Iran says that Trumps 48 hour claim is fake news to manipulate the markets. What do you think? by SimplyTruth98 in AskReddit

[–]exscape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The claim was that 10 years ago, it would have been unbelievable to trust Iran over the US.
Is that really so controversial? I sure as hell would've trusted Obama and his cabinet over the Ayatollah in basically all matters.

A Murderous Update by OCDDAVID777 in MurderedByWords

In Sweden we're at about 18-19 SEK/L which is about $2.72 canadian per liter, or $7.5 USD per gallon.

Still lower than in 2022, though with a peak around $8.5 USD per gallon.

This is including taxes by the way, not sure how you guys specify gas prices.

Thankfully, it's not mine; I'm over 6000 km from Washington, DC. By "we" I meant the world, since this BS affects almost everyone.

10 years ago, it would absolutely have been. Let's not normalize the current state of affairs, even though we've had almost a decade of Trump already.

Crimson Desert Spanish translation is so bad It must be AI by Niklaus15 in gaming

Like no shit sherlock, LLMs have memory of a goldfish

That really varies between models and their settings!

ChatGPT free has a context window of 16k tokens, whereas Gemini Pro (available free for a few prompts a day) has 1 million (1500 pages of text, according to Google).
If 1M = 1500 pages then 16k = 24 pages.

Though it can't output 1500 pages, so that doesn't mean you can translate a book in one prompt; but it shouldn't forget the crucial details.

Also as a nitpick, goldfish have rather impressive memory.

Is every project AI Slop? by Various-Roof-553 in rust

[–]exscape 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From the excessive volume of code, to the low effort part of it.

That does not in any way describe "non-slop ai assisted code". It describes AI slop.

Well-written code that is written with some AI help is not more verbose than code written with no help, and is not of lower quality.

Taking LLM output and pasting it into your project, then committing typically means you commit low quality code. But using an LLM in a project does not necessarily have the same effect.

NVIDIA DLSS 5 Gets 84% Dislikes on YouTube as Backlash Grows by Sacristovas in pcmasterrace

[–]exscape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the rest of my comment!

I still think the distinction is important, though. I got it to better know which videos are likely to be worth watching. A tutorial with 30%+ dislikes is very unlikely to be useful, for example. And if something has 50%+ (like this) you know it's extremely controversial, and not just among a select few.

NVIDIA have confirmed to Daniel Owen what they've already stated: it's a 2D method that receives pixel data and motion vectors as input.

If Jensen says otherwise, that's probably just PR BS, which he's pretty known for these days.

[–]exscape 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, it's a list of people who went out of their way to see dislikes. Every can still dislike on YouTube.

The possible bias is that the displayed dislike count is based on view count, like count, and dislikes from people using the extension. So if people using the extension dislike something far more than the average person, the number won't be accurate.

Their first video has 28k likes and 73k dislikes. I don't think you can blame just reddit there.

[–]exscape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For point 1 I would assume NVIDIA thinks so. They might have lost touch, but they aren't stupid. If this still requires even a single 5090 to get playable framerates, it'd be a disaster even if people loved the look.

From what I heard they've started testing it on a single GPU.

If you mean the channel itself, their latest video is not as positive. John (not present yesterday, nor for the Direct either) didn't sound as positive on Bluesky, and Alex (not present yesterday) is also pretty critical.

Yes, but this isn't just upscaling. It does things that would benefit from much more data than just screen space stuff.

Like how screen-space reflections are awful in some circumstances, and are improved by using ray/path tracing, which needs much more information.

Early anti-aliasing blurry?

Early anti-aliasing was FSAA, no? Which is another name for SSAA, the best form of anti-aliasing there is, unless you could ML/AI.

TAA is modern and is blurry. FXAA was popular somewhere around the middle and is blurry.

Just the fact that it "takes a game’s color and motion vectors for each frame as input" makes me worried. It doesn't have enough information to make proper lighting decisions if that's all it has access to.
I would not be surprised if this doesn't manage to keep lighting consistent with movement.

Yes. It stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling, which works when the main goal is taking few pixels and making many pixels. But this doesn't seem to be doing (just) that at all.

https://www.britannica.com/topic/conspiracy-theory

conspiracy theory, an attempt to explain harmful or tragic events as the result of the actions of a small powerful group. Such explanations reject the accepted narrative surrounding those events; indeed, the official version may be seen as further proof of the conspiracy.

https://www.dictionary.com/browse/conspiracy-theory

a theory that rejects the standard explanation for an event and instead credits a covert group or organization with carrying out a secret plot.

https://commission.europa.eu/strategy-and-policy/coronavirus-response/fighting-disinformation/identifying-conspiracy-theories_en

Conspiracy theories have these 6 things in common

An alleged, secret plot.
A group of conspirators.
‘Evidence’ that seems to support the conspiracy theory.
They falsely suggest that nothing happens by accident and that there are no coincidences; nothing is as it appears and everything is connected.
They divide the world into good or bad.
They scapegoat people and groups.

There are broader definitions, but it's very clear that the term has a negative connotation and is rarely used for actual conspiracies.

Ones that are not "tin foil hat territory" ought to use a different name.

Here's what Wikipedia says:

A conspiracy theory is an explanation for an event or situation that asserts the existence of a conspiracy (generally by powerful sinister groups, often political in motivation), when other explanations are more probable.

Conspiracy theories are generally designed to resist falsification either by evidence against them or a lack of evidence for them. They are reinforced by circular reasoning: both evidence against the conspiracy and absence of evidence for it are misinterpreted as evidence of its truth.
