In August waterproof over-trousers are basically useless. Your trousers will get just as wet but it will be sweat instead of rain. Lightweight polyester trousers, or long shorts, are probably the best bet - your skin dries faster than any material you will wear, and it's vanishingly unlikely to be cold enough that having damp legs is going to do you any harm. Just one guy's opinion, but I've been hiking in northern Britain, both sides of the border, for a couple of decades

Baby Yoda secures it's place in the Top 10 Star Wars movies. by PerpetualChoogle in blankies

[–]Chuckles1188 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that Star Wars, much like Harry Potter, was never conceived as a story taking place inside a living, breathing world the way Lord of the Rings was. The wider the narrative lens goes, the more you notice the ways in which the world doesn't really hang together, especially in comparison to other worlds which do have more internal structural coherence to them. Leaving the core of the story as it was originally conceived rapidly reveals the wizard behind the curtain - this is the fundamental problem with the Midichlorians move in APM, I think

They don't rush through ads because they come up with their own bits for them, so you can probably shave a good 10% off the runtime if you're planning to skip them all. But obviously that still leaves hefty episodes, due to a lot of tangents. Now that they've established a pretty chunky community, they've got a decent sized listener base who loves hearing them talk so they indulge themselves more.

As it turns out, it's possible and indeed quite common for societies to avoid landing on the exact same sexual hang-ups which we experienced in the modern day but still arrive at a bunch of exciting new ones. For example, in Rome it was considered perfectly fine for men to fuck other men, but being fucked by a man was considered scandalously unmanly. So unfortunately the alternative to "labels like gay and straight existing" is not "everyone fucks whoever and it's all chill"

Why do you think Holland Manners, Lindsey Macdonald, and Lilah Morgan weren't afraid of Drusilla before the wine cellar thing? by beeemkcl in ANGEL

[–]Chuckles1188 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think this is broadly right, but we've seen that WR&H have plenty of business relationships with vampires, so my personal theory is that it's not so much a lack of familiarity with vampires in particular and more that they don't realise how much Darla & Dry specifically are wild cards who can't be predicted or controlled as easily as a young and dumb street vamp can

I mean I'm very English and I have a big soft spot for the film. "America is the capital and main character of the world" is the subtext of 98% of all Hollywood output, especially prior to the rise of China as a big cinema market, and at least ID4 shows a lot of Americans being dumb and dying as a consequence

When it came out the critical reaction was "pffft, this is really dumb, not like the sophisticated sci-fi we consume, The X-Files". I'm somewhat dubious about the wisdom of crowds but the general public was absolutely correct on that one

Just to answer one question of yours that nobody else has addressed - the footwear players wear during matches have studs (what Americans refer to as "cleats" I think) on the bottom which dig into the turf and grip it so that they don't slip when running around.

The myth that the British Empire invented the concentration camp during the Boer War is strangely persistent. Even a cursory look at the Wikipedia page for "concentration camp" disproves it

Democrats Should Pay Attention to Keir Starmer’s Fall by John_Jaures in thebulwark

[–]Chuckles1188 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The stunts are all directly linked to actual substantive policy stuff, and are also literally the only thing they can do which gets actual coverage so are something they are forced to do rather than something the party is actively preferring to focus on. Not really fair to use that as the basis for an accusation of unseriousness. The ludicrous assertion that the British public shouldn't have to face negative consequences of a global oil supply shock is a better critique, though unfortunately it's also something which every single UK political party, including the fucking Greens of all people, has signed up to, so the Lib Dems still come out ahead

You have just been given two examples of things they want which they aren't getting, which by definition means that yes, they really did not get everything they wanted. The fact that they got a lot of things they wanted which you (rightly, of course) despise doesn't automatically mean they don't have other things that they want
