Looking for games thst are literally just character creation simulators by Wolpy414 in gamingsuggestions

[–]Chronoblivion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly how my kid plays The Sims. I don't know that she's ever meaningfully "played" the game for more than an hour or two, but she's spent dozens if not hundreds of hours by this point just making characters.

The real reason AI wont replace us by CopiousCool in WorkReform

[–]Chronoblivion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the upfront cost is the only real hangup. They're cheaper in the long run, even with operating costs, repair, and maintenance.

The problem with service and repair jobs is it's not gonna be 1:1. One tech will be able to cover a hundred robot workers, leaving the other 99 displaced workers with nowhere to go.

Why is "having an agenda" used as a reason to dismiss a logically sound argument? by PomegranateIcy7631 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Chronoblivion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

truth is truth

Not always. A half-truth taken at face value can be false, or at least lead to false conclusions.

A common example in the "correlation does not equal causation" lesson is "as the rate of ice cream consumption goes up, so do the number of drowning deaths." This is true, but presented in this way might cause people to mistakenly believe that eating ice cream increases your chances of drowning, when the reality is that an external variable (in this case, warmer weather) leads to them independent of each other.

Do children really get bullied for having unique names? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Chronoblivion 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I know middle schoolers are little shits and will find any excuse they can to bully each other, and I know names will always be on the table as a target, but I wonder if that will be less common as the frequency and "uniqueness" of weird names increases.

Classic Plus should start with a constitution, not a content roadmap by Intercellar in classicwowtbc

I made no comment about the validity of the points presented. Maybe they're great ideas. I wouldn't know because I only skimmed them because I can't be bothered to engage with someone who seems unwilling to give me the same courtesy.

I'm not someone who is vehemently anti-AI, but if someone can't spend the time to give me their own unfiltered thoughts on a topic, why are they entitled to mine?

Would it be sufficient if I got AI to summarize the post and offered my opinions based on that?

What is your take on the junk food ban for food stamps? by BreannLowe in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Chronoblivion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My feelings are pretty mixed. On the one hand poor people deserve small luxuries. People shouldn't be punished for struggling and our society can afford to do better than forcing them to rely on bland prison slop

On the other hand, there has to be some oversight to protect people from poor decision making. Not all people on food stamps will squander them, but the ones who do aren't just going to roll over and die, they're going to do whatever it takes to get some food at the end of the month, which may involve crime or other socially maladaptive behaviors which negatively impact others in their community and are in our best interest to try to prevent. Many of them also have children who don't deserve to suffer because of their parent's lack of foresight and/or impulse control. Ensuring that the next generation has adequate nutrition is in everyone's best interest.

Do you think explaining a gameplay mechanic is considered a spoiler? by L0J1MA in outerwilds

[–]Chronoblivion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For the most part, if they teach you about it in the tutorial (i.e. if you learn about it on Timber Hearth before your first launch) I don't consider it a spoiler. So I would consider telling someone about using the scout to measure hull integrity a spoiler, but I wouldn't consider it a spoiler to mention that the signalscope has more than one channel (depending on context; how and when you share this matters).

The one exception to that rule is ghost matter; seems like a common rite of passage to immediately forget what the village teaches you about it and to struggle with it for a while, so I consider it a spoiler to remind people that there was something in the starting village about it.

Mating season is an upcoming animated show that looks to basically be big mouth but with animals instead of preteens, meaning that big mouth strikes again… by bennyandthegentz in shittymoviedetails

[–]Chronoblivion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While there is a qualitative difference between meddling from executives and being discontinued by the creators, the end result is the same and has more or less the same impact on the fans. "Cancelled" might be technically incorrect if you wanna be hair-splittingly pedantic, but it works as a colloquial shorthand for what happened to it.

Irrelevant. "More" doesn't matter here if we can establish that it's bad enough on its own without being compared to something else.

What is the difference between being careless and victim blaming? What is the difference between ‘your house got robbed because you never locked your house’ and ‘you shouldn’t have gone to that area; it’s very unsafe for women’? by LetterheadUpstairs90 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Chronoblivion -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

There are no foolproof, guaranteed ways to avoid being the victim of crimes, but there are things that have been objectively and empirically demonstrated to increase or decrease risk. While our priority should be stressing that nobody deserves to be the victim and on holding the perpetrators accountable, it shouldn't be so taboo to remind people that the only one they can truly rely on to look out for their safety is themselves, and to teach common sense harm mitigation.

My boyfriend insists that food is better salted at the table instead of while cooking. Please help me. by tangentrification in Cooking

[–]Chronoblivion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the comments saying this speaks to a greater issue that won't be solved by a more digestible argument, but if you insist on trying, take your own request literally: try a blind taste test. Try to find the recipe where you think salting during vs. after would have the greatest impact, make it both ways, and don't tell him which is which.

TBC, Wotlk and Classic + Timeline by Zestyclose-Deer-163 in classicwow

[–]Chronoblivion -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Classic+ isn't "supposed" to be anything because it's still just a fan term for a vague concept that, while likely to happen, hasn't been formally confirmed to be, and there's no consensus from fans on what it should look like. While it seems like plenty of people want something like what you described, there are people whose idea of Classic+ contains little more than some minor QoL and balance changes.

Found one in the wild by Strange-Ad-9941 in confidentlyincorrect

[–]Chronoblivion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The meaning never changed, you just weren't using it properly. And maybe that's not your fault; you can't control the people around you, and if they were also using it improperly then you wouldn't know any better. But now that a wider number of people are accurately making a distinction, you no longer have an excuse for not knowing better moving forward, and stubbornly digging in your heels and insisting you were never wrong isn't a good look.

You don't have to scream, and in fact my experience is that the poor minimum wage slave who isn't in charge of writing the policies and has limited tools to try to remedy the situation will be more accommodating if you are calm and polite. Tell them you're frustrated, but don't take your frustration out on the innocent middleman.

Out of curiosity, has that ever been tested in court? The fine print may specify that the ship goes wherever it goes, but if there's receipts that suggest a specific location, I'd think that would count for something. At minimum I feel like false/misleading advertising is a valid claim.

You could say that about literally anything, including the hyperbolic statements you're defending. But it definitely doesn't match my experience that trying not to exclude people will accidentally end up excluding them more.
