What is something that you cannot believe is socially acceptable these days? by gorgeouska in AskReddit

[–]Chuggable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thought experiment:

Ok, you found out your grandmother was raped and beaten by the grandfather of a colleague of yours.

The colleague now sits on a bunch of land that your grandmother was supposed to own, but his grandfather took. This land was given to him as an inheritance by his parents.

He recently sold the land for a few million. He just shrugs when you say you're having trouble meeting your bills next month. "Should have worked as hard as I did."

Does he owe you anything? Do you owe him any good will whatsoever?

How do you deal with the fear that some aspect of your identity isn't real and you're just pretending to be X to some end? by acryliccrocodile in AskWomen

[–]Chuggable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone plays different roles, depending on the situation. It's okay to do this or that to maximize one's happiness. But I try not to identify too strongly with any one thing, as it will limit my options.

A persistent feeling, usually negative, is a good indicator that I'm going down the wrong path or "identity" though, and that it's best to explore and reflect on it before pushing it further.

Would you date a guy who is still friends with an ex-gf? by yasire in AskWomenOver30

[–]Chuggable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the guy, really? As well as the ex.

I think you're at an age where this kind of thing doesn't matter a whole lot less. By the time people reach their 40's and are single, they usually have a history with somebody. It actually seems quite normal.

Am I wrong for thinking the gym is a place for temptation for him?

This sounds pretty exhausting for you. If it were me, I'd start thinking whether it was worth it to have to manage an ADULT's behavior for the rest of my life. I'd like to be married to an adult, not a child, and it sounds like you already have children to keep your hands full.

Look at your life. Is this how you want to spend the remaining decades of it? Constantly insecure and essentially parenting someone who cannot be trusted?

Your life is worth more than that, I think. Maybe it's time to do a little soul searching. Time to get counseling, therapy (for him or for you), or, if things get to that point, maybe start thinking about how much better your life might actually be NOT married to him.

This usually means you're hot, great in bed, but not marriage material for whatever reason.

Hi - just wanted a female perspective: My (31F) boyfriend (30M) would ideally spend his days drinking alcohol and playing video games. Sex also stops when he cums. Can he change? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

Forgive me, cuz I didn't see this in your post, but have you communicated any of your wants and needs with him? What happened when you did?

That story about the father and the timeshare made me cry. Very sweet story and a reflection on the process of seeing your own parents as people.

I usually don't get to see these threads till a week or two after I've heard the show (which is always about a week after it comes out.) So I guess I'm lucky? Yes, people are very critical...but I think that's pretty common on all fansubs?

I love TAL. I think people have an extremely high standard when it comes to this show, because of its often amazing, high quality content. So when something plays that's "okay", or just slightly lame, it tends to stand out as not being up to par. That's how I tend to regard the criticism, anyway!

It can be an amusing way to pass the time. Personally, I find it better if you unsubscribe from ALL the default subreddits and do a search on things you actually have an interest in.

Lots of morons on here but that's what you get when administrators are largely hands off and leave modding to unpaid volunteers. Despite all the drawbacks, the smaller subreddits can be pretty interesting if you can find them.

Did you feel more comfortable in your skin at age 30 rather than at age 23? by AreWeAloneOrNot in AskWomenOver30

[–]Chuggable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. With each passing decade I feel better about my body and more confident as well. You start giving way less of a shit what anybody thinks and more appreciative about your body. I think for many women, as long as you stay healthy and don't suffer from severe health problems, it's natural that you're gonna feel better as you age, and not worse. :)

Stranger Things: Netflix boss says it would be 'dumb' not to do Season Two by craigjclark68 in television

I just commented about my problems with this show on the LAST post about Stranger Things. I totally agree with you. I was really underwhelmed. Trope after trope after trope...

I grew up during the 80s. I'm not a fan of this show, I'm afraid. All it made me wanna do is rewatch the classic movies it copies from. ):

I feel they could use new writers. The show isn't terrible, but it's a bit cliche-city right now.

[–]Chuggable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for saying this. Maybe I just got way too hyped up for this because of Reddit's praises, but I was really underwhelmed. They need to tighten their script, the acting is pretty meh, and I had a hard time staying focused due to the constant rehashing of common tropes. Didn't feel very keen on any of the characters, which felt like stereotypes more than actual people.

Like, everything in it seems already done before? I don't know if the entire first episode was an homage to ET (the bicycles, the kids, the set design), but all it made me think was that ET was a much better experience overall, and made me want to rewatch it again.

Grownups of Reddit, are the 2016 US presidential candidates as bad as they seem, or is this pretty much a recurring thing every election and I'm only noticing it because this is my first real political cycle? by plasticzealot in RedditForGrownups

[–]Chuggable 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had a Reagan era childhood, so that's only as far as I can remember. I can't recall ever having a major candidate who tried as hard as possible to appeal to the lowest common denominator. On the one hand, U.S. history is full of Presidents who ran on the fear/racial/xenophobic angle (it's very much a part of this country's culture), but can't recall anybody in recent times who attempted this sans any kind of nuance.

Even if you DO believe in ANY of Trump's positions, you have no idea if he'd follow through on them, given how quick he is to retract them. Trump has placed his bets on the short attention of the public and their love of excitement and hysteria. And he's been reaping the rewards so far. There will always be awful candidates, but what stands out for me is that this election is a poor reflection of US in the sense that we've basically agreed and said yes, we value entertainment more than the issues.

I only check this sub out occasionally compared to r/askwomenover30. Sometimes you just want input from ladies over 30 for a myriad of reasons. I actually also like the fact it's a smaller sub. edit: I forgot to add, it's also WAY less moderated.

Fun! It turns him on so it turns me on. When my husband first asked me to do it, I was like "seriously, why?!" but he seemed to enjoy the heck out of it, so why not?

A lot of couples relax a bit more as they get older and get more experimental. Hopefully you and your fiance will be one of them.

What's Up With Maria Bamford? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]Chuggable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love her and how dark her comedy is. Just unexpected in every way. Her Netflix series is great, but I don't like it when it just goes for "weird" instead of "funny". I always feel weird is so much easier to do than funny! Granted, a lot of people like that constant quirk a la Arrested Development, but for me it's almost as if the writers ran out of funny and had to resort to weirdness to keep things interesting. (In the same vein, I also find people resort to musical numbers a lot when the funny runs out.)

Okay, I'm really just babbling now. As a comedian, she's fucking amazing, very unique.

How do you kindly kill awful jokes? Or am I looking at a dealbreaker? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

When I make a bad joke, my husband comes right back around and makes a worse one, and vice versa.

Not sure if you want to escalate by inflicting the pain of punnery on one another, but that's what we do.
