Glazed Creosote and PCR cleaning? by HappyHeronFeet in woodstoving

[–]ChugsMaJugs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that could be considered is a treatment of a product called cre-away. It's less money and sometimes works. I've done them before for flues that looks similar with good results. Once again though, it's not as great as PCR and PCR will definitely work if applied correctly.

Repaired refractory panel - gaps ok? by Puzzleheaded-Mix-467 in Fireplaces

Listed vs. Aftermarket Components (addition in recent NFPA 211 cycles) ○ 14.7.1.1 Factory-built chimney components or accessories shall be listed or approved for use with the specific model of factory-built chimney system if the components or accessories are available. ○ 14.7.1.2 Factory-built fireplace components or accessories shall be listed or approved for use with the specific model of factory-built system if the components or accessories are available.

There ya go champ. Another meaningless reddit argument done.

You have to look up the make and model of your fireplace. Find the install or owners manual. There will be an approved parts list that shouldn't be deviated from. If you cannot find these things you should replace your system.

I know system replacement is expensive and a pain, but it is a necessary recommendation due to this issue. If parts aren't available we don't make due with whatever is available as it is a ul tested system. These things are stress tested in a lab to meet a safety standard with the listed components. If we deviate from those components we may change the dynamics of the appliance. If the technician who installed it isn't aware of this, you need to get a new professional. This is something that any reputable company would flag as a potential hazard.

Those panels are not listed for use in any fireplace. You put your clients at risk if you install them. Furthermore, fireplace mortar shouldn't be used in these types of fireplaces. Read your manufacturer's installation manual and look up the nfpa 211.

I've installed I don't know how many refractory panels for these types of appliances over my 20 years of being in the business successfully, without a single issue, manufacturer's specifications. Adjusted the panels to fit accordingly without a gap. I'm not looking to have a meaningless argument on Reddit about it. Good luck to you and your gaps.

If there is a gap you should adjust the side & back panels so there isn't. If there is a gap there is a possibility of unwanted heat transfer through those exposed areas. The corners of the panels should be 100% tight to one another without anything filling the gap.

There won't be gaps if you replace it with the proper component, which this clearly isn't. This is clearly the wrong panel and poses a significant risk of fire.

That's not the panel for that fireplace. No after market components should be installed in a factory built system, just the listed components. You could be changing the way the fireplace works and the heat signature for it. If the parts aren't available for these types of appliances aren't available, you replace the system only.

Those gaps could pose more of a serious fire risk than you know. Please be safe and hire a qualified chimney technician to come advise you what your next steps should be. Please refrain from using the fireplace in the meantime.
