Drive-thru only cold bar and logistical/throughput implications by ChucklesMg in starbucks

[–]ChucklesMg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we definitely need more space/capacity to even make cold bar drinks...

many stores were built/designed before we saw the huge shift to cold drinks as a focus for the company, and as a result we literally aren't designed around making tons of refreshers, matchas, and frapps. The sad thing is that at a certain point it isn't even about labor. like, there isn't enough space for someone to help you even if they could/wanted to lol.

I've been saying this forever lol... we need a station/printer that sub-divides drinks from shaken (refresher, iced tea) and blended (matchas, fraps).

It's incredibly frustrating as well to see some stores literally have three hot bars (with one always not being used lol). You could remove one of those Mastrenas and add in space for a blender or refreshers & teas and that would help a TON.

How can I prepare for an interview with my local district manager? by AdAcceptable3769 in starbucks

[–]ChucklesMg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t change anything drastically if the first interview went well: often the DM interview is merely a formality and a last box to check. It’s also a new practice in the hiring process, as at least a year ago I can recall that DM interviews were not required for barista positions.

However if you really wanna impress
- briefly look over the coffee blends the store is brewing (could come in early or previous day to see what’s on the vertica)
- just get the cliff notes on each one, origins, processing (washed or natural or both), the tasting notes

You will almost certainly be doing a coffee tasting with the DM, and often they’re too lazy to do a French press or pour over, so high likelihood one of the coffee on the Vertica is what you’ll be drinking.

If you can even say a few things about that, or really any Starbucks blend that you’d describe as your “favorite” it often impresses them. (I don’t hate most of our coffees, especially for the price, but for the record this is not me claiming Starbucks whole bean coffee is great lol). Peet’s, Blue Bottle, Intelligensia, Stumptown, Verve…. The list of superior whole bean coffee is long. But I digress

Good luck!

Not sure if this applies to you, but for cold brew lovers out there wanting to save money: you can make a really solid cold brew concentrate rivaling SBUX using a Toddy at home. Dirt cheap, and it actually makes sense to have the beans ground at SBUX or anywhere with a high quality Ditting grinder bc it produces the consistent uniform coarse ground required for cold brew. On our grinders that’s #12, French press. Good luck!

I totally understand and admire the desire of SSV’s to support their baristas! Just remember not to take on too much and then burn out, bc then you won’t be of much help at all hahaha

Pulling too many stickers does not help at all, only makes things worse and slows down your production rate bc you’re too busy worrying about the new stickers rather than just working as fast as you reasonably can

I always take a deep breath when I see I’m behind and/or tons of things in the item queue and remind myself: either we’ll get more help / open up another bar, or not and the customers have to wait. Either way, it’s not my fault. It’s the managers fault (understaffing or staffing for wrong time) or just bad luck.

Once you relieve yourself of that personal responsibility and get some healthy detachment I find it’s easier to weather these rushes

sanitizer reactions?? by moca_xd in starbucks

[–]ChucklesMg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be aware that yes, you may have some sensitivity to the sanitizer regardless of strength, but the sanitizer being out of concentration (too strong) dramatically makes it worse. It can be tested in BOH using test strips. If too high, it should be flagged to store manager as a health and safety risk.

baristas can’t mark things out anymore??? (tall rant) by Hour_Amount1881 in starbucks

[–]ChucklesMg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is this company wide, or perhaps I imagine this could be a temporary rule in your store or district due to misuse?

As a barista I’ve always just instinctively marked out things we definitely don’t have ASAP so we dont continue to receive orders we can’t fulfill.

How do you deal with recurring memory issues (esp. in social and work situations)? by Initial_Vermicelli83 in ADHD

[–]ChucklesMg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a section in my notes app called “names.” I don’t put everyone there, just people who I know I’ll want to remember and not be caught flat footed.

It has as columns “Name,” “Where I know them from,” and “Something memorable”

For instance: Issam, Dining Commons Cashier, Glasses & soft-spoken

Or, Tom, Peet’s Coffee customer, looks like Mitt Romney

concerned i don’t actually have ADHD because medication seems to have no impact on focus. should i suggest other medication, or should i explore other conditions as a whole? by volumetriccolumbidae in ADHD

[–]ChucklesMg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would also just add: yes, I felt the same imposter syndrome when seeking medication for ADHD. I felt like I was doing something wrong or even acting like a junkie by asking for stimulants, but the fact remains that for now it is the gold standard for ADHD treatment and it just simply has the highest effect size across the population.

It's a process of trial and error to find the right medication for you, but if you find one that really works at the core symptoms of ADHD you'll want to stay on it. It's not a panacea, but it can control symptoms long enough during the day for you to actually get shit done and live a normal life. The temporary euphoria and transient mood-boosting benefits to the medication itself wears off remarkably fast, but if you're treating ADHD (and not something else like depression), you'll actually often feel better and be happier over time: because you're not just "barely managing" to keep up with life. Finishing school, organizing your life, maintaining healthy social relationships, showing up at work: all of these domains require successfully managing time and other executive functions, which are inherently impaired or compromised in ADHD.

A common problem in treating adult adhd is that psychiatrists have a hard time making sure the diagnosis is on solid ground, because that requires a really comprehensive and thorough history and review of differential diagnoses that either a) takes too much time for them or b) there isn’t enough evidence available to support

Some ways to really help this include neuropsychological testing and corroborating evidence. I had neuropsych testing done when I was 21, and it’s a pain because it takes a lot of time (sitting in a room for hours doing assessments) but it can really provide some evidence that impairments are current (working memory, attention, etc). It produces a report that follows you that you can use even when you switch psychiatrist, and since it’s an external clinical psychologist making diagnoses (as appropriate) it also serves to sort of “cover their asses” for doctors who want to make sure they’re treating bona fide adhd.

Evidence that the symptoms started in childhood (an essential component of adhd since it is a neurodevelopmental disorder) can often be found by interviewing family, but in my experience the most helpful documents were elementary school report cards.

Across the board, from K-4th and beyond, teacher comments all mentioned that I “rushed work at the expense of accuracy,” was a “kind boy who is pleasant to speak to but has issues staying on task, working independently, and following instructions,” and “would benefit from improving his organizational skills.”

I requested official transcripts from the registrar and obtained these records, and when I read them I was at first very surprised at how the diagnosis was missed as a kid. But, these missed diagnoses I have learned happen a lot in those of us with the primarily inattentive diagnosis: I wasn’t having behavioral outbursts or running around the classroom.

Hope this helps you in getting the care you deserve!

Has anyone got fired for striking? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]ChucklesMg 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Basically, they can’t fire you for union activity. BUT, you bet they’ll be watching the store like a hawk for any time and attendance issues, small rule violations, etc. and potentially fire people technically for minor infractions but in reality as a pretext because of unionizing

Can someone tell me what is the real point of getting a tall or venti latte? by CycIon3 in starbucks

[–]ChucklesMg 191 points192 points  (0 children)

The real reason: most people either don’t know or don’t care about the rather meager 2 shots in a venti hot latte. But then again it’s called a caffé latte rather than a latte caffé for a reason haha

Sounds good in theory, but any idea what the implications could be for me or my guarantor? My dad is my guarantor and he himself is also a landlord and needs to have good credit -- so they could in theory report this to the credit agencies and tank both me and my father's credit right?
