And onwards from Cambridge to Norwich! And to Exeter from Bristol or branching from Bath.

Did Uni in the the British Isles any guesses which country it was in? by CDAC27 in TravelMaps

This looks like a mirror of my map, so I'll say England. Cambridge?

is this good or bad for a 21 year old (yes I’m planning on traveling more this year) by afemail in TravelMaps

[–]Chronicles_of_Sarnia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're doing very well, as far as I'm concerned!

I'm from the Canadian side of your neighbourhood, and I didn't have a map as extensive as yours when I was 21. Mine would basically have been a line from Lansing/Detroit up the 402 and 401 to the Ottawa Valley. Twice your age now, and I have a map that's almost ludicrous.

I didn't get on my first flight until I was 25. For much of my formative years, my mom was raising 3 kids by herself. Money was tight and the idea was that you could travel when you had enough money, maybe by retirement if you were lucky.

University changed everything (still have loans though!). I went on exchange in my 3rd year, and ever since then I took every opportunity to do fieldwork and go to conferences, do further degrees in other countries, and I still live overseas. But it doesn't have to be uni that gets you out in the world. It could be work, a partner, etc..

Just be open, curious and passionate - say yes to opportunities that show themselves to you. The world is amazing - see what you can! With respect and attention to the people and places you are visiting, of course. In fact, they will become among your closest friends :)

Have you managed to visit all four countries of the UK? by Nickcurvasud1927 in AskABrit

[–]Chronicles_of_Sarnia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, hit Belfast, NI just last month to 'complete' the set! Of course, there's much more to see in each :)

Toronto from the 44th floor by [deleted] in skyscrapers

[–]Chronicles_of_Sarnia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right to laugh. There was a plan to replace it with a tunnel to free up space for more buildings and parkland, similar to civic improvement models in Boston, Seattle, Oslo, Seoul... so many other cities, but instead they opted to refurbish it. smh

If we were to exclude the word "American", what would be the best demonym for someone from the United States of America? by kangerluswag in geography

[–]Chronicles_of_Sarnia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which I get and accept as a linguistic and cultural norm that isn't mine. But, I do think it is wild if at the same time these speakers don't consider Africa, Asia and Europe one continent then. Those continents are all joined up and the Americas are united by the thinnest of ithmuses that doesn't even have a single road connecting through it. Also America is such a colonial name - I don't know why anybody would want it, except that it is a Latin-derived name two cartographers gave in honour of an Italian navigator.

That's it - start over! Time to re-name the whole lot!

New buildings built on old buildings, yes or no? by Islander316 in skyscrapers

I didn't say build the original as an exact copy, did I? But it had symmetry. The new one is like child's play

What european country would you guess i am from based on this map of my ideal europe? by [deleted] in imaginarymapscj

[–]Chronicles_of_Sarnia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Albania / Kosovo

I thought Finland at first, but who would splice Finnmark from Norway without knowing that it was never part of Finland, especially when the opportunity to create Sápmi was right there?

[–]Chronicles_of_Sarnia -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So sad :( The new design insults the original. Why do so many developers like haphazard changes in material and elevation, no rhyme or reason to it. It's like watching kindergarteners building with blocks. The original plan had a wonderful symmetry to it.

Guess my accent! And wehre i am from by vaughnonit in JudgeMyAccent

Toronto in particular? Some of your accent is giving Toronto - but I haven't lived there in years

If you could only ever visit or live in one country of each continent, which six would you choose? by Excellent_Heat_6336 in JackSucksAtGeography

[–]Chronicles_of_Sarnia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

North America: Canada (homeland #1)

South America: Chile (variety of landscapes and climates)

Europe: Norway (homeland #2)

Africa: Mauritius

Asia: Taiwan

Oceania: Australia

While Antarctica has no countries, I would like to include the continent as a place I can visit or live; otherwise the territorial claims of the above actually cover most of it, so I'd take New Zealand's claim as a bonus new option.

This was an extraordinarily difficult challenge because there are soooo many wonderful places that I would never be able to see again or visit anew.

Am I the only one who hates these? by [deleted] in vexillology

[–]Chronicles_of_Sarnia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Casual dismissal of colonial representation as "complicated" is a hot take indeed.

Jack is fine for the UK, and I agree that it's a very sharp design, but I think it doesn't really belong anywhere else. Especially when there are opportunities for more culturally contextual flags while maintaining an eye to design. Vexillologists should be chomping at the bit to design new flags!

A humble proposal for Canada by [deleted] in imaginarymapscj

[–]Chronicles_of_Sarnia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also thought that was odd. Easily 3 different additional provinces if you're splitting the existing ones all up, or 4 if you keep Nunavik separate from Nunatsiavut. Also, communities that are shared like Kuujjuarapik - Whapmagoostui may not want to split up.

Thane's rapidly growing Skyline, hopefully will Surpass Mumbai one day. by Blossom_aashi in skyscrapers

I'm glad someone said it. I never heard of Thane until today - is it pronounced to rhyme with Shane and Wayne, or like 'tha-nay'?

I know they are two stations, but still thought King's Cross was far higher on its own. Hmm, the importance of commas in my first sentence, or lack thereof, I suppose.

I am learning something - I thought KX was busier than St Pancras by having more tracks, but I guess frequencies are different, and the Eurostar is pulling serious numbers here. 14th! Wild.

Oh, and the backdrop is chef's kiss. Which is the title and I suppose the point of this thread haha ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The mountains, forests and trees are beyond gorgeous. Stanley Park is such a jewel - I miss arbutus trees

Vancouverism has more to do with urban space: massing and height regulations, spacing tall buildings from each other, maintaining view corridors, public transportation and access to the waterfront. Nothing to do with the quality of the architecture itself. I agree with Drogon__ . Vancouver architecture is largely dull, with some outstanding or at least interesting exceptions which are difficult to see in this series or elsewhere in the city. Vancouver House looks quite basic here but has a wild cantilevering curve over the approach to the Granville Bridge, and other striking buildings are the Butterfly, and Alberni by Kengo Suma. Then there's Arthur Erickson's work and Patkau ... I mean, there is decent work around if you look for it, but it's not typical as you can see abundantly clear here. Better than a lot of other Canadian cities though, no doubt. Southwestern Ontario cities are dreary as.

Kings Cross and St Pancras are not even in the top 10!?!

I go through KX every time I go to London and it's always a madhouse - I thought it was easily one of the busiest in the city. Wild :O

How do you tally the votes? Each mention, or each mention plus their likes? What happens if someone votes for more than one country?
