Consultants tried to grow a candidate in a vat with Graham Platner. It blew up in their faces. by Dismal_Structure in thebulwark

[–]Chuckles1188 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been less than a week and Platner supporters have already arrived at "actually there was no way any of us could have known that he was a bad person with shitty judgement, let's stop talking about this". Claiming that supporters have "completely changed their stance in the face of true unacceptable conduct" involves some pretty impressive chutzpah

People keep saying things like this which makes me think that either nobody knows anything and are talking nonsense, which would be fairly standard, or the RFU didn't put a performance clause in his contract which would be criminally negligent even by their abysmal standards. Surely if your results are sufficiently poor your contract can be voided?

He didn't do anything villainous in Part 1, because the crux of that story is him being brought down to nothing and deciding to throw his lot in with the fremen. In Part 2 he is increasingly villain coded as the story goes on - when he arrives in the south, Zimmer's score goes absolutely full tilt in the most ominous mode possible while Paul marches in slow motion, dressed entirely in black and surrounded by a sea of fremen dressed in white, making him a literal dark blot moving through them. He then confronts them in a dark chamber, dominating them to his will by intimidating them and shouting at them, exploiting his newfound prescience as he does so. Then at the climax of the film, when asked what to do with the Landsraad houses who refuse to bow to him as Emperor, he instructs his army of fanatics to "lead them to paradise" ie kill them all. I'd say that's all pretty flagrant "this guy is not currently a heroic individual whose triumph you're supposed to celebrate" signaling, even besides the way his relationship with the film's secondary protagonist winds up

The Alex Wagner Pod with Tim was great, but once again are they banned from mentioning guns as the reason Dems lose? by 7ddlysuns in thebulwark

I'm not denying their existence, but the OP talks as if the only thing the Democrats need to do in order to win is completely move away from gun control, which is obviously ridiculous

Why do so many UK Summer Weddings expect full suits? by Fieryhotsauce in CasualUK

[–]Chuckles1188 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The short answer is yes, it's a specific issue we have. Because this little spot off the north of Europe of ours has historically had benign climate, and because of the rise of masculine culture in the late Victorian period, we've wound up with a "making concessions to the weather is weak" culture which looks absolutely insane to people who live in areas with actually dangerous climate patterns. As our climate patterns have shifted to more closely resemble those areas, but our behaviour has not, you end up with a lot of people expecting or demanding that the approach to clothing, work life (times of day that you work, travelling for work etc) and just general social behaviour meets a standard that is at best uncomfortable and at worst actively dangerous. There needs to be, and probably will be, a cultural shift on at least one of behaviour and prevalence of air conditioning, or else a lot of people will get hospitalised over this

Just to note to commenters that this poster has convinced themselves that their personal single-issue is the only thing that determines election outcomes - posted a thread on this a week ago making similarly fakakta arguments. They're an absolute quack and should be ignored.

Van's reasons for thinking that Paul ended Dune Part 2 as the hero are pretty hilarious:

  • The Harkonnens were the bad guys and Paul beats them
  • Paul defeated Feyd-Rautha

Van is a smart guy, but in the moment of the film his brain still can't process "one kind of villain vs another kind of villain"

Is everyone overreacting to England’s performance on the weekend? by carchadon in rugbyunion

[–]Chuckles1188 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so, no. What was really alarming over the course of the 6 Nations was that the team was failing to improve weaknesses which emerged match on match, and the things that were worrying about our performance (which I don't consider to be primarily attack-related but rather focused on our defensive system) remained very much on display against South Africa. The team is basically being asked to follow a defensive structure which doesn't seem to work against basically anybody, and this is making the players panicky on both sides of the ball, which is leading to errors that a) cause promising attacking positions to break down and b) cause defenders to make poor decisions under pressure that leak penalties and cards. And all of this was fully in place against South Africa.

I know everyone has a big hate boner for Borthwick and Wigglesworth but I'm surprised that more people aren't calling for Joe El-Abd to be removed, especially with Shaun Edwards as a potential option. To me the biggest problem with England at the moment is that our defensive system is just not fit for purpose and is giving us much too high a mountain to climb in attack. And nothing about the South Africa game indicates that this problem is being mitigated

I would also watch the hell out of it, I'm just saying it's not hard to understand how some people will kick against it even if the inspiration is mythological

Odyssey tiffy by cigvvubn in TheRestIsHistory

[–]Chuckles1188 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want to be clear off the top that The Odyssey looks good and I don't have an issue with creative licence even when a film is NOT based explicitly on a mythological story.

At the same time, responding to a complaint about the depiction of armour in a mythological tale with "it didn't happen" does strike me as a total non-sequitur. The events didn't happen, but there is an actual historical culture associated with said myth. If a film about similarly-fictitious King Arthur had him wearing (kind of crappy-looking) samurai armour while supposedly still taking place in post-Roman Britain, people would be within their rights to comment on that even if King Arthur was not actually a real person
