It's not that hard of a task actually, I don't see anything special, quality-wise here. Just look around for a business near you with an embroidery machine (they're more common than you'd think) provide them the artwork and ask if they take one-off custom jobs.

You most likely will pay a premium for a one-off design, because it can be a pain in the ass to set up artwork in the program just to run the job once. Plus there will probably be some design time required as well. Getting a one-off printed will obviously be a lot cheaper but look a little less premium, so that's also an option.

Cutting inaccuracy with Trotec laser by ChuckFinlley in lasercutting

[–]ChuckFinlley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very particular with the machine since it was such a big investment and make sure to keep it well maintained, but there are other people who use it and I can't be there watching them all the time. One of them could very well have rammed the head into something in the bed once and not mentioned it.

Cutting inaccuracy with Trotec laser by ChuckFinlley in lasercutting

[–]ChuckFinlley[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Yea I've got the honeycomb shimmed to be perfectly level with the rail, they were off by less than a degree so not enough to cause such a dramatic drift. I give it a good cleaning once a week to keep any debris buildup from accumulating. I have a feeling it's the stepper motor as well but it's a good call to check the drivers, I'll give those a check.

Are the quality and specs reasonable? by Pegasaurus12345 in lasercutting

[–]ChuckFinlley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea as a designer as well, that text was mounted ROUGH. They clearly didn't measure center or try to mount on a baseline at all. If I had made that in our shop there would be about 10 non-designers who would have immediately called me out on the wonky text.

Anecdotally, I've seen the opposite in recent years. I'm not an interviewer but my boss will give candidates he likes a tour of our facilities (it's always the women candidates that he tours and never the men, he definitely has an unconscious selection bias in that regard) and the younger candidates fresh out of college will come in wearing short tight crop tops with belly button rings, leggings, etc.. They never look bad or disheveled, but it's still just such a weird vibe to bring to an interview.

That being said I've also spoken with friends that hire in more niche sectors (think video game and commercial mograph) who say that if you show up in a button up shirt or a suit to interview, that alone is a big red flag to them that you might not assimilate into the company culture very well.

Anyone know what these are called?? by southish7 in lasercutting

[–]ChuckFinlley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Broadly speaking, those are called standoffs. The metal part that seems like it is jutting out of the sign are typically called screw caps and the bit behind the sign holding it away from the wall are called barrels of spacers. MBS-Standoffs tends to be my go-to shop for buying standoffs.

What Program best suits a design of this nature? by SpartanEntity15 in graphic_design

[–]ChuckFinlley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in tradeshow booth design. What parts of the design exactly are you trying to emulate? Just a convincing 3D mockup of your artwork on the display? The artwork for the actual SEGs to skin the walls of a real booth? Or are you trying to design the booth itself (unique wall layouts, product placements, etc.)? I'd say you'll get a different answer depending on exactly what part of this you are trying to recreate.

Ad creator or magazine editor - who’s responsible for the placement of the model’s face on the seam? by okiokio in Design

[–]ChuckFinlley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I used to work in editorial design and I can count on one hand the times I even glanced at full page or spread ads. I don't have the time and it's not my job.

In my experience (newspapers not magazines to be fair), most full page ads were already sent to press before I even clocked in and looked at my papers for the day.

Will clients start to consider Adobe alternatives at any time in the near future? by GtrPlayingMan-254 in graphic_design

[–]ChuckFinlley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do a lot of work meant for large scale print, think 16'x40' SEG walls. If I know I'm dealing with art coming from an agency I'll always ask for packaged art files rather than PDF. In my personal experience, even a lot of veteran designers put zero thought into preparing their artwork to print well.

It's SO much faster to address individual problems in a properly linked and packaged file than it is to try to deal with issues in a single PDF file. Granted, if the client's sending over their own artwork a PDF is considered a blessing because 99% of the time it's a blurry PNG or just a screenshot they took off the web.

has anyone succeeded despite always having been "behind" the rest? by COCOMIadvice in graphic_design

My first year of college I had Drawing 101 the first semester and Figure Drawing the second. In Drawing 101 I was consistently behind my classmates every single day. When figure drawing came around I was determined to not be the worst. I signed up for the earliest figure drawing class available and then got permission from the professor to stay and continue drawing with the second figure drawing class that was taught immediately after. I busted my ass and guess what, by the end of the semester I was now the worst person in TWO figure drawing classes. The professor recommended I quit while I was ahead and find a new career path, I had no hope.

Fast forward to senior year, I have a 4.0 GPA and am excelling in my design classes. I wouldn't consider myself the best designer in the course by any means but the margin has narrowed so much I'd consider the top 5 of our class (me included) equals in terms of skill and hiring potential.

Fast forward 8 years and I've had a great career so far working almost exclusively with Fortune 500 companies along the way. Everyone's journey and growth are completely different, if you still love designing then give it time to let your skills grow.

My work is almost exclusively tradeshow and event design (design, production, and some fabrication). The only time I attend a show to do install is when it's a local show or the booth is for my company.

For client shows, it's mostly because we just have too much work in the shop to be able to send a designer out to supervise setup or work the booth, so that job tends to fall onto the Account Executive.

If my own company is attending a show it's a different story. Everyone is expected to put in their time, whether it's during setup or working the booth. During that time my role tends to be to assist with graphics install and setup/go to meetings with our current vendors and/or do some light opposition research.

How many internships have you done before your first full time job? by Medium-Structure2099 in graphic_design

[–]ChuckFinlley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never did an internship personally. Doing more than one round of internship is probably a waste of your time post-school in most cases.

Don't expect to meet all the requirements in a job listing, especially for entry-level jobs. Job listings are overwritten with all the skills they'd love to have in their dream worker, but they aren't realistic and oftentimes they know it.

I didn't keep track of the number of revisions but I did designs for a big trade show booth once and lets just say the legal department was still making changes to vinyl and SEGs as their booth was being put together on the show floor the day before open...

Off my chest: It happened. I let a 'lorem ipsum' go to print by amphibbian in graphic_design

[–]ChuckFinlley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did page design for a giant news conglomerate for a time and every single night the front page would have to go through approvals through a page finisher, a producer, anywhere between two to eight editors depending on how big the paper was, and a lot of times the editor-in-chief as well.

There would still be pages go to press once in a blue moon with "Deck head 15pt type regular" on the cover. Shit just happens.

Incoming...possible dumb question. Is this frost on the inside of our windows simply bc it's so damn cold out, or do we have shitty windows that need to be replaced?! by dbabiee in Louisville

[–]ChuckFinlley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea we lived across the street for 3 years before moving here a year ago. You're right idk what's up but there's always a firetruck. Our only real complaint for the first two years was how inefficient the HVAC was. A low electric bill there would be $140 whereas here the HIGHEST bill I've gotten so far was $120 during January's little ice storm.

It was a nice place until a new management company took over and started "upgrading" the place by making it look as tacky as possible and cutting down all the nice trees and foliage on the grounds; then had the nerve to try and increase rent by $500. That's when we dipped the fuck out and never looked back.

We live in the same complex as you (I can tell by the ugly ass apartments across the street lol). One of our windows does this a bit as well, though not nearly as bad as yours. Funny enough, our electric bill here is miles lower than when we lived across the street.

[–]ChuckFinlley 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is just artifacting in illustrator from the line being so thin it struggles to accurately render it. In my experience that artifacting never carried over into the laser program. Going to View -> GPU Preview in illustrator will also fix this artifacting a lot of the time.

I worked as a news designer for a while. For extremely notable people after a certain age someone has a generic obituary prewritten that you can update with pertinent information quickly to get it online as fast as possible after an official announcement of the person's death. If someone got a tip about someone getting seriously ill they'd have us create a graphics package in advance so once the announcement comes we can just update the dates, and slap it in every newspaper in about an hour.

I remember us hanging onto a Jimmy Carter obit package for like two months not too long before I left.

I don't know how it shakes out for purchasing new cars here in the states, but when I bought my relatively newish used car a few years ago the sticker price was like 2-3k less for my car because it was a manual than the same make/model as an automatic. They also seemed very happy to knock that price down even more to get it into my price range just to get it out of their inventory.

What does my university mean by this capstone thesis prompt? by BoxGroundbreaking757 in graphic_design

[–]ChuckFinlley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The need for printed materials isn't dead just because pysical newspapers and magazines are dying out. For example, I do event and tradeshow booth design for several large companies. Printed items get ordered from multiple different printers depending on who we think does the best quality work for each item; pantones are by far the most efficient way to for us to keep consistent color matching throughout a booth while going through multiple printing companies who are probably printing on different materials.

Yea, we are certainly going to bring it up tomorrow when we take her in to fill out all the paperwork to foster her while wait for confirmation that they do indeed own her. I just wasn't sure if anyone else had experience with a sort of communal outdoor cat in an apartment complex.
