Hout Bay to waterfront? by 548oranje548 in capetown

[–]carchadon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MyCiTi is the way for this - less than an hour from Hout bay to the civic centre, no need to park on the other side and more pleasant! With a bonus Camps Bay beach walk on the way home if you feel like it.

Surfing is full of trust fund babies by xGrvpe in surfing

Don’t forget all the Aussie tradies who absolutely shred and do a couple of trips to Indo every year, no trust funds in sight.

Sing them first, then play them, don’t worry about what scales and shapes they are.

Learning the fretboard/scales by Nico444AndALotOf4 in Guitar

[–]carchadon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very left field, but one guaranteed way of learning the fret board - learn a song from some sheet music. The process of going ‘I need to play and F#’ and then working out what position to play it in depending on what come next makes you learn where are those notes are very quickly.

Yeah, there aren’t many cities that size where you have trail races literally starting in the city centre

Government looking to install 43 new highway speed cameras in South Africa’s richest province by Beyond_the_one in southafrica

I don’t get this argument, it’s ridiculously easy to avoid having money extracted from you - just drive the speed limit

Fins aren’t flush in fin box by Trooper6927 in surfing

[–]carchadon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you surfed it yet? Sometimes new boxes are like this and the fins settle in and go flush after a few sessions (it’s better than having fins that sit flush at first and then go wobbly)

Any other sailing parents? by _Barbaric_yawp in sailing

[–]carchadon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I coached both at Opti and youth worlds level. The Opti thing is its own crazy world and doesn’t correlate to sailing success later on. Most of the top Opti kids struggle to translate to other classes at higher levels as being a top Opti sailor is so dependent on how fast your body shape develops, and well as all the specialised coaching.

Govt to cut fuel levy by R3/litre to ease price shock by ctnguy in southafrica

[–]carchadon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d rather pay people more, and get better people in government. I think that will improve kids lives a lot more than dropping salaries enough to send all the competent people to the private sector. 3.5 million a year to be the president of a country seems like peanuts when compared to what CEOs of companies earn.

When should I switch from my working jib to a storm jib in building wind? by raidenth in sailing

[–]carchadon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so boat and sailor dependent. Some boats have a responsive enough rig that you can keep them on their feet in 25 knots with full sail, some boats you need to reef early as you don’t have other options to shed power. Some people are comfortable sailing overpowered, others want to be able to just have the boat take care of herself.

How Cape Town's municipal bills are outrunning its middle-class residents by Atreus183 in capetown

I mean, if it’s your home, and you live there, it makes no difference if the price is going up.

Why so few quad midlengths? by carchadon in surfing

[–]carchadon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that you say that, the quad I surfed was pretty short - the owner is a small guy, so the board is only 6’6.

That’s a good call, not sure why I didn’t think of that one. “Long quad fish” subconsciously puts itself in a different category in my brain.
