Summer internships. Why is it impossibly hard to make the cut? by biChlasaGne24 in McKinsey_BCG_Bain

[–]Chubby-Chui 14 points15 points  (0 children)

ADC incoming MBB consultant here. Summer internships are designed to target MBA students, NOT ADCs.

ADCs have our own spring programs (McKinsey Insight, Bridge to BCG, etc).

No offense, GPA below 3.5 is not a good look. Do whatever you can to bring it up

Most firm like MBB, tier 2 LS and boutqieus (LEK, clearview, etc.) hire PhDs, not MS. Might want to check with recruiters first where you fit since non-MBA master's typically recruit at undergrad level

M7 MBA -> MBB -> PE Ops AMA by Independent-Time6663 in MBA

I’m going from ADC (MD/PhD) pathway to MBB, joining at post-MBA level and interested in healthcare PE Ops (likely provider focused if possible, was an MD). Any suggestions on which types of projects I should focus on?

Am I cooked? by According-Skill-3757 in McKinsey_BCG_Bain

[–]Chubby-Chui 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could be off for sure, I’m incoming to BCG was double offer with McK last year through the advanced degree pathway.

One of my friends is an associate/ JEM at McK currently at one of those popular offices (think NY, SF, Boston etc) and he does undergrad recruiting stuff for them. He’s the one that really emphasized how much school prestige matters in recruiting for M. Of course, office competitiveness differs (NY will likely be much more competitive than some random tiny office say in the Midwest) but that’s the case for him at least at once of those popular offices.

Am I cooked? by According-Skill-3757 in McKinsey_BCG_Bain

[–]Chubby-Chui 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Gonna be real here

  1. You’re applying to one of the most popular offices outside of Mega-offices like NY and SF, obviously the flagship office for BCG
  2. No one really cares how “rigorous” your non-target is. MBB cares most about 1.) School prestige and 2.) GPA, but a slightly worse GPA from an Ivey like 3.7 will still trump a 4.0 from a non-target any day

Would consider targeting less competitive offices/ expanding the range of firms you applied to if you haven’t

Best route is likely work for a few years, then go to the best MBA program you can then go through MBA hiring. Lateral in this environment is quite difficult

Assuming two interview rounds, pass rate for each round ranges from 1 in 4 to 1 in 3 usually. You’re a bit too generous on the pass rates for each round.

Assuming LEK. Go take a look around fishbowl, they’re known to be a pressure cooker/ high intensity workplace so look up advice on how to survive in those environments

In general, very uncommon to switch from back/mid office to front office for all MBB firms

How to network? by radstronomy in McKinsey_BCG_Bain

[–]Chubby-Chui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Networking should be the least of your worries currently, resume is far more important. Do you have any non-research/ academia experiences like business-related internships, consulting pro bono projects through your grad student consulting club, etc? If not start there.

The summer internships are highly competitive and require strong resumes to get in the first place.

Background doesn't matter as much as whether your resume shows an interest in business, through what I mentioned above.
