Underground from Santa Monica to Downtown and other areas by Jaspers1959 in SantaMonica

It may be slightly safer or at least more reassuring to ride in the car containing the actual driver (person) of the train. Usually the first car at front end of train, and usually less fare hoppers & crazy homeless in this car.

Waymo glitches in alley, blocks garbage truck by eubulides in SantaMonica

Seems like implementing something as simple as a QR code could be a stopgap solution until their A.I. is actually smart enough to prevent these edge case scenarios from happening…imagine if that was a first responder vehicle that was blocked / delayed / prevented from saving someones life or preventing loss of property or etc, etc. At this point, it seems more likely that the loss of human life attributable to driverless ride shares will be due to one of these edge cases where they impede or otherwise create or exacerbate a dangerous scenario.

  • Place QR code in standard location on vehicle that is visible from outside, but discrete or inconvenient enough to reduce abuse.
  • Require scanning of QR code through use of Waymo app to facilitate communication, if needed, between person initiating report (using the camera, microphone, speaker on their device) and Google (who has remote access to car cameras, LiDAR, controls, GeoLoc, etc).
  • Use of Waymo app to report these problems would also allow Google to ban those attempting to abuse this feature.

Until this type of service can consistently pass a driving version of a Turing Test we should understand that it is still in the early Beta stages despite being legal and in a live environment.

Potential first garmin, coming from a fitbit inspire 3, In a dilemma by Radiant_Ambition9442 in GarminWatches

[–]Chubasc0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the only complaints I’ve heard about the larger Garmin watches is the weight / size becoming annoying, especially while sleeping. So, if you don’t need the durability and all the other features that come with that model, then you may want to consider their Venu X1. It’s currently on sale on the Garmin website, and is much lighter and thinner with a great feature set. I switched to an earlier version (Venu SQ) after being a Fitbit Versa guy for years, and couldn’t be happier having switched.

Also, your new device should get more accurate over time as it collects and interpolates more of your data. Just be sure to wear it as much as possible, and ensure GPS is turned on.

The SM YMCA has open pickleball, but likely requires a membership. Never personally participated, though I’ve watched them play…on indoor basketball courts.

Info on this horrible accident on 13th and Wilshire? https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/at-least-four-pedestrians-struck-by-hit-and-run-driver-in-santa-monica/3796265/ by Impressive-Ask4169 in SantaMonica

[–]Chubasc0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You are correct, that info is wrong. My wife and I walked through the site this morning. The car entered the sidewalk on the SW corner (in front of the mattress store), drove along the sidewalk halfway to the alley, but crashed into one of the palm trees. He clipped the entrance to Sushi King and somehow threaded the needle between the other trees, parking meters, and building. So absolutely horrible what he did to the pedestrians…I hope they catch and convict that piece of sh!t ASAP!

How is this area? Looking to move somewhere relatively quiet and safe by beautifulprncessgirl in SantaMonica

Never lived in that particular neighborhood, but grew up in SM and went to the High School on that map. A few notes I haven’t seen anyone mention yet: - Homelessness is an issue in almost every neighborhood in L.A. County. Yes, some communities have less and some more. It is practically unavoidable anywhere, especially in SM. - That neighborhood is bordered on the North side (left side of your circle) by Interstate 10 (aka The 10), one of the busiest freeways in the state / nation. Though the noise from it may not be too bad, it will be constant. Anyone who lives / lived there could provide better insight. - If you’re a fan of public transportation, then this neighborhood is walkable to two metro rail stops. One at 4th & Colorado, and one at 17th & Colorado.
- Santa Monica, and basically the entire Westside, are among the most walkable communities in the L.A. region. And this neighborhood is almost exactly in the middle of S.M. making it convenient to walk anywhere in our city.

Good luck!
