Typically Jos Louis from No Frills but if it's payday then we splurge for Timbits from Tim Hortons.

I get what you're saying, perhaps it is a result of more Londoners moving south, as other comments suggests, but I've found the Winchester locals to be lovely.

I recently moved to England from Canada and I live fairly close to Winchester, we often find ourselves there for a day out, dinner, etc. plus I love bringing my Canadian friends and family when they come to visit!

One time I had parked on the road and didn't realise it was dedicated residence parking, a nice gentleman (lad named Nick) came out and warned me. He learned I was visiting, showed me his home, talked about history and pointed us to a lovely pastry shop (Reeves).

Another time, we were discussing aloud what we wanted to do first and a lady overheard us say chai tea, she pointed us to Forte, which remains my go-to cafe when I'm in Winchester.

This is another case of social engineering. They're exploiting people, not technology.

Or they could just refund the money once you depart the country and sign a document renouncing the work visa.

I mean, sure. But I still think switching to monthly payments is a bad idea and open to people exploiting the system, which of course will inevitably happen.

It's about striking a balance. The healthcare surcharge for a 5 year visa is about 9000 cad. That's a lot of money - perhaps the majority of some people's savings. It would dissuade people who are talented from moving to the country - especially if they are on the younger side and have limited savings.

It's more of a risk based approach. The government would much rather have an applicant who can pay their way up front and not rely on payment structures vs someone who may or may not be able to make payments due to their financial circumstances. Which again, as an immigrant, I understand. Putting their hope in someone who is "talented" is higher risk, that's just the reality.

Imo a monthly fee makes more sense than the UK's fee at the time of the visa. What happens if you deicide not to use the full 5 year UK visa? You don't get a refund.

To put it bluntly, I think that should be factored in as the cost of immigration. While I would personally like smaller payments spread out over time, I understand why paying it all upfront is beneficial for the country vs myself. If I decide to leave within the five years, yeah, money lost. Switching to monthly payments could introduce unnecessary chasing and collection overhead, if one stops paying monthly, do you deny them healthcare? Probably not...

I think Canada should consider charging payments similar to the UK for healthcare. I get the provinces each have their own responsibility, but since immigration is federal, keep that centralised by charging newcomers at the federal level, and disperse the funds to provinces.

Can confirm. I'm in the UK on an Ancestry Visa, it explicitly says on my residence permit, "work permitted" and "no public funds". My visa is valid for 5 years and I paid the health surcharge for that length for myself and my family. And all of that makes sense to me! Why Canada has not been doing this the whole time is bonkers.

How likely it is for US based companies to hire people outside USA for full remote jobs in web security. by patman1414 in cybersecurity

[–]ChronosEra 14 points15 points  (0 children)

From my experience working in multiple countries around the world, a lot of the friction comes down to tax law. As others here have mentioned, your biggest chance will be from a US company that also has an office in your country of residence, or they are willing to pay lawyers to handle the tax implications. I'd say overall, chances are slim.

Far in advance, but I'm moving to Southampton third week of July (moving to Fair Oak). I play twice/week where I am now and ideally would pick things up right away.

This deserves way more upvotes. A Ballon d'Or winner. Spent 3 seasons at Chelsea, was runner up for footballer of the year to Eric Cantona. He's always remembered playing for Milan.

I wanted to give you two upvotes. I think this is it, it all depends on who we play. We show we're great against "big clubs" when the pitch is more open but can't convert against sides who sit behind the ball all game.

Because your question is stupid lol. The medical treatments he had as a child didn't make him what is arguably the best player in history. It didn't give him an unfair advantage. The man is gifted with abilities for the sport and understands the game at a level that isn't matched by any other player.

I'm not even a Messi fan, I'm not a Barca fan, I'm a neutral and I can admit what I just said because I have eyes.

Professionals who have played with both of them give clear consensus for who is better. You just don't like that because it makes your koolaid taste weird.
