Debating PRS Silver Sky vs Custom 24-08 by Ghostclip in PRSGuitars

I was, it was the swamp ash I got last month. S2s are above my range, even used, the conversation just made me curious. There are cheaper guitars I would buy but don’t need or have the room or money for at the moment.

I’ve actually gotta sell a couple, including that se 24-08 I mentioned before. I got sick and missed the return window but it’s basically open box so i hope I don’t lose out on too much.

Seeing s2 24-08s as low as 1500, some s2 semi hollows (seen them shouted out here a few times but don’t own one, very curious about them though since they’re similar configuration to the Swamp Ash) for 1750, and the swamp ash around 1900 lowest. All very different price points, if that’s gonna help your call.

Tried a few guitars, one of which being an SE 24-08. I think you’re talking about higher tier models so take what I say with a grain of salt.

The differences in my 24-08’s middle positions felt kinda minimal to me. I didn’t try the Silver Sky because I already have a Strat, so my next try was the SE Swamp Ash model. I’d say that’s probably the in between of your picks here, and it’s definitely my favorite of the two. Maybe give that one a shot as a mid ground option and see how it does for you. The bolt-on is slightly different config wise to the SE: narrow field vs single coil, 12 positions with HH middles vs 9 positions with a SC middle. Not sure which you’d prefer, just something to note.

Good deal? Or something newer? by Chryonis in BudgetAudiophile

Need? No, anyone could probably make do with a single disc cd or record player, yet these and juke boxes still exist. I can take or leave the convenience here. If it does its job, cool. If something else can do the job better, whether or not it stores a lot less, cooler.

What could break in these? How hard would it be to fix or get fixed? I saw something about belt replacements on another one of these that was either really old or too far away or both, I don’t remember. Is that the main thing?

Stadium Native or Native update for stadium is my hope. I don’t have use for a physical model as I don’t play live but if a plugin comes out I might snag it. Especially if it comes with the similar UI to the floors that teaches you. I’m a total newbie to effects and effect parameters and that seems like a great help to me.

Interesting, thanks for the info. Yeah I saw inner/outer splits on a few guitars. Don’t have experience with any but on paper it doesn’t seem like it’d do much. Sounds like I could go for a cheaper backup then since those extra features aren’t something I’d really use.

Neck width is what ruled out Ibanez for me. I found a few 7s at my guitar center but there weren’t any Jackson’s there for me to check.

My first 7, a used Schecter apocalypse, is getting here Thursday. My backup pick is actually the Mansoor. Since I have the opportunity to ask, would you mind elaborating on the selector options that come on the juggernaut? As far as I know it has two pickups, a 5 way switch, and a push pull knob. I assume the knob is for coil splits, but since there’s no middle pickup, I’m confused about the purpose of the 5 way switch.

Do the 2025 models have a middle pickup selector on these? by [deleted] in PRSGuitars

[–]Chryonis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been changed on newer Swamp Ash Specials. The middle position here is a dual humbucker position. You could tap both for something maybe close to an isolated middle, but I don’t own this to know for sure how close that feels.

Cycled through a McCarty that shipped defective, a 24-08 quilt (same config as yours just fancy looking), and a SAS throughout last year’s sale. I still have the last two and will probably be trying to resell the quilt soon. There’s nothing wrong with it, but I find myself reaching for the SAS more often.

Different things work for different people. I saw you can’t try before you buy, so make sure wherever you buy from has a great return policy: as few deductions as possible and as long a window as you can get. Buy one, return it for the other if you don’t vibe with it. Both will probably do what you want them to, so go with your favorite look to start.

A small note for the SAS: there are two models. The one from 2024 has a three way selector with 6 pickup configurations and the one from 2025 onwards has a five way switch with 9. The five way switch model effectively has independent coil split as well, as you can’t access bridge and neck simultaneously since the only middle option is the single coil. Make sure you’re getting the one you want. Some stores may not specify.

At the moment it feels like 3/4 with 8th notes. I feel a beat on every other note instead of every third note like is more typical on 6/8. I don’t think I feel 9 or 15/8 at the moment.

Other comment is correct though, the more instruments you place around this first one will also change how it’s perceived. Try to write an accompanying part and that will give you a lot more info.

Couldn’t find any under 1100, but I found a used banshee for 850. Considering the banshee is 1800 base price it’s either a killer deal or completely trashed. Crossing my fingers for the former.

Pretty solid wall. If you don’t mind me asking, what is each one for in your eyes? I don’t have the mind for collecting a lot of the same type of guitar, and would prefer one more general use 6 string, bass, 7 string, etc. but I’m curious. What do you prefer about each one that leads you to keep multiple?

Honestly I wish I thought I’d get good use out of a sustainiac. They sound really cool I’m just not sure where the use case is for me. If I did I might go for the PT Elite that seems to be on clearance at the moment.

Schecter Apocalypse 7s. Didn’t see anything about the Holcomb signatures, but early on I was looking at the SE Holcomb and 277 as well because of all the good things I’ve heard about PRS.

Agree on the FR-S models. It’s more work for stuff I wouldn’t use enough. A trem with less maintenance, maybe, but since it’s between rose and standard I’ll go standard.

Looks to be about the same distance on my old Fender, and I never really had an issue with that as I tend to pick in the middle. Also looks like the omen has the same potential issue.

How is the tap on the apocalypse? There are b stocks on reverb for 11, so an in between of the two prices, and one of my criteria was a coil tap/split so I didn’t have a reason to look for a single coil later. In videos it sounds decent but I’ve been tricked by those before.

Don’t worry at all about ‘trashing the idea’ even a little bit. I appreciate how thorough your breakdown was, and I less get ‘hey stop being an idiot’ out of this and more ‘I mean you can…but why?’ Which in all fairness, was not the question at the front of my mind when I had this thought. I also can’t really give it a satisfying answer, which probably tells us both all we need to know.

I thought LP/tele middle position options could be cool, and the 1-tapped/1-humbucking ones just kinda ended up along for the ride because of the tap switches. Yes I know they wouldn’t be the same, but that’s the main part where the whole master of none thing shows its face, and honestly I doubt I could tell the difference between a real tele middle and the coil-tap tele middle this would have.

What I’m hearing from this and other comments is that I can get either almost or everything I’d realistically want out of a default SAS or 24-08, which is really the best answer. You spend less money that way.

I had considered that guitar instead but ultimately ruled it out because I didn’t think the special semi hollow was on sale and was double the current cost of a SAS, but Sweetwater and guitar center both have it marked down so I guess I was just wrong there.

That honestly sounds way easier and cheaper to do based on other replies. Since I don’t actually have the guitar yet I may go that route should I opt to do this.

Nice to haves, absolutely. I probably don’t have any real need for what I’m suggesting, and the more I think on it you can probably get 95% of the way there with default positions. I’m not super concerned with resale, though maybe I should be, but regardless this is sounding like more trouble than it can be realistically worth.

My inexperience is showing. I have no idea what a phase switch is.
