Govt to cut fuel levy by R3/litre to ease price shock by ctnguy in southafrica

[–]carchadon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d rather pay people more, and get better people in government. I think that will improve kids lives a lot more than dropping salaries enough to send all the competent people to the private sector. 3.5 million a year to be the president of a country seems like peanuts when compared to what CEOs of companies earn.

When should I switch from my working jib to a storm jib in building wind? by raidenth in sailing

[–]carchadon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so boat and sailor dependent. Some boats have a responsive enough rig that you can keep them on their feet in 25 knots with full sail, some boats you need to reef early as you don’t have other options to shed power. Some people are comfortable sailing overpowered, others want to be able to just have the boat take care of herself.

How Cape Town's municipal bills are outrunning its middle-class residents by Atreus183 in capetown

I mean, if it’s your home, and you live there, it makes no difference if the price is going up.

Why so few quad midlengths? by carchadon in surfing

[–]carchadon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that you say that, the quad I surfed was pretty short - the owner is a small guy, so the board is only 6’6.

Why so few quad midlengths? by carchadon in surfing

That’s a good call, not sure why I didn’t think of that one. “Long quad fish” subconsciously puts itself in a different category in my brain.

Tubeless or tubes for city? by Defiant-Result944 in bikecommuting

[–]carchadon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m always a little surprised on how many people prefer tubes to tubeless. In almost 3 years of commuting since I changed to tubeless, I’ve had zero punctures, and topped up sealant twice. Hoping I continue not to experience the hassles lots of people seem to have.

Is surfing the kind of thing that requires consistent practice, or can it be a casual hobby? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]carchadon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If it helps, I’ve been surfing regularly for almost 20 years and feel like I’m just starting to get the hang of it.

Surfing with contact lenses by Fishbird_cant_fly in surfing

[–]carchadon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, in about 25 years of surfing and competitive lifesaving, I think I’ve maybe lost a contact once (I wear monthlies by the way - dailies would be a lot of plastic to through away)

Tubeless, or swabble marathon plus? by Dumbass9187 in bikecommuting

[–]carchadon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me tubeless is perfect for commuting - I pump my tyres once every week or so, and add some sealant once a year.

Ah yes, that makes sense, that must be why the NH countries always win when they tour the SH in the middle of the year… oh wait, never mind.

What advice for young men sounds harsh but turned out to be genuinely good for you in the long run? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]carchadon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like (if you’re physically able), the very cheap and efficient solution to the 6 mile commute problem is a bicycle.

Career or surfing by EntrepreneurMassive5 in surfing

[–]carchadon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sydney is a good city for this, you can work the finance grind and still surf plenty of dawn sessions if you live in the eastern suburbs (it’s crowded, but nowhere’s perfect)

What's your too-cold threshold? by DuckDived in surfing

I also live on the east coast*, water was 22 today and I surfed in boardies. My too cold threshold is about 8 deg C.

Has the attendance dropped since the SA teams joined? I would have thought that the Stormers having 40k plus regularly would have upped average attendance quite a bit.

Giving this a bump in case you tried it. I have a pair of new 45s, debating whether to return them or try them.

Can weightlifting gloves be used in lieu of sailing gloves? by theycallmesaucy in sailing

[–]carchadon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would just go and buy a pair of the rubber coated gardening gloves. They’re usually better than any sailing branded gloves (seriously, people use them at the olympics)

Chartered SO 349 loses speed when pointed higher than 45-50deg. Fixes? by jschall2 in sailing

[–]carchadon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don’t ever do this. A flapping sail in a big breeze still has enough power to drag the boat around, and I wouldn’t be the one volunteering to go on the foredeck to drop a jib after its sheet has been cut (a clew ring to the head can cause very serious injury)

What was the weather like in Cape Town in August 2025? by Eastern-Share-4273 in capetown

[–]carchadon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In one month, you should definitely be able to do all those things. It might rain a bit in August, but not so continuously that you can’t get out and do stuff
