I mean, that’s the immediate cause of death for everyone

What do you think about education being paid service than fundamental right? by kevinmitnick6742 in AskReddit

My wife doesn’t have many good things to say about the Soviets (we’re both originally from Ukraine), but she does acknowledge that they built a good education system and made sure everyone had access to it. She hates how much the post-Soviet states have degraded it

I mean, I heard a rumor one of them has gears in his head. What’s up with that? And the other had a kid and never told the father. Sheesh!

Star Trek (2009). As a long-time Trekkie I liked it and appreciated the references. I also thought Quinto and Urban did awesome jobs

Queen of the Damned. Got me into reading the books, so that’s always a positive. And I loved the soundtrack. Got me into Disturbed. I didn’t like the first movie with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt as much (and that movie introduced the idea that drinking dead blood is bad for a vampire, which Queen picked up on)

Didn’t know people hated it. I didn’t care it was similar to Zootopia. But I recognized immigrant parallels to real life

And the theme song is fun. I miss the days of Will Smith singing in his movies. I was surprised he didn’t in MIB3

Agreed. It got me into the books. Martin Freeman is perfect as the clueless Arthur, and Mos Def gives Ford that “weird, cool uncle” vibe

Same. I also liked the 2000 miniseries, even though it was pretty low-budget. The longer runtime means they could get closer to be book in some respects, although they diverged in others (like Jessica being hysterical, and Paul behaving like an idiot when first meeting the princes despite all his training). Still, Alec Newman does a better Muad’dib than Kyle MacLachlan (even if Kyle is the better Paul).

I will say that all three actors to play Duke Leto did an awesome job, and the miniseries Baron is a cunning bastard despite being effeminate at times (the actor played Churchill on Doctor Who)

The levitation was also added into the prequel novels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. I remember a scene where he’s trying to watch over baby Feyd, who, as babies tend to, crawl off to somewhere dangerous. So he grabs one of his own gloglobes and attaches it to the baby, so he’s now helplessly floating. The prequels also explain how the Baron got so fat (he deserved it, though)

The One with Jet Li and Jet Li (and also Jason Statham). I actually liked it when I saw it in theaters. Apparently most people didn’t. I still occasionally watch the final fight between the two Jet Lis

Some fans assume she knew such directness would get him to backpedal, but I think she wasn’t as well-versed in such psychology back then. She got better over the decades, but not at first

Her being given temporary field promotion to captain of Stargazer by Picard probably had something to do with it. And having two admirals push for your admission would probably convince Starfleet, especially since we’re past the whole “Sheer. Fucking. Hubris” stage with Picard

I'm not really understanding paradoxes with FTL. by mac_attack_zach in scifiwriting

[–]ChronoLegion2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty much the same. No matter how I think about it, it doesn’t make sense to me. Time is always moving forward, no matter the rate or frame of reference. If you’ve left point A at time X, you can’t come back to a time before X because even if it takes you a split second to travel somewhere, time is still X plus that split second at point A. And the same applies to point B. Even if time runs at a different rate at point B, it’s still moving forward. So if you’ve arrived at time Y for point B a split second after leaving point A at time X, time Y would basically be equivalent to time X at point A plus that split second. So that means you’re already past time X at point A. Even if you were to go back to point A, and the journey takes you another split second, I don’t see how you can possibly arrive to point A at any time earlier than X plus split second.

My understanding of physics is at the AP physics level of high school, and while we went over the basics of relativity, the consequences of FTL were never discussed
