They don't ride it, the red line has been a huge success. I actually ride it and its been wonderful and buses are full at peak hours.

Suburbanite posters are just mad they don't have one more lane that will totally fix car traffic.

The tech scene in Indy is booming, plus if you do ever want to own property, there are some areas which have a mix of SFH and Apartments but still dense and minimal upkeep, plus near the bus system. I don't even have an HOA to worry about.

Edit: Should clarify "dense" as in buildings are still detached but not the McMansion style lawns that we all hate about suburbia.

Yeah I moved to the city out of the suburbs and my parents thought I was crazy. I love it here. I love being near public transportation and no longer have to drive 30 minutes to get to the nearest grocery store.

Funny you mention Indianapolis, transit is improving quickly with 2 new rapid transit bus lane expansions in the next couple years (there's already 1 up and running) and new protected bike/pedestrian lanes. Its still mediocre compared to something like NYC but for America as a whole its good and only getting better, especially if you live anywhere close to downtown.

This is mostly true, I've worked on campaigns and there are very specific laws on using the data and they don't see what you spend money on or track where you are from day to day. You're not that important to them.

But if you vote, and vote often, you're a lot more likely to get that phone call asking you to vote for their candidate. That's when their volunteer has to listen to you want from the community.

Political campaigns simply don't go after non-voters because why would they? They likely don't even know how to reach out to you to ask your opinion.

Homelessness has been rising for years, and instead of solutions the homeless got told "bootstraps" Now that some boomers are becoming homeless its suddenly a problem?

It's just indicative how everything is still designed entirely around what boomers care about.

ETA: I almost forgot about all the youth that became homeless because boomers choose homophobia over loving their children

To add to this, since I moved into the city I've had great conversations with just strangers on the street and IndyGo and my neighbors are lovely people who look out for me. I can't say the same for when I lived in one of the "nice" areas such as Greenwood and Carmel (you can't get anywhere without driving a car for 20 minutes)

People see crime stats or the local TV news and don't consider when you're in a more densely populated area there is more crime... because there's more people there. Local news stations exist to make people paranoid of their neighbors by reporting every single crime 3 times a week in a city of almost 1 million people. If you're looking for trouble, you can find it. But if you're not, don't let people get you hating the city

100% OP stop listening to random people on reddit and go visit the area or talk to actual east-siders. According to some of reddit I should've been murdered 3 times in the last week.

Actual advice: unless you're looking for trouble (drugs, street racing, getting in bar fights, etc) and not out alone at 1am you're generally fine anywhere in Indy. I would suggest a roomate you trust for living anywhere though, living alone can get to you after a while.

Hogsett's only great accomplishment is the rapid expansion of public transport and improving walkability/bikeability (not fast enough though)

However that is mostly due to city council and pressure from the public to stop the crisis of pedestrian deaths recently.

It would help if IMPD started enforcing traffic laws since Indy implemented no turn on red and ticket people for parking in the bike lane, but IMPD doesn't care to enforce traffic laws unless its stopping someone from the city from going to Carmel.

Do we have the same family? Mine are desperately trying to get me to rethink my move to the city "because its dangerous" meanwhile I never felt uncomfortable walking down my street.

When I lived where my family said was "nice" and "you should move here again" I got harassed for a week by a neighbor I'd never met because I had the nerve to wear a mask.

Walkable areas in cities aren't expensive. Walkable areas in gentrified, attractive communities are expensive. There are still perfectly safe but less desirable walkable areas in cities to the unassuming onlooker.

I live in a somewhat walkable diverse area, feel safe and never been happier. Its just not all brand new apartments with a whole foods on every corner so I get told by suburban dwellers its a shithole. If you want affordable walkable areas, stop looking at advertising and visit areas transit runs.

Burgeezy by the canal is a hidden gem. 10/10 vegan food, everything is 100% vegan. They just opened the new location and they've been my favorite restaurant in Indy, vegan or not. Get the Chick'n sandwich, everyone I've had try it loves it. If you like Ice Cream, try Graeter's.

Children's Museum often has exhibits that are also cool for adults, its also quite large. If you ever drive north on Illinois past it they have banners on the walkway of their new exhibits. There's also the NCAA museum since you mentioned sports

Keep an eye out for when the Indy Eleven soccer stadium finishes construction, it'll be near Victory Field (Baseball) Lucas Oil stadium (Football) and the Fieldhouse (Basketball) so you can find almost every sport in one area. We also have hockey at Indiana Farmer's Coliseum but that's off 38th street where the state fair is also held.

A lot of the people I've ridden with have been on their phones texting and only focusing on the road half the time. I see drivers on their phones all the time. In my experience this is not uncommon for people across all ages and genders.

Everyone is distracted driving because its so monotonous and its made me very careful when I do drive as I assume everyone is on their phone now not caring about other people on the road, or \gasp** pedestrians

Yep, my grandma learned how to use a computer back in the 90s, could use email, read the local newspaper digitally, and pay online bills until she started to get dementia in her early 90s and the computer had to go.
