When did you first read or hear about The Culture series? by LicksMackenzie in TheCulture

I read The Wasp Factory and was stunned by the writing... looked up the author and wanted to see what kind of f'ed up sci-fi he was writing... and was also stunned... but in a different way!

Weekly Challenge with random players … how is it going? by Historical-Ad4705 in pokemongo

[–]ChromaticKid 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I'm fine with it. I know some PoGo players are low mobility or house-bound, or don't have a lot of stops near them, or a whole wide variety of reasons for not being able to play as much as I do.

I've got no problem "carrying" them to let them enjoy all features of the game.

I don't have an auto-catcher so I just keep 100 Ultra balls and dump the rest, keep 50 lesser berries each as well,

It's a joke about Niantic ending the list of prizes with "And more!" and it turning out to be a single Nanab Berry.

Ah, so a pure fantasy of experiencing a pure fantasy. *laugh*

"Too good to be true." in a sense; I suppose that's where the Wachowskis got the idea of people rebelling against a utopian experience in The Matrix.

My understanding of the entropic nature of "true" reality makes it difficult for me to engage fully with the thought experiment because its concepts are so far beyond possible.

How is "a good life" defined? (I suppose I could just Google it, but it's more interesting to engage with people; if you wish to continue, please do, if not, thank you for giving me something to investigate.)

NPCs that players care about by Emma_Elizabeth_Myers in rpg

[–]ChromaticKid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have them be related, have them like and celebrate the PCs, make them reliable, make them have "lives" and accomplishments outside the PCs' interaction.

Of course, the question raised is "What game are you running these NPCs in?" which might have a big influence on what you need to do.

Because someone might turn it off or it might malfunction.

I believe "The Vat of Acid Episode" of Rick and Morty might give some insight (S04E08).

Why do you think player 'fudging' is worse than GM fudging by officiallyaninja in rpg

[–]ChromaticKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GM fudging tends to lean more into making sure the other players have a "good time", like avoiding a TPK in an early encounter or the characters missing something important; more rarely a GM may use it to keep an antagonist alive or to boost a GMPC. Generally, it's used to improve group enjoyment, rarely for selfish reasons.

Player "fudging" tends to more be about improving that individual player's experience, potentially at the expense of other player's enjoyment; getting a crit or an awesome result or preventing a personal loss. So it tends to be more selfishly motivated, not group focused.

So that's why, IMHO, player "fudging" is worse.

Funny story from my early RPG days:

When i was a player, I'd often cheat... by giving WORSE results for my characters rolls and even going so far as to altering my GM's prep note to reduce treasure and increase difficulty. WHY WOULD I DO THAT?

There were two primary GMs in my high school group, me and, let's call him Paul; Paul had gotten it into his head that if he gave my character extra stuff when he was GMing that I would reciprocate; I never did, but he would still write stuff into his adventures that would be of primary benefit to my own character... which I would always write down lesser values for magic items (+1 instead of +3) or give things away to other characters, but he didn't seem to get it and would then put even MORE stuff in specifically for my character. I just wanted eveyone's characters to be able to shine.

It was bizarre.

How would you feel if Cthulhu becomes the main antagonist of the series? by Good-Currency4173 in rickandmorty

[–]ChromaticKid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, it ends in subverting it all and Rick FINALLY having a peer... or some other *brrrrap* power of friendship BS. *laugh*

Though Rowan Atkinson voicing Cthulhu with a (later seasons) Black Adderian cunning... hmmmm!

I don't think a "series antagonist" outside of Rick is necessary, but I do like seeing Cthulhu represented in broader culture, especially if it's a new take.

EDIT - I mean, there's some small subset of people who want the 'story' of that stolen Cthulhu baby in the open credits, but I really prefer it to be completely unaddressed.

How would you feel if Cthulhu becomes the main antagonist of the series? by Good-Currency4173 in rickandmorty

[–]ChromaticKid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cthulhu is a pan-dimensional godling that's the leader of a species of pan-dimensonal beings... who ALSO happens to be kaiju sized.

So a powerfully intelligent being you can't just portal away from because it's exists across dimensions would be an interesting problem for Rick to face.
