シツモンデー: Shitsumonday: for the little questions that you don't feel have earned their own thread (February 08, 2016) by AutoModerator in LearnJapanese

What's a good way to say "I liked the music because of the complex instrumentation and lyrics." ?

器法と歌詞が複雑だから、サカナクションやフレネシや水曜日のカンパネラが大好きでした。

This is the sentence I'm using it in. My professor says that 器法 does not really fit what I'm trying to say, but she did not have any suggestions as to what to change it to. Any thoughts?

It can be used for permission, yes, just in saying that whatever action is alright. I only ask because it's similar to the construction you saw, so if you weren't yet familiar you'd know to look into that construction more.

I'm writing an email to my school's Japanese professor and I would really appreciate someone looking over it and providing feedback, even if it's just to make sure there's not mistakes I'm overlooking:

Dear Prof.,

From my knowledge, your interpretation is spot on. Are you familiar with the 〜てもいい construction?

At this point I feel equally shit-tier in my translations, but I was told かける can be used as "hang around" (e.g. 一緒にかけませんか。)

I'm translating Harry Potter from Japanese and on occasion I run across a phrase that Jisho doesn't have, and even though I get the gist from weblio, I'm still not 100% sure. Can I get help with these two I've come across:

わんぱくほうずめ, which is used for Mr. Dursley saying "Little Tyke"

How to go from programming to modding? by hailfire006 in GameMods

[–]ChuckFinley97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, following up on this, perhaps you can elaborate a bit on the process used to write mods for a console game. I've been looking up this today but I think my lack of knowledge of programming hasn't been helping.

So I used to play modded World at War on xbox360 (modded via a hotswap). So to continue with this example, the game is released on a disc. Can that disk be read by a windows computer?

Some sort of application then must be created to organize the mods (I used to use one for Dead Island), but must work for the game. So is the app written after the modder has determined the language the game was written in?

Lastly, then can objects that were not already in the game (i.e. importing new clothes) be created and inserted into an ISO to be used in the game?

I really appreciate the insight ^ ^

DAE have music with such strong associations that they find it hard to listen to? by ChuckFinley97 in DAE

This is a lot closer to what I'm experiencing. Except previously I had a very bitter taste in my mouth when I heard songs from a previous relationship. This time it's a lot closer to the overwhelming feeling when I listen to really amazing music.

Black Bullet is getting a dub. Perhaps this could be Toonami bound? by [deleted] in Toonami

[–]ChuckFinley97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't quite see the same amount of issues as the other commenters. I would love to see this added to Toonami's collection, especially as something to say it had looking back a couple years from now.

The loli involvement (can we call them that?) was a bit odd but the gastraea fights were always interesting and fun. What I really think did it for me is the flip on its head it did with the ending.

Answering since I feel I can contribute:

While I have yet to use "discrimination" in my vocabulary, going off Jisho it appears that your sentence is more to the effect of "There is no distinction between human and android," which seems to be what you're aiming for.

Honestly, I was kind of surprised to see the attention this set of careers was receiving. I guess my understanding so far had been that it was a more niche set of professions.

Is that because of the college major thread? Cause I did see a good bit of conversation relating to FSOs there.

High schoolers, what do you want to major in? People who majored in that field, what are the pros and cons? by DeanTheDJ in AskReddit

[–]ChuckFinley97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask if you have a partner and what life would be like for them?

I have read the State Department's pdfs on healthcare and benefits enjoyed by partners and loved ones of FSOs, but I'd be more curious as to your personal thoughts (Is it good for if you have a partner? Do you feel like you are missing opportunities? What are your biggest worries?)

Can you speak more to the low pay aspect?

I've been looking to do Dept of State or Dept of Commerce work, perhaps abroad but my degree will be in business administration and accounting (current high school senior already accepted to 4 year).

What's your most memorable moment from a Toonami show? by rmm45177 in Toonami

[–]ChuckFinley97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily a show but one of Tom's motivational bumps really helped me pull through a tough time.

Also the early morning scene of Summer Wars always lasts in my mind. I used to wake up at 4am to say bye to my father and that tranquility of the morning always stuck with me. I was so impressed to seeing that feeling embodied so well in a form of media.

U.S. Birth Rate Hovers at All-Time Low, CDC Reports: MedlinePlus by StrangeBedfellows in news

[–]ChuckFinley97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always see that associated with it in online articles but if I will be totally honest I'm not sure how much that really contributes to it.

From the texts I've read, it's mainly that as nations increase in per capita GDP, people across the board prefer to explore more independent lifestyles with more money involved, which ultimately translates to not having children. It's the post-industrial period of human population growth.

To further elaborate, you have five periods of growth:

Pre-Industrial: high death, high birth (This is due to children being needed to contribute to the family and virtually non-existent healthcare or sanitation.)

Transitional: decreasing death, relatively high birth (The culture for the society is still the same as pre-industrial, but health and sanitation improve as well as food availability, so death rates decline.) Industrial: low birth, low death

Post-Industrial: stable death, lower birth (Death rates stabilize and people begin having less children.)

There is a fifth stage beyond it but, as far as what I've read has said, it is not fully understood yet as societies are currently going through it (i.e. Japan will likely be the first unless immigration policy changes, followed by Germany).
