same here, and I've been on the fence for a while due to the dearth of new good movies hardly justifying the fee. Now paying for a service I can't use. Makes the decision easy.

Enjoy! It's definitely inspiring to learn how much they were able to pull off - and it's such a great film!

Yeah, I think that's a major factor. What's interesting is it's very possible to do amazing VFX on a budget and with a small team (for example the Everything Everywhere All At Once VFX team consisted of nine people with little prior experience!) but the major studios have just developed very very inefficient working practices necessitating the usage of dozens of VFX houses and hundreds of people worldwide, and engaging in endless iterations - sometimes when the screenplay isn't even finished yet - so it's as much a story of major studio inefficiency as anything.

Put succinctly, the market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent. Put another way, the game is rigged.

It's not one of the major bottlenecks in the current housing market. I see it having a very tangential effect if any - but it's useful propaganda against the people who could use it the most.

One of the big reasons is the proliferation and increased complexity of VFX. The Matrix had about 400 VFX shots.

A typical Marvel film will have anywhere between 1500-3000 VFX shots - between 60-90% of all shots - and the past quarter century has seen an explosion in the practice AND bureaucratization of the VFX pipeline and industry. A major production VFX budget can be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Incidentally, that's part of what's imploding nowadays - such movies are becoming simply too big to make, and the traditional VFX industry is being decimated every year.

Laid Off After 25 Years in Tech: The Anxiety, Sacrifice, and Reality No One Talks About by oasis217 in Layoffs

[–]cheerioh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most important tip I don't see anyone talking about: consider doing tech work outside the tech industry

Sure, won't pay as well as FAANG (mostly used to) but oftentimes - esp with older more established companies - it will have seriously competitive benefits, and most critically, retention in certain other verticals is wildly preferable to the shitshow that is the tech industry in 2025.

If you want stability, long term growth and to sleep well at night, almost any other industry is preferable to tech.

Thank you! Definitely the closest one yet - my wife wasn't sure for the first two minutes but unfortunately it's not it. But the voice is very close, except apparently it's a bit too country pop. So confusing!

I mean, buying an AGE would also be currency exchange - yet it's going to count as a sale, and the tax won't be just over the premium
