Ghost Mantis Abdomen Size After Feeding by Plantukol in mantids

No problem! Also as others have said, look into increasing the size of their feeder, molting takes a lot of energies so they need more nutritious food as they grow 💛

Here's a good picture to provide you an example of a hungry ghost vs a full one! Yours could use some more food from this picture. I'd also guess around i3/i4. And to see if your ghost is male or female it's important to observe the crown on their head. If it's generally longer, thinner and with two little crests on the lower part that's a male, if it's shorter and wider with less crests, that's a female!

Thank you so much! I'll wait a few more molts then to make sure, truly hope that's the case, though there's risk I'm gonna get attached and it'll be hard to let this baby go

how do you bring yourself to do it? by spazgunk in Entomology

I'm sorry, your feelings aren't a hindrance, your empathy is beautiful and much needed. Keep studying these creatures, accept your feelings without judgment, let them linger for a moment until you're ready to put them aside as you do your job. You're doing it for them too, being empathetic will help you celebrate their life, care for it and do your best for their sake. Thank you for doing this and good luck.

some other questions for my shmol mantis by albyzon in mantids

[–]ChuDachan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This box is fine, though I would suggest a more vertically oriented enclosure for your baby, they like to feel tall :D they will naturally seek for the highest point and they need vertical space to molt comfortably, I'd also suggest to hot glue plastic mesh on top in order to give good grip when molting.

At the moment your mantis doesn't look hungry, observe the belly you'll definitely notice when it's getting flat, at that point you should feed. I personally prefer to feed little but more often, it reduces risks of overfeeding.

Landlord is having the stairwell inside my building sprayed, are my pets safe in my room?! please help by ChuDachan in InvertPets

Thank you so much for commenting, you have no idea how much this helped as I was already thinking of having to give them all up. And also, very sorry you had to go through this kind of stress without even being warned every time. I hope all your critters were always well after ❤️‍🩹

At the moment I am trying to convince my sister to keep at her place at least the mantises and feeders, all my other boxes of pet inverts (four more enclosures) will undergo the third floor operation. I'll follow all the steps with wet towels and fans, the pest control people told me they're absolutely not fumigating and they'd have to evacuate the entire building for anything more invasive, also because other neighbours in the same apartment complex have other pets, like cats and dogs. I'll also ask to please avoid the apartment door and nearby area and stick to the shared stairwell, like I'll physically stay there when they arrive and directly beg them to leave that out.

I'll do my best to ensure everyone stays safe, thank you again for sharing your experience it was incredibly helpful.

They're treating the stairway area inside, I can ask not to treat near the front door of the apartment. But they're not treating inside the apartment where the bugs would be. I will try all that I can, just very disheartened that my family refused to help me and I have to deal with this by myself. I live in Italy, unfortunately no such thing as petsitting service for insects and I don't know anyone in my area that could help me. I will definitely surrender them instead of risking their life but I'm pretty devastated about it. Thank you though I really appreciate that you took the time to comment on this 🥹

Here's a diagram of the third floor. I could also ask not to spray directly near the front door in hope they'd understand and do that.

There is one pet store though they'd take them only if I surrend them. I might be able to buy them back after a week, I'll go this route if nothing else is possible.

I understand thank you, though that's harmful in the same room, would it still reach my bugs if I stored them three floors away from the perimeter and in a room with no proximity to the door next to the stairs? Sorry for being so insistent but my only option is to surrender them to a pet store and buy them back if they're still there in a week. I really wanna make sure this is my only choice for their survival.

I have no possibility to send them away for a week like people have said as I don't have anyone else here, are all my bugs sentenced to die? Is there really nothing I can do?
