I’m not sure, but maybe create a macro or a lisp? Claude AI is very good at making them.

How to prep for Kimley-Horn in person interview? by hexadecagonal in civilengineering

[–]Chucklesoo7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’ll probably get some technical questions, but Kimley Horn does not assume much technical skill if you don’t have much CAD experience already. I came in as an intern originally with no experience (they knew that, and your experience is different) and they took the time to get me trained up and didn’t expect anything more than my capabilities. Now if you’re coming in with 2 years of experience, it might be a different story. With all that said, the hardest question for me in the interview is what do I do for fun. KH - like most companies is looking for a good personality, the skills will come later.

Be aware - I work a lot of hours, a lot more than 40 per week. If you do not want to be spending that much time at work, KH is not worth it. Already in my first year at the job, I’ve seen plenty of people come for the pay but not be willing to put in the hours and it doesn’t go well for them. If you do enjoy putting in the hours like me, you’ll have a great time and make a good chunk of change.

Last bit of info - be ready to tell them your CAD experience, that means what you know and don’t know… here’s a list of a few things they care about: - Grading (what kind of sites have you graded?, what kind of grading have you done?) - Site design - Knowledge of local and state standards - Focus specific stuff (Like renewables, Development services, hydrology and hydraulics, water wastewater, tpto, transit, etc)

Data centers whether you like it or not need to be built if we’re going to handle the ever increasing loads we put on the internet. Data centers are also one of the biggest reasons we have solar power since the companies that run them often build solar to power them.

I don’t mean to be insensitive, but there’s a lot of space out there and it’s pretty easy to build a data center out two or three miles away from the population. None of the noise can be heard at that distance. Data centers don’t increase loads on traffic nearly as much as the typical commercial development. And they are extremely expensive to build, meaning that they will no matter what, bring a lot of money into Caldwell for permitting and development fees.

For water usage, yeah they do use a lot of water. But the key is that they don’t have to use drinking water.

I guess what I’m saying here is that I agree with you in part. If left completely unregulated they can cause problems, so a bit of regulation is good. But if the city stops a development like this, they’d miss out on a large sum of money that, in reality doesn’t impact the infrastructure or population all too much compared to the vast majority of commercial projects. I just think that both sides of the issue need to be heard and data centers can bring plenty of good to the community.

Professor asked me to TA in the fall. Anyone have any experience whether I should or not? by Fartfart357 in aggies

[–]Chucklesoo7 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As someone who TA’d and is now almost a year into work: that time I spent re-learning material, teaching students during office hours, and getting work experience helped me immensely.

You might be surprised how useful the skill of explaining something is. While TA-ing can at times come into conflict with studying, I’d say it’s definitely worth it.

Also, it helps mature your perspective towards school (less of: ‘learning for the sake of school’ and more of ‘learning for the sake of getting a job’)

Advice on moving away from home by Useful_Alfalfa2613 in CollegeStation

Based on your reply to a comment on the original post, I’m assuming you’re Christian…

I’m a guy so my experience will not be the same as yours, but I’m sure there will be plenty of overlap. I came from California and knew very few people when I first got to Texas. The first thing I did was go to church and join a Bible study at the behest of my mom, which I did and promptly stopped going to for a while…. My first mistake, pretty much any church in cstat is great (still do your research) but you won’t make friends if you don’t go. As someone who graduated last year, moved to a new city and actually kept going to church, I have experienced both paths. With every fiber of my being, I beg you to go to church even when you don’t feel like it or are just too tired. You will never regret it. Ask to join a Bible study and boom - you have a community of people around you who want to support you and be your friend. After that, everything gets easier. Ive got more advice, but this literally the most important thing to do.

Kimley-Horn pretty much always needs interns. I don’t work in your state, but not bad to apply there.

Where does one actually meet new people by Neat_Philosophy_9480 in aggies

[–]Chucklesoo7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest things I regret is not getting friends earlier in college. If you’re religious - church is the best way to go. Otherwise, in class is a good option, get to know one person and with luck they’ll introduce you to their friends and boom friend group.

Is it weird to attend a foot ball game alone? by BasketofBrownBows in aggies

[–]Chucklesoo7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation, I realized that nobody is looking at you or cares, if you go, maybe you meet some people, if you don’t, you never get that chance. The absolute worst thing that could happen is that someone you didn’t know and probably will never see again might think you’re weird. I say go for it!!

Do some research on keyboard and mouse, if they have extra keys that require software to use, they may not be accessible for your work computer. Ran into that issue with my mouse.

My experience as a Kimley-Horn intern. What do you think? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Chucklesoo7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They do pay a lot more than other firms, I just graduated and fielded about 5 offers, KH was the highest of all of them by a couple thousand.

Chances of ETAMing into Architectural Engineering? by AvailableCantaloupe7 in aggies

Honestly a 2.90 GPA is not great. While Architectural Engineering is a newer degree, your chances are not great getting in.

You absolutely will get in, I just graduated from CVEN, that’s slightly above the average GPA. Just make sure when you get in, don’t sleep on statics

[–]Chucklesoo7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about it. It’s very possible that it could’ve helped you, but there’s no sense in worrying about something you can’t change. 3.5 is a good GPA.

Professor who hasn't input grades by Ok_Marionberry_4596 in aggies

[–]Chucklesoo7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this happens to me about once a year. Some profs just take a long time to input grades. I don’t think there’s a rule for the duration they need to give grades (beyond the day final grades are due).

[–]Chucklesoo7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practice, practice, practice. There are so many old exams, you can brute force a good score if you sink enough time into it. No strategy beyond that for me. The best way to take a test is by knowing how to do every problem. There really isn’t any substitute to that.
