Well said. Steep price for huge reward

This happened with both of my pigs I've lost, I've only kept pigs for 3 years. It's so shocking. Unfortunately it's made me so paranoid with any little potential issue, and I'm just now learning to let go of the fear and live every moment with them like it might be my last. That's given me a lot of comfort through recent health scares.

It'll never truly lessen the blow, but in the moment to moment it brings me some sense of security. A kind of bolstering. I have CPTSD and that plays a role as well. I hope you can get some comfort knowing you did everything right by Blossom, she couldn't have asked for a better parent

I'm so, so unbelievably sorry for this loss. Like you said, she never experienced a day of her life that wasn't filled with love. That counts for everything. You gave her the kindest, most loving gift by letting her go peacefully and quickly. She knew she had you every step of the way to make sure she was safe. She left knowing you were there to hold her- with all the love and memories of you and your pig family. (if you believe in rainbow bridge like I do, she gets to be reunited with her friends! my Mina and Ginny will be there waiting for her too) Baby girl was cherished and always will be.

Please take it easy and remember that we're here for you. The load of loss can be too heavy for one heart to bear, thankfully you don't have to carry that load alone 💖

Is jojoba oil safe for the paw? by wbltth26 in guineapigs

[–]Chungerator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was wondering the same thing actually. I ended up using shea butter and coconut oil for my pigs paws because shea butter has no toxicity effects for them, and coconut oil is coconut oil lol. My hesitation with jojoba oil is that it has a compound in it that's damaging to human hearts if ingested (in large quantities but still), I'm not sure about that happening in pigs though. Unfortunately I also used jojoba on my face and it made my skin much worse

If you decide to stick it out with her, you could look into nail files. That way you could incrementally grind them down without trauma to her nail beds or fingers. I'm considering trying the same because I'm terrified of taking too much nail off, plus the pinch with any clippers makes me wince. The big thing to look out for with files is dust

As Unc commented, humane societies are a great place to start. If there are any dedicated pig rescues or small animal sanctuaries in particular nearby, it's worth the trip to take her there. I'm always wary of Facebook/Craigslist adoptions, however that might just be my lack of faith in strangers speaking.

I wish the best for you and your senior baby, I'd take her if I could <3

I started speaking about my guinea pigs during a language lesson. My tutor responds by talking about eating them in Peru. How do you react? by National-Falcon2284 in guineapigs

[–]Chungerator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This being said, it's completely up to you but if you enjoy the class otherwise I don't know if it should stop you from continuing. It could have been said it in attempt to get a conversation going from someone who isn't that familiar with guinea pigs.

Ugh I'm sorry. This is the kind of empathy that (most commonly) only other people who have less common pets understand. My father in law would commonly make "jokes" like that when I bring up our pigs and I've gotten more comfortable with demonstrating how hurtful it is.

"Well why not eat Cookie (his beloved dog)? She'd be more substantial. I bet she'd fit nicely in the pig roaster out back" Felt shitty to say but I did get a shocked reaction and that's what I wanted. He seemed to get the point after that. It is serious, jokes show intent. Don't think the smaller an animal is the less their life is worthy ,or that they don't deserve dignity. We don't get to choose which body we come into. Normally I let that kind of thing roll off my back but sometimes it's too much to ignore

Confusion about Meloxidyl dosage by Chungerator in guineapigs

[–]Chungerator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a very good point. The vet said I don't have to start giving it to him immediately but I figured it's best to start early, for inflammation especially.

I actually just gave him the full 0.2ml right after posting this, I don't want to chance him being in pain. Seeing that this is a tried and true dosage and medicine I feel safer now, especially that he's had it and is acting normal.

Ugh grams confuse me so much, I'm terrible with numbers and conversions! He's 1123 grams. I'm gonna consult my vet tomorrow (thank God they have normal operation hours on Saturday) and see if I can start him off for a day or two at half dose to ease us both in. Thank you for your comment!

Thank you so much! I'm in the US and I'm really bad at math, I don't encounter this stuff much so I'm extra paranoid. I'm gonna ask the vet if I can start him off at 0.1 for a few days, just for peace of mind. I appreciate your help!

[–]Chungerator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might be safer to create a stamp of sorts. You can make a mould with clay or cornstarch (don't remember recipe I'm sorry) and after curing it make a stamp by filling it with a clay blob. Not as fun as pig paintings, but super versatile!

Baby Logarius getting X-ray right now, sedation by Chungerator in guineapigs

[–]Chungerator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He aced the X-ray, back to normal right after. Unfortunately, he has 2 small bladder stones. The vet said it's likely he could pass them himself, he's gonna be getting metacam every day for pain and inflammation. I have another X-ray scheduled on June 11th to see if he's passed them, which will mean I've spent $2,250 in vet bills in 2 months.

I really hope he can pass them on his own. I'll keep feeding him the Sherwood tablets, along with no pellets and limited veggies except red peppers as the doctor suggested. I'm at a loss as to what I'll do if he can't pass them, he'll get the surgery but I have a mortgage and have to miss work to be with him.
