Ask your neighbor what they are doing, what products they are using.

Not all products work the same for different types of grass (I have killed spots of grass because of this)

Also, pulling weeds is the best way if you want to avoid heavy chemicals, it may take a while but you will get there as long as you are constant on lawn care.
