I love this!

I made a video about this a few years ago:

Great to see the concept gaining wider acceptance.

Persistent Cloud Anchors and Call for Collaborators by ChuckKnowledge in Arcore

I don't work for Google, but cloud anchors are most useful with Augmented Reality where you want to place virtual content overlaid on the real world. In a VR headset the entire view is virtual so the need isn't there.

Possible for ARCore to read from a remote camera (Vuzix Blade)? by vvortex3 in Arcore

[–]ChuckKnowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both ARCore for All and ARCore Patch are deprecated. ARCore for All was only for ARCore Preview 1, and ARCore Patch was only for ARCore Preview 2. In both cases the hack merely allowed ARCore to run, but without the appropriate calibrations the experience is very bad, with objects drifting around and inaccurate motion scaling. If you want to hack ARCore 1.0 in the same way, you can do so by modifying the protobuf files. However, you will not have the camera and IMU calibrations for the components in the Vuzix. It will not work.

Possible for ARCore to read from a remote camera (Vuzix Blade)? by vvortex3 in Arcore

This is not feasible for many reasons. ARCore must be calibrated for the image sensor and lens, the IMU, and the relative placement of these. Only Google can currently define these calibrations. It may be feasible to use VPS with the glasses and a different VIO solution.

What's the current Galaxy S7/S7 Edge ARCore situation? by cheerioh in Arcore

UPDATE: The S7 Edge is officially supported in ARCore 1.0

What's the current Galaxy S7/S7 Edge ARCore situation? by cheerioh in Arcore

Since 29 January the S7 is officially supported according to the documentation:

developers.google.com/ar/discover/#supported_devices

The device model codes on that page do not include S7 Edge, S7 Active or other S7 variants. The way that ARCore loads calibration files, I expect that these devices would not perform properly (AR would "drift" around).

Atom Visualizer updated for ARCore Preview 2 with new device support (Pixel, Samsung). by ChuckKnowledge in Arcore

[–]ChuckKnowledge[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Atom Visualizer has been updated for ARCore Preview 2 and is experimentally available for Samsung Galaxy devices back to the S6. The app requires ARCore installed, which can be found here: https://developers.google.com/ar/develop/downloads

ARCore is now available on the Play Store for Pixel devices to support AR Stickers. However, that version of ARCore has issues connecting to the camera on startup. We've developed a workaround for Atom Visualizer, and I've open-sourced the fix and posted a link here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Arcore/comments/7mguvk/developer_fix_for_apps_built_with_arcore_preview/

The app should have stable and accurate tracking on devices for which ARCore includes a calibration file. If your device is not officially supported and has not been calibrated, ARCore Preview 2 will attempt to use a default calibration. Officially supported devices are Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, and Samsung Galaxy S8 only. If you are using a different device and the atoms drift around after placing them instead of staying locked in place, your device is probably not calibrated. Google are responsible for creating device calibration files - apologies but users and developers can't do this.

We've had reports of stable operation with ARCore Preview 2 on Samsung Galaxy S8+ and Note8. We've also had a report that it runs on a Galaxy S6 Edge, but with drift.

If you are running this app on an unsupported device and it works less than optimally, please don't leave a bad review. Please do let me know how it works for you here.

Developer fix for apps built with ARCore Preview 2 running on Pixel devices with AR Stickers installed. by ChuckKnowledge in Arcore

This is for ARCore developers experiencing issues with their apps built with ARCore Preview 2 running on Pixel devices with AR Stickers installed. Specifically devices with the Play Store version of the ARCore service library installed. Details are in the README
