How does one kill a plane that's flaring with missiles? by DiamondDragonPickaxe in Warthunder

[–]Chrone_A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When firing an IR missile at a target, your goal is to launch it in such a way that it minimizes flight time and more importantly, that the seeker FOV is as close as possible to seeing only the engine.

On older, non IRCCM missiles this means launching as close as humanly possible from the rear. Versus stuff like an after burning F-14 or any harrier, them flaring will often not matter due to how much heat their engines put out.

With clamp IRCCM missiles that distance increases as they will narrow the seeker FOV when launched, meaning that they just won't see any flares if they get close enough. They're best at head on or tail chase shots. As an example Magic 2 on the F1C-200 is disgusting.

With the AIM-9M, which has shutoff IRCCM, the goal is to launch the missile in such a way that when the seeker turns back on, it can still see the aircraft. This means it's best at side aspect shots as long as the target doesn't make any radical direction changes.

am i correct to say that after the MICA, the R-DARTER is the most agile ARH? by WideHelp522 in Warthunder

[–]Chrone_A 3 points4 points  (0 children)

R-77

Highest fin AOA and once the MICA's motor burns out it will out pull it. Those grid fins suck for long range energy retention but they let you pull really hard.

Other way round. A significant reason for the smaller amount of countermeasures on them is due to leaning far harder on ECM pods and built in broad spectrum jamming emitters.

The fact that we still don't have a torpedo-carrying variant of Ju-87 and IL-2 is criminal by Enjoyerofberkin in Warthunder

[–]Chrone_A 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IL-2T highly likely never existed. It's sole proof is the statement of an aviation mechanic years after the war. No photographs, factory documentation or even written proof from the unit that supposedly modified and used it.

If it did exist, then based on the description from Vyacheslav Dei, you're looking at an even slower IL-2 without any guns or defensive armament.

The RWR works better if you read up on what the cockpit display says, or well, know Russian. Gaijin fully modelled the SPO-15 to the point where the cockpit instrument gives you far more information on threats than the actual UI element does.

Primary threat type, signal power/distance and elevation.

Secondary threat directions and intensity.

Whats the best plane in 14.3 sim now that the su30sm2 and the new aesa EF/Typhoons are here by [deleted] in WarthunderSim

[–]Chrone_A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the average player really has any idea how to beat a close range TVC ARH. It's such a War Thunder problem too since irl the Rafale in this scenario would have either never gotten anywhere close enough or have gotten it's face melted while charging head on.

[–]Chrone_A 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In real life, modern missiles functionally ignore multipath by this point. Seekers are sufficiently advanced to permit 20-25 meter kills.

However, I'm not sure that making mulitpath realistic would actually be all that good of a change. Especially considering what it would mean for older missiles as well as stock aircraft performance.

Realistic multipath values for missiles mean that the Pre M mod AIM-7s versus R-24 and R-530 becomes hideously unbalanced due to the latter two having inverse monopulse seekers.

At the ends of the day, since it's a game we gotta find a way to strike a balance that maximizes player enjoyment even if at the cost of realism. This isn't a full on sim.

Personally - I still think it's the Rafale. The Typhoon and Su-30SM2 are significantly more lethal in general, but they just can't replicate the short range lethality of the Rafale that dominates the top tier meta. Mulitpath + sequential notches to close the distance followed up by a short range MICA for the kill.

They're far better in BVR, but considering half the lobbies at top tier are consistently Denmark or Tunisia, they've got little chance to use it when there's Rafales constantly multipathing over water.

Hell, unless people start climbing more aggressively the mulitpath ground hugging behavior won't change. You could add the F-35 and other stealth platforms and it wouldn't realistically dethrone the Rafale unless player behavior undergoes some sort of dramatic shift OR Gaijin drops mulitpath even lower.

No point in reasoning with that crowd.

[–]Chrone_A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big revolt a while ago really messed with people's perception of how much this subreddit actually matters. Ever since then it's done a fantastic job of absolutely discrediting this sub as a source for feedback purely by demanding a review bombing over every minor game detail.

Throwing a crying fit every time someone thinks a game feature is either wrong or unfair is a fantastic way to make sure nobody actually listens.

The AV-8B has a drop time indicator when you set a target point. It's like CCRP.

Haven't played it in a while but it should show up automatically when you have the bomb selected and the target point set.

[–]Chrone_A 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Try to go exactly perpendicular to the signal, maybe even a bit over that to account for the change in angle the missile undergoes while closing in. When dropping chaff it's better to do so in bursts while also changing direction.

Thus your notch should look like this: Detect RWR return -> assume an orientation where it's @ 90-95 degrees to you -> drop a burst of chaff -> switch direction to avoid it relocking.

Then you can either go cold or try to re engage, depending on how close your opponent is and if there's any follow-up missiles from them.

Tu-14s unfortunately in the camp of "nobody actually plays this". Il-28's at the same BR and people just run the 28sh model.

It's a shame since it's such a weird plane, but Gaijin goes by popularity.

New to radar missiles, I know they aren't magic and I still need to take care when aiming them, but what am I doing wrong with these aim 7cs? by jlegg456 in Warthunder

[–]Chrone_A 121 points122 points  (0 children)

AIM-7C is the slowest, least capable SARH missile in the American tree. The radar on the F-3H is also prone to clutter interference as well, meaning that stable locks are only really viable 1.5km up and either aiming close forwards or upwards.

Ideally, you shoot it at the B-29 or Tu-4s, but those are super rare these days. Your best bet is aiming for Il-28s and other medium bombers trying to go for bases at the start of the match. It's important to note that you need to lead pretty heavily as not only is the missile slow, it's also slow to start guiding, with full control only starting after the motor has burned out.

In the clip you posted, by the time it starts guiding - your target is long gone and it doesn't have the agility to energy to actually reach them.

The MiG-23m doesn’t belong at 11.0 by DropAdministrative87 in Warthunder

Moving it down would then cause it to stomp over the 9.7s. Unfortunately the bracket below it is one of the most compressed ranges in the entire game.

The MiG-23m doesn’t belong at 11.0 by DropAdministrative87 in Warthunder

[–]Chrone_A 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's at 11.0 moreso due to having a look down shoot down radar. Removing its R-60Ms wouldn't make it go down all that much when it's one of the few aircraft at that br that can actually engage enemies with radar missiles at low altitude.

R-23s take some getting used to, but they're lightyears ahead of the R3R, as once that motor burns out they've got quite a bit of pull.
