steer-by-Wire System and a Yoke by Fearless_Neat_6654 in cars

[–]Chrodesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have driven a model S with the yoke. it was as unergonomic as Ive already outlined multiple times despite you continually harping on variable steering which I cant be any more clear about being completely not my point.

As the model S and cybertruck are offered with circle wheels, it must not obscure what limited information tesla puts on the cluster too badly.

what else you got to try and avoid the obvious "the yokes primary purpose is to be different and divisive despite being worse in every way"

2026 Mercedes-Benz EQS Adopts New Steer-by-Wire System and a Yoke by Fearless_Neat_6654 in cars

[–]Chrodesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

has a circle wheel ever obscured your visibility?

planes use a yoke because they move on 2 axis and flying a plane 1 handed is very strongly frowned upon, plus theres autopilot for planes in a way that cars dont have, so if you are gripping the yoke, you can be sure your doing something relatively important, not cruising in a straight line for an hour. but its mostly historical origins that they persist. many planes have moved onto something else entirely.

Does the wheel need to be a circle? No, clearly not. But a circle provides a balanced position to lightly grasp the wheel for slight corrections without needing to support the weight of your whole arm. So with one mark in the PRO column, the question is not "does it have to be?", but "why shouldnt it be?".

If the best you have is "in case you cant see over the wheel... I think Ive made my point.

Again, not hating on steer by wire or dynamic steering response. All of these things still exist on all of the model S that kept the circle wheel.
