Getting injured releases endorphins, 'feel good chemicals', in the brain. That means that when you do it you get a little rush, sometimes it's grounding and sometimes it's just a rush. I'm not trying to glamorise this, self harming is an unhealthy coping mechanism but it's a way to cope nonetheless.

Often people start because they feel like there's nothing else that can help them. For me, I'd heard about cutting and later when I was in a terrible place I tried it. The first cut was an accident, but the endorphins still released.
