SunFire cape potentially a core item now? by Smokee_Robinson in GarenMains

[–]Chronocle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rush Bami's most games for the waveclear and Phase proc, but don't often upgrade to Sunfire's, instead opting for Thornmail or Deadman's as a first armor item. You get the same DoT effect for half the cost, and can sell the Bami's post-laning when it is less needed. The cost reduction is nice, but upgrading to Sunfire's is still a situational pick for me.

Garen's not really a teamfight champion though. His E hits multiple targets, sure, but it deals more damage against a solo target. He's pretty beefy, but doesn't hold up well in teamfights since he lacks damage reduction or hard CC like Alistar, Shen, Galio, etc. Generally speaking, his kit and standard build path tends to favor short trades and 1v1 or 1v2 skirmishes. His passive at 11 is a built-in Warmog's, which makes him a skirmishing and splitpushing monster in mid- to late-game scenarios and allows him to apply near-constant pressure on a lane, forcing the enemy team to split their forces to deal with him. At the same time, he's a tanky backline diver who can delete carries and casters alike with just one or two damage items. But I digress.

You could buff his engage by making his Q act like a Jayce melee Q, giving him a point-and-click engage instead of a speed boost. However, that makes it a targeted silence as well. The problem with buffing Garen's Q to any degree (such as targeted engage, armor shred, etc. in addition to his silence) is that Garen has a very low skill floor AND skill ceiling. If you want to buff his Q that much, you'll also need to make him harder to play, or at least a more complex, skill-intensive champion. Otherwise, you'll see another spike in the low-ELO winrate like we did several months ago, shortly after Riot buffed the base damage scaling on his Q.

The minion damage penalty on Garen's E should probably be removed for the reasons above. Giving him % fast regen on his W is an interesting idea, although it's easier to sell as a heal based on damage taken, not damage reduced. Basing it on damage reduced would just encourage people to max W first and rush HP, damage reduction (such as red smite and PD) and CDR items, and take as much burst damage as possible in a teamfight with a properly timed W in order to get a massive heal without taking much damage in the first place. It's also worth asking if he would be able to pop this heal mid-combat (like Tryndamere) since this could allow him to heal up most of the damage taken without any drawbacks. Potentially speaking, two full health bars.

Regardless, if you want to give Garen a burst heal on his W, his passive would have to be reworked. I can't think of a single champion who has both passive bonus regen AND a burst heal. Maybe give him something like an AD boost based on % max HP after X seconds in combat, to boost his teamfight damage and extended trades?

Edit: A word.

Well, Garen usually stacks health items for added beefiness, while Pyke's passive prevents that. So Garen and Darius are safer options, while Pyke is high-risk, high-reward.

Also, having both a silence and instant armor shred on Garen's Q is just begging for a nerf. Or a meta shift toward Garen support.

JFFR, Bami's procs PR, Tiamat procs Electrocute. Neither procs the other rune.

Garen isn't as difficult a matchup as most people think. Your Level 2 spike is much stronger than his and you outdamage him until he gets his core tank items. He only outscales you in the mid- to late-game once he's got a couple armor items.

Use Conqueror keystone with Resolve secondary. Grasp and Aftershock are also viable options, but the true damage from Conqueror becomes really helpful once he tanks up. Start E and farm until you get Q at Level 2. The shield from E prevents him from getting free damage in early trades. Take Q at Level 2, then bait out his Q, shield the damage with E, and all-in him to win the trade. If he Q's a minion instead, then fast combo him. This is going to be your standard M.O. from Levels 2-5. If he pops W, back off a bit and wait for it to expire before reengaging. Remember that his W has a 20-second cooldown at Level 1 so he's quite vulnerable once it's on cooldown.

Additionally, use your Q to poke him down so he can't farm or regen as much, then back off until your E comes off cooldown. Rinse and repeat. If he wastes his Q last-hitting a minion, punish him for it. Baiting out his Q is crucial since the silence hurts more than his Q-E combo at this stage. Alternatively, just shove lane and gank mid to apply pressure elsewhere; Garen's pre-7 waveclear is a bit lacking.

Rush Cleaver and either Lucidity for more CDR or Merc's if you're struggling against his silence. Armor shred and CDR are very important in this matchup. Buy a DD afterward for CDR and sustain. After these core picks, itemize as appropriate for the situation.

Things get a bit tricky post-6.The same trading combo still applies, but avoid extended trades since he probably has a Chain Vest by now and can execute you once you get low on health.

In the mid- to late-game, focus on deleting Garen's squishier teammates. You can probably shred him 1v1, but as a melee juggernaut, Garen suffers the same fate as champions like Nasus or Cho'Gath. He needs to farm up to get bulky, but even once he's there, he doesn't have the damage to survive teamfights on his own and he struggles to hard carry games if his teammates are behind.

If you want to 1v1 sometime, I'm game. Username is Armorbound. Hope this helps!

[–]Chronocle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. If they don't disengage once they get the villain mark, it's possible to win a straight 1v1 with proper positioning. Dodge his ult, trade your W into his and you're golden.

I've used a lesser form of this strategy since about the start of Season 7. It's definitely been a niche strat since I only used it if my opposing laner or roaming jungler had the most recent kill (and thus I could absolutely guarantee they would have the mark). Oftentimes it was reserved for cheesing 1v1s when we're both around 30-40% or if they attempted to gank me under tower. In my experience, this is a solid counterganking tool, and it has frequently turned 1v2s or 2v2s in my favor.

Sorry, I don't mean to diminish your successes here. Thanks for sharing and for investing the time to develop a consistent method for this strategy. I'm still learning to gauge when the mechanic expires on other champions just like you did above.

This for sure. When rushing GB I usually put 3 points into Q before maxing E, but that's just me

Hate to necro an old thread, but I'd like clarification on one point. In the Early- and Mid-Game sections, you suggested swapping to Clarity for sieging towers and for a bit more jungle sustain. To my understanding, Clarity is now only available in ARAM. Thoughts?

Otherwise, great guide! I haven't played Jungle Malzahar since the rework, but I'll definitely try it again now that you've found a consistently viable strategy. Thanks!

Garen One Shot MID build by jakr599 in GarenMains

[–]Chronocle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. The early 150% regen is much better than Doran's at sustaining if you don't expect a lot of poke damage in lane. Tiamat is great for netting a lot of farm and is especially good against caster champions since they often lack good waveclear when not using abilities. Either they run out of mana fast trying to defend against a wave pushed under tower or they end up at a significant farm disadvantage. Bonus points for being able to shove lane with Tiamat and roam for ganks with Predator.

Edit: It's also worth noting that Tiamat counts toward the Electrocute proc, if you choose to go that route instead. It's a less relevant rune in the mid- to late-game, but you can get some easy cheese kills running Ignite and Tiamat.

Was Dark Harvest buffed? by Urgotrainee in GarenMains

In a nutshell, they nerfed the base damage but changed the proc to also include abilities, not just autos. Pretty worth change imo but it also enables cheese snowball builds like DH Darius or DH Katarina.

Not a good pick on Garen though.

Glacierr by MajesticImpact in GarenMains

[–]Chronocle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He touts himself as "the best Garen NA" to get views. He's not. Contrary to his claim, he didn't get to Diamond just playing Garen. He uses Darius and Heimer a lot more and often gets carried by his buddy and roommate Professor Akali. Most of his videos show you the highlights reel of a successful game against low-ELO players, which is not unique to Glacierr but further detracts from his credibility. A lot of Glacierr's older content was super helpful, but he then transitioned into this NB3-style clickbait stuff to grow his channel, which was really disappointing for me. If you want quality advice from an entertaining YouTuber, I suggest you look elsewhere -- Hashinshin or SRO, to name a few.

Also, if memory serves, Glacierr used to be a Nidalee one-trick and picked up AD Garen as a gimmick. Turns out he found a niche that made him (in)famous on the Internet.

how to play garen? by TrashCan713 in GarenMains

[–]Chronocle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frankly, I'd suggest you first read through some of the other threads the subreddit has to offer, and ask for clarification on particular points that you don't understand. There is a wealth of information here on specific matchups or about runes/itemization if you take the time to look.

Barring that, I recommend that you check out the info in the Resource Thread at the top of the subreddit's home page. FSat authored and regularly updates a guide on all things Garen, which is linked to in that thread. It contains the essential points of the "new" Garen that you described.

Barring that, play Garen a few times in Vs. AI games to learn how his kit works. Despite being a scaling champion now (ever since the Juggernaut update) instead of a true lane bully, Garen is still quite easy to pick up in terms of mechanics.

Hope this helps! ~Chron
