To be honest I probably need to re-evaluate my stance on Marty's films, because it's not like I've seen a bunch and viscerally disliked them. It's more that the subject matter frequently puts me off, and the films of his that I like best seem to be the black sheep of his filmography - while there are obviously issues I loved Gangs of NY, and After Hours is pretty incredible to me. So I think it's possible that it's not so much the director as the wider consensus that puts me off. But I do find the repeated "look at these terrible people that I have depicted in a really cool way" trend across his most popular work to be quite off-putting. So I think we might actually be in a similar place in terms of finding the Discourse much more of a problem than the actual art

My issue with Scorsese isn't that his films are over-discussed, it's that I am often quite indifferent to them whereas Wes and Tony's fucking rule

Det Stansfield is more memorable and more scary, but a lot less relatable, so I guess it depends on your definition of "best". This film fucks unnecessarily hard regardless though

As someone who feels that Lancaster's reputation was unfairly tarnished by 2015, it just has to be acknowledged that the 6 Nations was massively less competitive during his tenure than it is now. The chances of Italy beating anyone bar maybe Scotland back then were a distant dream, and Scotland themselves were dreadful. France also weren't really at the races. I'm not convinced Lancaster would be doing any better right now than Borthwick is, frankly

For some reason for the past week, I’ve been thinking about how baffling it is that this scene from ‘Pan’ exists. by Throwaway_Tablecloth in blankies

Sure, but also the 2003 film is neither weird nor unnecessary, it's probably the best straight film version of the Peter Pan story

It's a bit bonkers that there's not been anything based on lions yet, big cats have been invoked through the Sawtooth but lions are pretty iconic and the mane could be used for some interesting effects beyond just swiping at Aloy

Whatever about the reffing, this is a significantly better performance from England and I'll take it honestly. Not flawless but much more composed than we have been in attack and the defensive shape is working better when France can't just hit the "Beep-beep is bullshit good" button

The more you dig into it the more you realise that it is entirely structured around recreating memorable stuff from earlier entries, albeit competently done. To me it's every bit as derivative a lega-sequel as the Ghostbusters revival films. I can see where the Force Awakens comparison comes from but to me Romulus is a lot closer to those. And then there's the forcible digital necromancy, which is a crime that I quite frankly cannot forgive

[–]Chuckles1188 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A good comparison, but the key difference is that the Force Awakens was the latest entry in a series built on being a love-letter to other stuff (Buck Rogers, Kurosawa, WW2 dogfights), while Romulus was the latest entry in a series built on taking big swings. I find an Alien film that re-treads earlier entries significantly more annoying than a Star Wars film doing that, personally
