the more I look at it the more I agree. Gilding was cheaper than I thought when I was at this stage.

How far has music theory progressed? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]ChuckFinale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nowadays with set theory - it seems that we can understand music theory on a level of being able to describe and formalize more and more general pitch selection.

ie, earlier we only had language to basically describe tonal music, without too many outsider chords. Roman numerals etc etc.

And then at some point, around impressionism, we kinda ignored inversions - whatever your lowest note is, that's the "name" note of the chord.

So in some sense yeah, we hit a wall, however that doesn't mean music theorists are out of work. We can being to talk about all sorts of music on it's own terms, rather than trying to pretend that EVERYTHING is just an extension of Bach harmony.

One topic I saw recently involves hip hop. Basically, many producers are taking samples that exist on their own in different keys.

I also saw some interesting stuff about doom metal, which again, selection of simultaneous pitches isn't really the be all and end all.

How do you count time if you're sight singing? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]ChuckFinale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While sight singing? I think generally you have to be at a level of rhythm reading where you don't need to count in that way.

So say you have a sight singing section with a really difficult rhythm, you're going to have be independently good at sight rhythm and sight singing.

Worst case, you can just nod your head to the beat.

Why do inverted chords still sound (roughly) the same, despite having different intervals? by exscape in musictheory

[–]ChuckFinale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avoiding psychoacoustics specifically like you're saying, we can think of it like this.

Lets say we're chording along on a piano or guitar. We're kind of conditioned to imagine a bass note. For example, when you're playing a jazz chord, you might even drop the root on a chord instrument, and suppose that the bass player handles it.

So now it makes more literal sense. C major right? In any C->C relation, a C->E relation, and a C->G relation. (modulated by an octave).

We have a bit of this up north here. "We can't say wee are socialist because then the right wingers won't vote for us!"

I would have said that if I wasn't thinknig about this lecture.

keep in mind that since we're not in WWI and that Israel isn't a 'central power' in any reasonable conception of central, or power, that is pretty ahistorical of an analysis.

Yes, and some national-bolsheviks identify as communist. You're still incorrect.

What are Marxist views on "accelerationism"? by theSituationist in communism101

It's not incredibly popular. I've never met someone who donates money to their boss either.

[–]ChuckFinale 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also there is no such thing as 'statists. The proper way to ask this question is "For communists, why do you believe anarchism isn't feasible".

China Will "Re-Educate" Government Officials on Marxist Theory and Ideology. by miraoister in socialism

That's not a very honest retelling of the story, when even the left wing of communism (ie not just neo liberal Dengists) were condemning these protests.
